Explain your hypothetical game concept & how you interpreted the theme!
Made for the 2024 OST Minigame Jam #1
The theme for this Jam was 'Hero's Journey'.
I chose to represent this with a loose 'mirror' form, following the hero as they set out from their home to overcome a challenge, then returning home, but changed.
The optional challenge in this years jam was to use the whole tone scale, which I thought would be the perfect fit for the hero's conflict. Things got pretty weird in that middle section...
The musical aesthetic I aimed for was an odd mix of Kiasmos, The Electones, and that weird whole tone part reminded me a bit Earthbound's soundtrack...
Created in Logic Pro. Drums played by myself using Roland E-drums.
The photo was taken on holiday in Kyoto, 2023.
Thanks you Cryptid for hosting!

great work! Drumming especially! Love the 7/8 or whatever, not great at pinpointing time sigs myself…
Thanks!
You were right! That whacky bit you’re talking about is a bar of 7/8 followed by a bar of 4/4.
My spidey senses are telling me you have some level of education in your music. Did you go to school for composition? Nice use of alot of familiar tropes and musical phrases. I could see this being used in a Live theatre production. Great work!!!!
Thanks for listening!
Your spidey senses are correct! I hope that's not because my piece seemed pretentious and stuffy.... :P
No no no, Not pretentious. Very intentional, as in there are cultural tropes or reference triggers that communicate specific meanings or emotions for scenes. For example in tom and jerry they used descending notes to indicate falling objects (or nouns). This same idea is used in many cartoons and thus becomes a noticeable reference (for subsequent generations) that communicates a specific action or emotion for a scene. But only if said reference was a part of the popular culture which changes from country to country. Its a good thing, your music has a calculated complexity to it that doesn't waste space or try to hide behind the venire of more instruments.
hahah glad to hear that :P
Yes, tropes are very useful, and they became tropes for a reason. The whole tone scale itself has become a musical trope in itself!
You're 110% right; VGM and Film music often has to get it's message across in just a few notes, and utilising the common musical tropes can be the most effective way to communicate to the audience.
I. LOVE. DRUMS. eto prekrasno!
Beautiful, a bit experimental (especially the bit of terraria near the end). Cool!
Really well done with the whole tone scale middle part. And the more melodic sounding arrangement in the rest of the song was so good. The live drum playing added a lot to it. As a fellow Logic user, I approve!
Thanks for checking it out! Drums make everything better :P
Yes, while I do have some qualms with Logic, IMO it can't be beat for it's sounds and midi programming. (Haven't tried Cubase yet though... :P)
Loved the instrumentation on this. Great progression!
Thanks for listening! :)
Dynamic song that takes the listener through a journey. Great job!
Thanks so much for checking it out! :)
