Honestly, the game is so simple yet so fun that I'm surprised this idea hadn't popped up ever in a 8-bit arcade game when they were still on their peak era. Really fun game!
However, it seems like there's a possibility to play with a second player that I couldn't find. On the pause menu there are the controls but I couldn't find anything that explained how to summon Player 2. Anyway, I'm pretty sure you either have a coop or versus mode for that 2nd player and that would make the game much more replayable.
Great game overall! The frying fish is more original than fishing fish, but still. Anyway it's a cool game based on a concept more original than the average UFO-fishing game.
Nice work!
The pause menu is from the PICO-8 interface, it lists the available buttons but the game does not include multiplayer! Thank you for your feedback!
I'm glad you liked the feedback.
If local multiplayer isn't a thing, as you say, then I also think it would be a great idea to include those gamemodes, maybe after the jam ends. I have a few ideas about how them would work:
- Coop: Same game, but the players cooperate to get as much score as possible before losing their lives (2 lifes for each player instead of 4).
- Versus: Similar to coop, but the game ends when one of the players dies. Maybe to make it more competitive, the players could be able to push each other by crashing their UFOs against the other players. I would play that mode.
You may have other ideas better than mine, but for now that's all I wanted to tell you.
Great work man!
Game's quite nice. The graphics are top-notch, loved the effects. I also liked the concept of frying the fish and having to avoid turtles and rockets.
The beam sound was very grating to my ears, though. I also didn't notice turtles lowered score for a while. The game also gets fairly repetitive after a while, too.
Overall, it's a pretty good game. Might needs some minor polish, though.
Really liked the decission to fry fish instead of abducting them, the graphics are simple (so good for pico-8) but the particles... man, that's huge.
the Random pitch on SFx when frying fish is neat. perhaps the turle mechanic is a bit har to understand on a fast glance but not big deal, just great entry!
Playing this with my nephew and he like it. I really dig the esthetics, it really felt like a real retro game.
The effects, especially the ones for the beam and taking damage, are really good and contribute to good visuals overall. Sound effects work but some background or ambient would have been nice, sometimes it feels silent. Using the beam feels pretty satisfying and make the game fun, your beam effects look great.
loved the art style
I think this should be the #1 overall. I only few games so far, but this is solid all around. 2 things I would do, leaderboard and one-life only. Best game so far.
Thank you! One life only hard mode doesn't sound like a bad idea!
So polished! great work, the particles and sounds all make a very satisfying package. Did take me a bit to realize turtles subtract points but the sounds helped me learn fast. It didnt feel like it was getting much harder over time and so I was able to go for a good bit, escalating threat would have been nice so that it doesnt get stale, endless games do well with a sense of inevitability since that way a player knows "Ok I have to get alot of points before it gets too hard" rather than "guess my score will go up until I am bored", not the easiest thing to fit in a jam tho haha. But the juice kept me playing for a good bit anyways, great work all around!
Thank you very much. You make a good point about the difficulty, maybe in the future!
I knew that we were going to have similar ideas, but hey, this is SOOO CUTEEEE
Glad you enjoyed!
Interesting mechanics, really fun game.
Thank you very much!
This one's simple, straightforward, and a lot of fun!
The dilemma of having to be aware of the UFO's current position due to the recoil of the laser, while at the same time having to pay attention to the turtle in the water, is very well done. The expressions are easy to understand and fun. It is beautifully designed.
That was precisely the idea! I'm glad you enjoyed it
