That's right, it's a shame that ducks can't use glue and a hammer at the crafting table!

Duck on an Island
Hello Hobbes! I’m DataPotato and this is my review of your game. Your game is great and any criticism in this review isn’t meant to be personal or rude or to even to say that your game is awful, this is just one perspective on your glorious game and I just want to give some advice where I can. Always remember Hanlon’s Razor, "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity,” and yes this introduction is copy-pasted, now let’s get into it by relevant categories!
TL;DR: ooh
Presentation:
Duck on an Island. Quaint. Simple. Lovable. I want to duck on an island! So let’s do it. Let’s do it. Alright.
WOW that blue is the same! Awesome!!!
Heeyyyyy I love a good comic strip start!
I feel like a duck on an island. Let’s get into this.
Story/Fantasy/Premise
Duck. Stranded. Isolated on this island… No communicator??? Hmm someone’s been playing a bit too much animal crossing…. Anyway, collecting pickles… Vibing… I kind of want to stay… But i collect all four communicator pieces, and all four pickles… go to the table with my glue and hammer, wiggle my adorable duck hands, but nothing happens. After 4 full game attempts, it looks like I really am isolated…. Forever…. Listening to this duck on an island tune….
Wondering….
Sound/Art
You know you’re getting five stars right? You are. You are getting five stars. Did you really record these on real instruments?? And these sound effects? This is all just so great…
The art is geoaoeurgous. Everything fits. Everything combines to create the perfect setting. A duck on an island.
Gameplay/Mechanics
Arguably the most contraversial aspect of this game. It’s a point and click adventure. Arguably one of the least engaging genres. But if you can pull off just the right amount of thought required, interesting interactions, and have a good fantasy, then it can work just fine! And that’s what you’ve done here. This is the perfect point and click adventure. But could it have better as a different genre…. Well I think one of the advantages of point and click is the focus on the environment, so I would say that better is an oversimplification. I say that the mechanics contribute to the theme, but I do like being able to move left and right and explore, maybe swim in the water, jump on the hut, I dunno…
But then that table. This is the reason your game is a ducksterpiece. You go into a hut. Interact with a table. And probably glue your communicator back together. I think this game is a pleasant but small experience as is, but could improve from having more stuff. But that is a very good place to be. Much better than having a game that has loads of weird stuff but doesn’t work at all, like my games typically.
Oh yeah and I’m addicted to collecting stuff and having inventories, so yeah that’s awesome.
Funness
What constitutes as fun? I’d say enjoyment. And I thoroughly enjoyed this game. Could it have been more engaging, more replayable, more challenging? Yes, but it didn’t need to be. But more features would have made it more fun and engaging for a lot of people.
Polish
MWAH! Those little things. Those little things are great! I love the mute button. I love the tophat guy easter egg. Water animation. Water transparency. And even space bar mutes! Wait hold on… That’s an event system thing… Lol you can beat the game just by spamming tab and space… Whatever! That’s not the point! This game is amazing is the point!!!
Hey what if we could move behind the tree? I find hiding behind things to be especially fun.
The only thing that looks not polished is the pixelated text and the pixelated movement, but it looks like you may have had some of the same problems I did with pixelated stuff and anti-aliasing and all that garbage ARAHH.
PICKLE SIDE QUEST???? Sweet ;) and the fact that it says aquired…
I was about to say that there was something weird going on with the fishing…. But that’s me isn’t it…Oh man…. Lol…. You’re a real one, hobbes….
Final Words
This truly is a ducksterpiece….
I betcha wanna know what I’m rating….
well I’m not gonna tell you, but I think your best spots were sound and creativity and your slightly less best spots were funness and mechanics, which don’t get me wrong, your game is still the best and deserves first place in every category ;)
Found the pickles but couldn't figure out what to do with the glue and hammer lol
yeah the game was actually not beatable due to a bug. here's the post jam version if you still want to finish it (https://officialhobbes.itch.io/duck-on-an-island-post-jam)
thanks for the nice comment! the game was broken in the submitted version, here's the post-jam: https://officialhobbes.itch.io/duck-on-an-island-post-jam
