The world feels so alive! Love the aesthetic and the metroid-like gameplay!

This was one of my favorite Byte Off entries. From the moment I hit start it just felt very animated all around. This had great controls and character animations that really made feel like you were under the sea exploring a vast world.

Developer

Thank you! I am so behind on playing other games. I tried out a few early last week, but after Byte Off I've just been focused on family and work. I will hopefully try more later this week!

Very cool game! Graphics look fantastic. The movement, melee attack and projectiles feel very polished. The enemies are unique and fun to destroy. I really like your use of hide behind tiles too. It really gives the game a sense of depth.  Great job!

Developer

Thank you! It was fun to make, but I've taken a week long break from NESmakers and NES, ha. Time to play some more demos!

Very cool! Nice use of color cycling and 8 directional movement. Now, if I could just beat that boss.

Developer

Thanks, and thanks for figuring out 4.5.6 priority bit. That was huge. I need to get back into it and play more demos!

Nice. I see the attacks ended up nicely. You definitely need my dashing in your game. its a nice treatment to move around like Ecco the Dolphin. I must know how you did the walk behind... is that a tile or sprite?

Developer

The walk behind is a tile. There was a modified code posted in 4.5.6 that I think AllDarnDavvy figured out in August. I do need a dash, I hadn't even thought of it. I also want to refine movement, some of the enemies are very fast, which is why I slowed down "Fiona" I did notice a few misplaced background sprites, also I played last night on Fcuex and it crashed late in the game. I would definitely recommend MESEN as I used it exclusively in testing.

Developer

Also, thank you for the feedback!

Ah okay, yeah I always use Mesen, but know that the game will crash or do weird things from time to time. but that's not our doing lol and cool i need this walk behind tile. this would make my environments even better!

Great job with this one!  I will admit that I saw a couple screens in there that reminded me of the underwater stage of TMNT for the NES and it brought back anxiety from that game, but it's all good haha.  Once again, great job and I'm looking forward to the complete game!

Developer

Funny thing, my four year old wanted to make a game about a mermaid. I started, shared some screens on the forum and someone mentioned the Little Mermaid NES game. I have played many NES games, grew up with it, but not that one! So I bought it off eBay and fired it up a week ago and luckily, the mechanics are different. Ha, I had a bit of anxiety. Honestly all underwater levels, TMNT included, are anxiety inducing!

This game is super fun like the Little Mermaid. I like the feeling of depth and how you pass behind some objects. It was fun to explore around underwater, Ecco the Dolphin style. You're good at using curves and uneven edges to reduce the blockiness of NES graphics. I like your colours. This is a fun and enjoyable game demo.

Developer

Thank you! The last two levels were the most fun to make, and only a sneak peak at some ideas we have.
