What would you like feedback on?
Our movement is admittedly kind of weird, so we would be open to suggestions on other ways to implement or improve our movement.

What did you update?
We added the kitchen level, an online leaderboard, and objects that you are able to knock over to take out the mice

Name of updated upload (if downloadable)
Mouse and Cat 1.1

Hi, really appreciated the overall experience,

Problems:

- The mouses keep attacking the player after the game stops

- The game would benefit from some variety in sound design (random pitch and volume in range for sfx)

- Game needs a little work on the movement, there's a great free "game" from Mark Brown that could help you balance your 3Cs https://gmtk.itch.io/platformer-toolkit - This last advice is probably not that good but I think it would be great to add some silly stuff in the game like laser eyes for the cat or something…

I like the idea of charging jumps, but there should be an animation for that if there's going to be a mechanic.

I felt like there wasn't enough stuff to knock over in any level?

I liked the concept, jumping between different levels felt very natural!

Developer

We did talk about having an animation for charging the jump, but I didn't know how I would go about doing that while also allowing the player to move. If you were moving while any animation other than the running animation was playing you would look like you were sliding around.

I suppose another way we could have done it is to stop the player from moving while they charge their jump, play the animation, and then give the jump a move horizontal push as well. I do think that doing this would have resulted in making the game much harder and more frustrating to play though

Developer

The Leaderboards should be working now for both levels, I currently hold the high score for the kitchen and it should be pretty tough to beat but I welcome you all to try

About movement. It felt weak, until I realised that you can charge it while moving, which is counterintuitive for me, but it benefits the system. Maybe you should teach the player that or maybe I just missed it. Other than that I would say that it feels perfect now.

The gameplay loop get's boring quickly. I agree with the comment that states that there are too little object to knock. After that it's just running back and forth, until you die.

I can definitely praise the graphics, and audio fits well.

I like your graphics, animations and the audio.

I think the movement is generally okay, but the cat should jump a little more horizontally.

And for my taste the levels could be bigger.

Developer

We have updated the movement on the web version of the game and are working on fixing the leaderboards now!

I really like the art and music.

The slippery movement would maybe fit in better on a bigger level, or maybe with better acceleration/deceleration curves.

I also think you need a bit more objects to drop on mice or maybe some other way of attacking them.

but its nice, good job!

Developer

We have updated the web version's movement now so it should be less slippery. If you play again please let me know how you like it!

I really liked the music in this game. It really fits with the game. And the sounds match quite nicely as well.

Movement, as you say, is really slippery and very difficult to control. I could suggest using an animation curve to map how the acceleration behaves, and tweak linear drag to control deceleration rate.

Knocking objects to take out mice feels pretty fun, and thematically appropriate, but there are way too few objects for it to be that meaningful. So I'd suggest adding many more objects, since there seems to lie the core gameplay loop of this game (You jump, maneuver, and push objects to take out mice). Because, otherwise, it's just a pretty bare-bones platformer in which you run around. (No disrespect intended)

So... yeah, this has potential as a simple, nice minigame. Just lean further into the "knock over" verb, and this could turn into something pretty fun.

Side-note: I really love the cat's sprite. It's animated beautifully!

Very fun, but I don't think the leaderboard works

Developer

Should be fixed now!

Managed to top the leaderboard in the kitchen!

Anyways, fun premise, and I liked how tense it felt (the music helps there), but it could still use some improvements. Regarding movement, the fact that you have to "charge" your jumps a la Secret Rings felt counterintuitive, and I might've liked if it worked like other platformers where you jump as soon as you press the button, with your upward momentum halting once you let go. It also felt a bit too slippery for my liking. Collision detection felt weird (dropping objects on mice was especially unreliable), and the graphics, while fine, could've been much better.

Developer(+1)

We have toned down the slipperiness, however I don't think we are planning on changing the charge jump. If you decide to try out the new movement though please let us know what you think!

Super cute game, and quite fun! Definitely challenging but I was surprisingly able to last a decently long time by running back and forth between high places and timing my jumps well. I think one thing I would maybe change is adding a brief moment of invincibility after taking damage, so you can't just be killed instantly by a large swarm. Just my preference though, and I appreciate that also might make it too easy.

It's actually quite fun but just needs some touches on the movement and balancing.

For the movement, one thing is I think you should be able to come to a full stop as soon as you stop giving any input. Also, the speed of the cat and the animation doesn't really match it would be nice for the animation to actually feel like you're walking and not sliding you know?

The objects you can knock over are a good addition and would be nice to have more ways to crowd control like stun or slow the mice down by doing some cat things on the level.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! This was the main comment I had in my head when updating the movement, and now the web version should be changed so that you stop much faster when releasing the button. It isn't instant, and it also decelerates slower in the air, since I thought that felt best. If you play the game again please let me know what you think of the new movement!

Submitted

It definitely feels better. one more thing I noticed is maybe the mice should only damage when they hit you horizontally and when you land on them vertically you kill/stun them? or at least you don't take damage

good game! simple and fun. The music fits well with the game.

Great game. score 8065, Edit in movement will be nice.

This is a simple yet funny game well done :) The leaderboard doesn't seem to work. I like the addition of the objects that you can knock over. It took a little while to get used to the movement mechanics but once I did it was more enjoyable. Well done!

Developer(+1)

We have (hopefully) fixed the leaderboard now, thanks for reporting the issue!

Definitely a great Concept. Reverse ideology of Can & Mouse. Was very fun to play.

OK, Suggestions... First, there is a LOT of inertia. I phase through all objects I want to interact with, and can't take a desired position ever. Maybe it needs to be reduced to make the cat stop movement in a shorter time. Next, please move Interact to [F] butt on. And last, would be nice to have a minimum Jump velocity, so it will be possible to Jump for a minimum height if the space butt on wasn't held.

Developer(+1)

Heard you loud and clear on the inertia, and I've updated the movement to decelerate much faster when releasing the button. The interact button is still E, because I felt it would be easier to press while still pressing D to move if you were in a hurry, but if you try the game out again let me know if you like the new movement!
