In is a delightful and surprising entry in this year’s Harold Game Jam, cleverly disguising itself as a low-effort, low-quality game only to transform into a wildly entertaining and trippy experience. Initially, the default title screen and RPG Maker MV title music might lead you to believe you’re in for a typical and uninspired journey. However, this game quickly subverts expectations, plunging you into a bizarre and fascinating world where nothing behaves as it should.

The game’s strength lies in its ability to create a sense of disorientation and whimsy, akin to wandering through a fun house. The abundance of cut scenes and strange visual effects contribute to this surreal atmosphere, making each moment unpredictable and engaging. The standard RTP graphics, usually a mark of a generic RPG Maker game, are used effectively here to heighten the sense of oddity and unpredictability.

Humor is a standout feature in In. Rather than relying on witty dialogue, the game’s comedy comes from the sheer craziness of the events unfolding around you. It’s a refreshing approach that keeps players on their toes, constantly wondering what will happen next.

Despite its unconventional presentation, In is a well-crafted game. The deliberate use of default assets to create an expectation of mediocrity, only to turn it on its head, is a clever and effective design choice. The result is a fun and memorable experience that stands out in this year’s Harold Game Jam.

Overall, In is a fun and quirky game that’s definitely worth checking out. It’s a brief but highly entertaining journey into a world of delightful chaos and humor, showcasing the creativity and ingenuity of its developer. This game is a perfect example of how appearances can be deceiving and why it’s worth giving every game a chance.

This game was technically impressive and the story and dialogue was hilarious. Good job!

It's always a treat to see your entries, Lorie. The skill paired with humor is amazing. Thanks for entering in the jam!

You never cease to amuse. This was your best yet.

Overall: One of the biggest mindscrews I've seen in a Harold Jam with some absolutely insane eventing. I didn't know half of this was possible!

Gameplay: Normal walking simulator gameplay, but what happens when you interact with each object is what makes this game what it is.

Music: Very much warranted RTP.

Story: A classic Lorie romp.

Graphics: Equally warranted RTP.

Comedy:  This may be where my 5 ends up going. So much beautiful chaos.

Holy shit, the "Now Loading" jape got me IMMEDIATELY and the transition to the dark lord's volcano lair was genius. It carries on in this vain throughout. The gimmick does begin to wear thin after a while, and some jokes land harder than others, but in general this is a marvellous piece of work presentationally, very well done.

Also, the combination of animations + event work? Genius, and well-timed.

I will say, the bits where I had to play the game - if you can call it that given the lack of actual explicit gameplay - fell short of the cutscenes. Like, the trial-and-error nature of the waterslide puzzle felt quite cheap,, but the presentation once you finished it was clever and fun. Some of the puzzles are better, but the mapping combined with the constant "haha gotcha"s started grating a bit after a while.

I feel like the game coulda been 1/3 as long and I'd have had just as good of a time, if not better.

I think I see how it all worked, and I'm keen to try something similar myself, but in general the actual "game" part of the game didn't work as well as the terrific cutscenes. "Take the stairs" REALLY got me. I wish it'd been more of that and less "chasing the game's maps around" haha.

Just generally a great experience. Feels like a flash cartoon from 20 years ago with how pacy it is and with the style of humour. Didn't always land, but when it did it LANDED. Really solid work.

This was a bizarre absurdist romp and it really delivered for me!

It was almost Yume Nikki-esque in the way it constantly played with my expectations. I never knew what was going to happen when I clicked on something!

Also the eventing was weirdly genius? Like, I somehow feel like I learned a ton of clever tricks for improving cutscenes just from playing this.

This was very well executed for a Harold In game, and probably my personal fav in the series so far!

the island exploded

Wow! I did not expect that! This game was a blast!

How did you make every transition so seamless? That must have take a lot of work.
