Themes
We were set on the fishing theme early on, way before the optional themes were available! However, the optional themes inspired a lot of the story, giving us constraints and directions that we hadn't considered before. It was quite fun adapting the game to the themes!
Tools
Game Engine: Pico8. The constraints help keeping the scope low, yet are loose enough to make the game interesting! Art: Aseprite. The familiarity of the tool allowed for quick production and iteration!
Lessons
Improved our prioritization skills with this, getting the important stuff out of the way first and leaving the details for later! That + collaboration experience!

Hello Pico 8 lovers, I like you a lot in interpreting the side quest theme it's perfect... the game is charming the colors are shimmering and give a real extra something to the game... I agree with Achie's comment the game should be a little more rewarding quickly and maybe we can touch a few fish before losing... otherwise it's a good fun concept
Thank you so much! Adding a "lives" upgrade is definitely in the works, as well as a bunch of balancing! Look forward to that!
Cute, no notes!
Well, no, okay, one note—if the upgrades past rock and rope are implemented, it'd be nice to be able to read the descriptions even before you have that many coins so that you know what you're working toward. If they haven't been implemented, disregard that!
Hah, that's definitely a good addition! We do have item descriptions for available items in the shop, but there's no prompt for it yet! And yes, those items are locked, but we're working on adding them + their descriptions for the full release!
Thank you so much for playing!!
cute game
Thank you!!
Great job on the game! The art is absolutely charming, and the gameplay loop is engaging, though I found it a bit grindy at the start. The PICO-8 style and theme integration are fantastic, and the game has a lot of potential for further development. Well done!
Thank you!! The grind is definitely one of the main priorities when further developing it!
Fun little game, a little addictive just dipping back in for a little more.
I'm glad it's fun! Thank you so much!
Glad to read you'll be developing this further because it's a solid gameplay loop and has a really endearing style! Both the in-game and game page art are fantastic. Really can't wait to come back and check on this game again later in the future. Nice work and great collaboration!
Thank you so much for the support!! It's been a blast to work and collaborate on, so we're definitely looking forward to expanding it to its full extent!
SUCH A CUTE GAME YOU'RE MY HERO
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH
charming game, progression felt slow though, could use some tweaks
Thank you! Yeah progression and balancing is something we're taking as a priority for the post-jam full release!
Very cute game! Spend more time than I expected. As mentioned by other people, I do feel like it needed more stuff integrated into the game loop to make it a better game (more fish, more upgrades valiable, less grindy), but I do get that the jam time usually limits us. Excited to see a full (or fuller) version at some point :)
Thank you so much!! We agree, there's definitely content lacking, but don't you worry as we're already working on the full version of the demo! More content, less grind, more fun :D
Gorgeous splash and and overall a really nice look to the game! Theme is well integrated and gameloop feels nice. My only “issue” with it is how grindy the beginning is, I think it could have been toned down, if only for the jam’s time.
Other then that, well done! Good to see another PICO-8 entry!
Thank you very much! Yeah the grindy nature of it stems from a lack of balancing and variety in options the player has. But we'll be developing this further, and we'll keep that feedback in mind!
I think this is the most gorgeous pico-8 title screen I've ever seen! I really like the gameplay, the art is beautiful and the game concept was quite on point. I have to say it did feel a bit grindy at the beginning in order to get all the stone / rope, Overall, a beautiful execution though, and a big bonus point for using PICO-8 and doing everything from scratch (did you ever try picotron??)
Great job!
Thanks a ton!! Yeah unfortunately we didn't have enough time to balance out the grindiness, but we're hoping to create a better experience after the jam, once we further develop the game!
Haven't tried picotron just yet, but it does feel like something worth exploring! If anything I hope they release it as a fully fledges OS, I would love to load it onto my old laptop and have that as a picotron machine :D
I LOVE the thumbnail art!! The overall art is very cute as well! It becomes a little tough to keep playing in order to get more than 100 Bubble-Currency. Besides that, I like the idea of the mechanics as well; dodging fish in order to get deeper in order to gain more BC.
But . . . where are the other fish? I only know of two: Yellow Dori and Fish Frog...
Thanks a bunch!! The remaining fishies are beyond the demo zone, look forward to future releases of the game :D
I like how you incorporated the side-quest theme! I think it's a super cute game with lots of replay-ability!
Thank you very much!!
