Description
Unfortunately, I don't know genres at all, but the soundtrack uses almost solely a SoundFont (CC0) with all the sounds used in Undertale, so it has a retro/chiptune style to it. Apart from that, it's pretty dark, which is meant to reflect the feel of my game.
The game idea is a puzzle platformer called "Hiding Place." The main mechanic in the game would be things transforming when they get in shadow and using that to progress. However, when making this soundtrack, my main focus was on the story I was planning to tell.
TW: Suicide
You play as a girl named Bell who is trapped in, well, "The Hiding Place." However, in reality, Bell is actually in a coma after she attempted suicide. This reality she's trapped in is "her world," where she slowly tries to remember her life, face her inner demons (depression and self-hatred), and eventually gain the will to leave.
As you can see, this game is pretty dark, so I tried to reflect that in my soundtrack. However, the game wouldn't present you with all of the facts at first. The game would open with "how ive fallen," where some moments of her life would be shown in a cutscene, then a flash forward to her falling, then laying on the ground, then waking up. I've also thought that this track could maybe also be the main menu music. Not sure.
"the hiding place" would play during gameplay, as you try to solve puzzles using shadows and light. For that reason, it's a pretty chill track.
"im not hiding anymore" would play when you face the main boss, which is a dark creature representing your self-hatred. You would spend a great deal of the game running from this creature, and this would be you finally facing it. For that reason, it's more energetic than dark, which I'm not sure if I like. Oh well.
Lastly, "all my fault" would play when you gain your memories back after fighting self-hatred. It would play during a cutscene showing the events leading up to Bell jumping, and then her actually jumping from the ledge. So the track is meant to represent the dark realization that she did this. Again, not sure if this track turned out as I would've liked.
I created every track in FL Studio, which I finally started using for this jam. I had used it before, but mainly I made my previous music on a site called UltraBox.
I've only started making music in the last year and a half, and this is some of the only music I've released publicly. Hope it's okay :)
Message from the artist
This soundtrack is a bit interesting because although I'm supposed to make a soundtrack for a hypothetical game, the game that will use this soundtrack I'm planning to make a reality! As of writing, I'm currently working on a game for Pirate Software - Game Jam 15. That game jam has the theme "Shadows and Alchemy," and this jam has the theme "Inside my World." So I'm making a game that combines the themes, a game I call "Hiding Place." And I'm hoping to use this OST for that game - or at least most of it. I plan on reworking it a bit for the final game, but I thought it would be a fun extra challenge to combine these jams, so I did! :)
Theme
How does it fit the theme?
The game that the soundtrack is based on is about a girl living in a world constructed by her mind while she's in a coma, so she is "Inside her world."
