Description
The melody follows a group of travelers entering long forgotten buried in sand and wilderness town. The only sound they hear is echo of the past life combining with their steps.

---

Stochas was used to create a pattern for a set of hats, on top of them arturia efx fragments was used. Just the first Ocean Sweep preset.

Bass sound is a simple modular setup with 2 filters for left and right out each modulated by the same lfo for cutoff (cv for the one of them is inverted) and the second lfo controls resonance.

The source of unpleasant sounds - minifreak with two op fm as first osc and virtual analog as a kind of sub osc. And long attack. In the project Valhalla Supermassive reverb was added to make it a bit more spacey. But not much.

Drums consist of two kick samples, one made from tr8 kick + snare + heavy eq, second from moog mavis a long time ago. On top of them a valhalla supermassive with minimal mix except for the first key plays.

Frozen Marimba from Arturia Augmented Mallets on the keys, some strings from arturia analog v for violin-ish sounds and uviworkstation on piano.

For piano 8bit crusher with random changing of clock is applied.

---

ChowTapeModel on the master + gate and peak limiter.

Cover Art by Charles-Louis Clérisseau "Landscape with a path, garden wall and column, n.d."

loveeeee how mysterious this sounds!

The bass is so ominous—it definitely keeps me on guard. In a game setting, I’d be bracing for a jumpscare (thankfully, there isn’t one here!). After 4:00, I really like the small tone shift—it feels less anxious and more exploratory.

Developer

Thank you! It is funny that I don't perceive the bass as anything ominous on the contrast as something warm and friendly :)

Though I get it that before 4:00 the lack of higher half of the bass track made a suspense.

Really cool atmosphere, really great mix.

I think the randomizer subtracted more than it adds for the timing on the first bit. Violating a expectation of time is a stylistic choice, but I think for ambience, the effect is that it pulls the listener out of the space of being in the context of using it as ambience. It grabs the attention in a way that pulls the listener out of a sort of flow, which in some styles of music is actually exactly the purpose.

Overall though this is really cool.

Developer

Thank you!

For the hi hats original idea was about the polyrythms but they stood out too much. But when I added fragments it added some amount of randomness. I see your point though, a better way would be bounce at least three version of the final track and use the best variants depending on the situation. This kind of work is something inevitably waiting for me in the future :)

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MAN AVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

Oh, that's right, what about the track....

The overall sound is quite mysterious, a bit detective-like even.... Good pads, good melodies and BASS.

Overall - I liked it :>

P.S. I don't know why, but 5:05 is my favorite moment... How did you do it?

Developer(+1)

Thanks you! UwU

Around 5:05 is a hi hats pattern, + bounced and reversed + around 8 copies each moved a bit in a time + panning + either efx fragment or havy reverb, all group bounced once again and hard cut right before the thummm sound.

Oh... thank's!

Good synth. At first I couldn't hear anything, it was very low.

Developer

Thanks! You are right I made a mistake with the beginning level. Should have checked it on different headphones and monitors.

for a certain part of the track the bass line and the pads seem to follow 2 different tones creating a strange dissonance.

Developer

Thanks, I will pretend that's intentional :D

Well, one of the pad sounds is detuned and supposed to be a bit unpleasant, but not entirely in dissonance. Can you point to the position so I can think about what went wrong?

unfortunately I am partially deaf, this creates many difficulties for me in my musical production. In any case, from around minute 1:40, while the bass follows the key of Eb min the pad seems a semitone lower, Dmin.

That synth and bass really fantastic.

Thanks!

The wet inharmonic synths in the background are so cool.  Love this mix, what a stellar blend of instruments.  The harmonies you're choosing create a perfect sense of mystery.  This is so suspenseful that I'm almost expecting a jumpscare to make me fly out of my seat.  The peaceful harmonic payoff we get at the end feels so good.   Really fantastic submission, you definitely nailed ambient!

Thanks you!
