Really fun game, I wasn’t expecting a bullet hell on this JAM, what a great surprise!

The music is frenetic, the bullets are well-synced with the rhythm and the patterns are interesting and fun to dodge. I went straight to Hard since I’m kind of a hardcore danmaku player, and it didn’t disappoint, hahah!

Great work :D!

If you don’t mind me showing off, here’s a video of my no-hit clears of the two Hard levels!

Thank you for playing the game! I am glad you thought those bullets were fun to dodge! Also, I am very impressed that you no-hit clear those hard levels, because I can’t do that!

Also, would it be possible to display this video for the itch.io page of this game?

Sure, feel free to use it!

Thank you so much!

That was really fun! The musics and rhythm was spot on. Great game, well done!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I’m glad you thought the music and rhythm of the game was good!

Oh man this is one of my favourites. Loved the way you implemented the theme, and the way the bulets sync with the music. Great experience playing this game. The fact that is simple to play is also such a good quality. Maybe a dash would be cool, but honestly idk, it's already so cool lol

Developer

Thanks for playing! Glad you had a great experience playing the game and appreciated the bullet sync with the music!

Fun fact: There already is an unintended dash feature that never should have made it in the game! You press ‘space’ and then you go invisible since there is no ‘dash’ animation and also become invincible to damage for a little bit. I didn’t do too good of a job implementing a dash though, so I planned on scrapping it.

If I ever update the game, I think a dash would be a good idea!

As a Just Shapes & Beats player, I really liked the game! It is really fun and challenging! And it can definitively be expanded with new enemy types, new songs, etc.

It would be really cool if the player had to destroy the enemy that follows them, by automatically shooting on beat, for example. Because it has the "problem" as Geometry Dash custom bosses: You dodge attacks until the enemy randomly self destructs or gives up. But that's definitively not a problem, just a suggestion that I'd love to see!

The visuals are really nice as well! I'd also love to see some post processing on this game, like bloom. I think it would really make the game stand out!

And I really like how you made the hitboxes. I've seen a comment that complains about the hitboxes, but I disagree with that. I could understand how they work by myself after 5 minutes playing.

Overall, I really like this game, great job! Let me know if you ever update this game!

Thanks for playing! I am glad you enjoyed the game and thought it was both fun and challenging!

Personally, I haven’t played Just Shapes & Beats but I have seen gameplay videos and was a little inspired I guess hahaha.

And yep, I think this game idea could definitely be expanded with more enemy types and songs. Different enemies can have different behaviors (One can lock on to a player, but not mirror alike the game) and also different projectiles (Homing? Accelerating?) that could represent more sounds in the music better!

An idea that I had was different themes w/ different art styles for the enemies, projectiles, backgrounds, and players depending on the song genre like Muse Dash does.

To address shooting, I was planning on having a little rhythm input game within the bullet hell game itself so that the player could shoot homing projectiles to the beat as well, maybe with enemy & player turns, but this turned out to be too much scope for the jam and the time I had, so I had to cut my game ideas.

Really fun game.  I had a blast playing it. Great job!

Thanks for playing! Glad you thought the game was really fun!

It would have been great to have some more visual variety, but it's a good little game.

Developer

Thank you for playing! Glad you found it a good game, and yes, it would have been helpful/better to have more visual variety! For the bullets specifically, changing how they look depending on pattern or enemy who shot it could make things more easier to read and improve the game!

the hitbox doesnt feel right

Developer

Hi, sorry you feel that the hitbox doesn’t feel right! Probably it needs to be more clear to the player which is why I mentioned it in the description of the game.

It is, however, more lenient than it looks as the hitboxes of the projectiles and the player are slightly smaller than what a player might expect to make it easier and less frustrating!

Very cool idea! I included it in my Rhythm Jam compilation video series, if you’d like to check it out!

Developer

Hi, thanks for playing the game and making a video for it! I have watched and I am glad you thought the idea was cool!

Hopefully later, if you have the time, you could give medium/hard difficulties a try, because they are the same songs but represent a lot more of the music!

Fun game with a lot of great songs. The music really carries the game.

I could use space to dash. However, I’m unsure this is intended as there’s no animation for it and it’s not in the description.

The game is nice but pretty generic. The enemy’s firing on-beat feels a bit like a gimmick.

Good entry for the game jam.

Developer

Thanks for playing, I am glad you thought it was a fun game!

Yes, the space to dash should not have been in the final release and was completely unintended. I had coded it but I scraped it, yet I never removed it because I had forgotten and so animations obviously don’t exist for it.

As for the game being generic, I can agree that it is just a bullet hell at its core, and the only unique part of the game is the mirroring enemy ship which makes it obvious their bullets are aimed and the fact that all of the bullets are spawned to the rhythm.

It could have been more unique, but limited by time constraints, I could not implement an idea where the player would shoot during the bullet hell by pressing any keys on their keyboard to represent buttons on the control panel of the ship. If this was implemented, I could have a good way to put score in front of the game and make it a lot more interesting!

I like the music and the movement of the enemy ships on the harmonies of the music. The hit box - even though it's explained in the description - still feels counter-intuitive, and the player movement is a bit choppy for a bullet hell game. Overall it's fun but nothing revolutionary. Kudos for using Godot, would like to see the code after the jam if possible.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and finding the game fun! I guess some things I can improve on if I make another bullet hell is a more intuitive hitbox that pops out more!

You are right that it is nothing revolutionary or groundbreaking, I guess it is a slightly different approach to how bullet hells work as one ship mirrors you which indicates the ship that shoots bullets aimed at the player which works well with the rhythm aspect because those aimed notes are more impactful.

Since time constraints are a thing of course, the idea that was supposed to supplement the bullet hell, which was rhythm inputs corresponding to keys on the keyboard to represent a control panel, ultimately had to be cut. It would have made it more interesting as the player could shoot back at the enemy to gain score in each level!

I love bullet hell rhythm games, I thinks its a genre we need more of. Great game!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing, I am glad that you liked it!

And yep, I thought that we needed more bullet hell rhythm games out there because it really makes the player feel more of the impact of the bullets being spawned!

Bravo! I really love the way the enemy ship firing patterns capture the instruments in each of the songs.  Very satisfying.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I’m happy you found it satisfying that the enemy ships represented the music well in the bullet hell!

I liked this one a lot, the rhythm is synced up to the bullet spawning very well and I liked that there was a large selection of levels.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I’m glad you liked the game and appreciated the large selection of levels!

Reason why there are a selection is because I know not everyone is up to dodging whatever projectiles I spawn on screen so I created multiple difficulties for each song so whether you are a pro bullet hell player or someone more newer to it, you have something that you can play!

I loved the interpretation of a rhythm game! Nice to see something different from just a guitar hero knock off

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! In the rhythm jam I didn’t want to make an input rhythm game that I had seen before, so I just opted to make a bullet hell where the player has to react to the incoming notes but by dodging them instead of hitting a button.

Initially, I did want to make an input rhythm game where the notes were keys on the keyboard like on a control panel during the bullet hell to make it so the player could fire back at the enemies, but I didn’t have enough time to make that happen lol.
