Title
Mazzer-Sieze

Description
HEADPHONES HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This song was created for a monthly music jam.
Theme:
Jazz Harmony
Optional Theme:
A picture of an endless white maze

My goal for this piece was to create the feeling of traversing a labyrinth where every crossroads forced you to choose between 2 options.
By having 2 different instruments playing on either ear, you get to hear their entire verse before picking the one you want.

I achieved this effect by having the instruments fade in to simulate getting closer to them, having them in either ear to show they were on opposite sides, and then, when one is chosen, you turn to go in that direction causing both instruments to merge in the middle as you are now hearing them front to back. The one chosen gets louder and the one left behind gets quieter.

It is also harmonious because the instruments mirror each other both in type, (woodwinds, brass, mallets) but they also share the same melody but flipped.

The only instruments playing more than 1 note at a time are the piano, the keys, and the mallets because I wanted it to be like an RPG party where each player is wielding a single instrument. It wouldn't make sense if the flute was able to play chords alone.

Plugins used
Pianoteq 6 - Piano, Marimba, Vibraphone
Pigments
SWAM - Double Bass, Sax, Trumpet, Bass Clarinet, Flute
Addictive Drums 2

What a cool journey this song has! I love the mixing concept you came up with - so perfect for this jam and a brilliant idea! I love how everything fades in, out and together - I love the base melody which ties it all in. Great job!

here's your homework lmao:

the song is really repetetive and it stays at the same intensity for way too long, the octave sax+trumpet is way weaker than what you probably wanted

in general the song feels weak because of the lack of sustained sounds

also the repetition makes the "drop" weaker too because it's on the same level with no extra instruments or change really

the song lacks dynamics, everything is on the same volume throughout the entire song

the bridge was definetly the best part because it finally wasn't repeating that same melody line and brought something new to the song

I'm not even going to comment on how expensive those SWAM instruments are and how much you underutilised them (please for the love of god do some automation😭)

I appreciate the feedback. I am always trying to improve my music so getting genuine feedback is nice.

I do have 1 complaint however, I intentionally made the melody repetitive because I wanted to fit the vibe of an endless maze, unsure of whether you are treading the same ground or not. I tried to make the repetitiveness more engaging by constantly adding new instruments but that didn't seem to work for you which I understand.

I agree with all the other criticisms though. I definitely could have done better with the dynamics and I am still new to the SWAM instruments which is why they feel underbaked.

I think you captured the theme perfectly here; really good job especially considering how soon you were able to put this out!

Right off the bat, I love the atmosphere and the percussion in the back. Overall, the panning is very nice, and the concept you explained is so creative and such a nice way to tell a story through the music. The mallets arpeggio is my favorite part it’s so good!! Wonderful work :)
