Description
I initially struggled a lot to get started this time, I had no idea what to do, the things I played doesn't sound great, and I was just in a creative rut. But then, the idea of a lyrics came to be when I was showering at midnight, so I though, huh, wouldn't it be cool if there was some singing? So that's how there are two tracks full of singing. It's partly inspired by Japanese Breakfast's Sable, and also Gris.

I still used Garageband on iOS because I'm a dummy. I tried using reaper but using it with my Casiotone keyboard have too much latency TT.

The lyrics are sung by bearwhy bearbye -

I did this while also working with two other submissions for the GMTK Game Jam while also hosting this jam. Wow me.

Message from the artist:
Hope you enjoy!

Theme:

Runaway
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
The game is about a character who is confined to the forest, living in a forest for their whole life, and dreams of going to a city and living a normal life, running away from home (which is the forest).

The use of sung vocals to highlight the theme through lyrics was a creative touch. Really like the mix of styles here!

I love you work with vocals!
Very interesting OST ^_^.

Now I'm very curious about the game!

Unique soundtrack, it's very refreshing to hear some lyrics! Nice work!

The Song of the Forest: As a vocalist by training, I really appreciate your use of recorded voice! Vocal parts add an extra element to musicality in that you get to choose the timbre and characteristic of what the sound says. I like your choice of emphasizing the “h” in the syllable you used as it adds an element of wind that might be blowing through the trees of your forest. This is a really cool submission and I also liked the mixing of it all!

Discovery: This track has such a lush sound to it. I love the low drone you have that just echoes throughout. The upper layers are all synergistic and while each is simple, they all come together to create a really cool and unique sound.

The Path Back Home: The plucky synth at the beginning such a fun sound. It reminds me of the various Wii menu themes and gives a sense of calm nostalgia from when I remember spending hours making all my different Miis when I was a kid. Maybe not what you intended, but I certainly appreciated it!

We All Dream: This is some great lyrical work. I think this really captures the theme for the jam from both the word theme and the picture theme. When the drums come in and change the feel to a swung rhythm, I loved that subversion of what I thought I understood about the song. That was such a cool technique to add to the meaning behind the lyrics in that there is more depth in the meaning the further into the song you get.

Day After Day: This one starts off with a strong chord progression vamp and intriguing rhythm. This one built up to something that I think became my favorite track in your OST. I listened to this one on repeat for a while. :)

Everything Must Come to an End: I am a big fan of the middle section in which the piano slows to what sounds like a slow triplet section while the melody stays within the same meter. This is a really cool polymetric effect. I like the somber tone of the harmony that accompanies the lyrical meaning and think this is a great end to the melancholic tale that your OST tells.

Overall: There was a lot of creativity and musicality put into this OST. It was so refreshing to hear something as unique as lyrics in a video game OST competition. I think you’ve set a new standard and I hope to hear more composers using voice recordings in future jams!

Pretty unique, haven't heard anything like that, the only thing I don't like is the piano plugin used, but i'm super picky for those XD. Good job.

The Song of the Forest - Quite a unique opening track. It took me a little time to get into it, but once you started harmonizing it, it was worth the payoff. Very cool idea. And it ends up being a very interesting track.

We All Dream - I really like this one. The combination of that pad with the long attack synth is really nice. I also quite like how you gradually changed the sound as it progressed. Beautiful.

The Path Back Home - Oh this is nice and chill! I really like it. I quite like how the bass syncopates with the rest of the tune. It's like taps on your shoulder. Especially once the beat also lands, it's great. It's a nice feeling when rhythmic elements come together like that. I think this is my favourite.

We All Dream - Vocals. Interesting. I'm imagining it could be cool under a cut-scene or something of the sort. I'm getting a bit musical-vibes from this. Very cool!

Day After Day - Another nice and friendly tune.

Everything Must Come to an End - Oh, suddenly a sad note. I'm a sucker for sad songs. I imagine that an ending with a song like this would make it linger in memory for quite a bit longer. Very very nice. This is a close second for me. Also, really cool sound effect at the end of it.

Very cool that you incorporated actual vocals in your tracks. I think it makes it a standout entry. Very nice work. I'd also be really interested in playing the game that you imagined with this soundtrack.

Really raising the bar here in your own jam :)

"We All Dream" reminded me of this song I heard recently called "When I Was Done Dying" by Dan Deacon. My partner said it reminded her of TV On The Radio. The first and last songs were sadder and reminded me of one of my favorite bands, Radical Face.

Also nice use of percussion, even when subtle, to build some of the songs and add movement. Great stuff overall!

P.S. I thought you were about to hit us with the lost woods theme at the beginning of the third song XD

Track 1: Immediate points to you for using anything recorded live-- in this case, the vocals! Definitely gave it a wonderful personal touch that helped this track stand out.

Track 2: I loved this synth-- definitely a cool, washy sound.

Track 3: this track sounded to me like a rainy day in animal crossing-- I really loved the minimalistic sound in the beginning.

Track 4: Again, really cool work here! I enjoy hearing stuff that isn't usually done-- and this is one of the first tracks for this jam that I've heard using singing in this way.

Track 5: this track ramps up the intensity without sacrificing the dreamy feel of the rest of the track-- good job with that!

Track 6: Great conclusion :) and the ending in particular was really cool!

Nice vibe! I think vocals would distract me in a game, but they fit well with your songs.

Certainly brimming with character and style - I really like the entries that make it easy to imagine the game that the tracks would ideally belong to.  Solid effort.

Some good vibes here, the inclusion of vocals makes this its own thing and makes the whole OST pleasant to listen to when it's in between instrumental tracks.

My favourites are "Discovery" and "Everything Must Come to an End".

Wonderful job; I definitely hear the Sable influence. The vocals were a nice addition too!

I loved your tracks !! they are really great ! I'd say what I love the most is your instrumentalization, the way each instruments fits perfectly at its place.
