I finally got back to my hideout with one pumpkin! It's difficult, but fun with a "one more try" feel to it. Also, getting jumped on was an amusing touch.
I found that my powerups would use themselves in quick succession. That is, if I had more than one of a power up, the first one would work and then the next ones would spend themselves a moment later.
Yeah, there is currently a bug scuttling around, where if you click the gourd buttons, then every time you harvest, it will use a gourd if you still have any (harvest is space). This bug will be fixed after the voting stage (the fix is quite simple), but for now the hotkeys (Pumpkin Pie: 1 or P, Banana Squash: 2 or B, Cucumber Cracker: 3 or C, Red Pepper: 4 or R) work without any issues.
Thanks for playing! I hope that pumpkin was delicious!
Hiya!
Top down 3D game wow! I played with a keyboard too and I had the spacebar bug as well. Powerups are a nice addition that adds more to the gameplay. I'll try agin with a controller tho I think the gamefeel will be better.
Thanks for the review!
A work-around for the space bar bug is to use the hotkeys (Pumpkin Pie: 1 or P, Banana Squash: 2 or B, Cucumber Cracker: 3 or C, Red Pepper: 4 or R) instead of clicking on the buttons.
Fun game. Since space is both pick-up-gourds and throw-gourds, I ended up throwing the gourds I just picked up while trying to pick up more.
Credits are slightly non-compliant.
Thanks for playing.
I was able to reproduce the bug. I think it has to do with UI focusing when the buttons are clicked. After I used a gourd by clicking on the icon, the focus would change to different buttons whenever I moved the arrow keys, and I would begin throwing gourds with the space key. I put the buttons in and never really tested them because I was using the hotkeys (1, 2, 3, 4 according to the order of icons; or p, b, c, r according to the first letter of each gourd; r is for red pepper because p was for pumpkin pie). I think I fixed the bug on my local development version by removing focus after a button is pressed. Is it okay if I update my submission with this bug fix while the voting stage is still going?
But, despite the bug, did you manage to put the gourds to good use ;) ?
How should I change the credits?
eh, that bug is not terribly significant, so I wouldn't worry about fixing it before the judging is done. It is usually not allowed since fixing bugs after the deadline weakens the point of the deadline, but WithTheLove sometimes makes exceptions on a case by case basis. You should ask him.
I did indeed manage to utilize the gourds :) Thanks.
Per the Jam rule #3, Credits must include:
The Author's name or OpenGameArt.org handle(done)A URL pointing to the asset on OpenGameArt.org(done)You have two of them, and honestly they are the 2 most important ones IMO, so it may not be a deal-breaker, but to be safe it would be a good idea to also include the name of the work and the license as well.
OK, I can wait till after voting to fix the bug.
I will go update the credits.

I like your Thanksgiving oriented take on the gourd theme. Halloween was the obvious one and my first idea, but considering the deadline was the end of October, Thanksgiving is more timely for the November voting period.
I did see one error in that about half the time I jumped on the hatch and clicked Dive, there was an (error code?) at the top of the screen. Did not effect the game too much, since it normally worked after clicking a second time.
Thanks for the review! I first thought about making a Halloween game where you are a little kid trying to make your way through a corn maze without getting caught by the evil Jack'o Lantern. But, I shifted to a Thanksgiving theme a few days in. I wanted to emulate the hand-in-the-cookie-jar feeling of trying to get as much stuff as you can without getting caught.
Was this the error you encountered when trying to exit the game?
That's the dive button. Sorry, I didn't spend that much time on the controls. The hotkey for diving is currently backspace (to be changed after the jam). It's strange that you would be able to jump in with the two taps of the space key. I didn't intend to implement it that way, but maybe it slipped past me.
Right now I'm working on making each farm hand have unique behavior (like the ghosts in Pacman, which was an inspiration for this game). Stay tuned for Turkey Runner Remastered!
No. I could tell the dive button was supposed to be there (and forgot I had to click it instead of pressing space, I'll correct my post so as not to confuse people). Sometimes, the first time I clicked it, there was a line of white text below it -- it might have been a filepath as opposed to an error. I tried to recreate it, but had no problems this time. It was a few days ago I played the game. Did you upload a bugfix in the past few days? Maybe its already fixed.
Was this it?
I didn't implement any built-in error messages, so if this isn't it, it's probably from itch.io or Godot (the game engine). I didn't update the game (I don't think I'm allowed to while voting is taking place), but if this is the message, I can re-theme/remove it to reduce confusion after the voting period.
I believe it was something like that. I think this jam does allow fixing of significant bugs, which is why I had considered the possibility of an update being why I was no longer seeing it because it could have gotten fixed along with something else.
I had to play on easy to get anywhere, mean I kinda sucked at the game, so take that into account when reading these comments. :)
Fun idea!
Having the corn slow you down but not stop you is a fun twist on the traditional 'maze' formula. I found myself consciously thinking about when I wanted to follow the maze and when I was better off just pushing through the corn stalks, especially if the farmers were hot on my trail! :)
Having to press space to pick up the gourds slowed things down a little, but it also added some strategy because it wasn't enough to just get to the gourds, you also had to make sure you had time to pick them before the farmers got you.
Love the music, perfect fit for the game without being too obviously 'country' or 'farm' music!
The animation when the farmer catches you is brutal! He really pins that poor turkey down!
It took me a while to figure this out, but the one thing that was throwing me was that even though the it's a strict top down view, the camera is rotated 45 degrees relative to the maze. It shouldn't matter, but it gives everything a slightly 'isometric' feel to it, but that had my brain orienting the controls to the fence grid, meaning I would instinctively push up to move diagonally up+right on the screen, down to move down+left, etc. Once I realized what I was doing, I was able to correct my brain and control correctly. Probably my confusion is just a result of having played too many isometric games with funny controls as a kid.
I turned the camera 45 deg to try making the corn maze feel less grid like (though that was probably not a good idea). I could try moving it back to 90 deg (or would it be 0 deg :O?). I could also make the ending less abrupt (my brother thought it was rather sudden as well, especially with the close up zoom-in).
Thanks for playing!
Pretty fun game! The controls could have been simplified a bit, like you don't need backspace for the hatch, just use space. That threw me and I had to go again because I didn't know the key. But yeah, good mix of assets, solid game.
Thank you! I was worried about the controls :L. I was going to export it to android as well, but I ran out of time. I just now tested it on my phone's web browser and it hardly works there. For now, it's a PC-only game :).
