AI assets are so annoying

I'm trying to find vn backgrounds and literally 99% of what pops up is ai-generated. No, I'm not fucking paying you for something you had a bot generate via a database stolen from artists without the proper copyright or consent. Like can I please for the love of god just find backgrounds a PERSON actually DREW instead of someone who claims to be an artist bc they typed a sentence into Midjourney??? Idk. Just wanted to rant.  Wish they were easier to filter out, bc I am not paying someone for assets they didn't even make. I dont care if they added a filter to it in photoshop. Bc, again, ai is unethical as shit and half the time arguably very fucking ugly.

Honesty? Based opinion.

AI has its uses, but too many people act like it's a replacement for actual artists and actual effort.

Yeah! Honestly I think it's fine to use AI for pose references or just general ideas & concepts to get you started on a referenced piece but it's irritating when people try to publish ai work as... an artist's work. And again there are literally people posting ai assets on here and expecting money in exchange for them, bro if I wanted your ai piece that bad I'd literally generate it myself and make tiny tweaks in GIMP or Photoshop, it'd take me barely any time just like it took you barely any. There's no way these people are fr like "these ai generated images took me 60 hours please pay me" and deadass serious about it. Half the AI shit I saw while looking is priced higher than actual artist's work, too. If you're gonna post AI assets at least make them free.

Yeah, it's annoying as hell. I'm an illustrator and concept artist so I have several portfolios I keep updated andI have to see the whole thing of people trying to pretend that AI generated stuff was something they took a year to draw a lot. I still have a deviant art account for some reason as well( just because I've had it for a very long time I guess) and it's by far the worst there. Seems like over two thirds of the site are AI generated scams. At least places like Artstation seem to be dealing with it fairly well, but I don't know how varied are the assets you can buy there, since it's not the primary purpose of that site.

Also, op, on a totally seperate note, are you open to commisions? Are art style is super cute

I'm closed at the moment unfortunately, my job has been leaving me too exhausted to work on much of anything else. I can let you know when I reopen? And thank you!!! :D

There ought to be a label for non-AI-generated content.

Anyone can lie, of course, but at the moment most AI users are too prideful to try.

(+3)

There is. hand-drawn is even a suggested tag.

(+3)

I didn’t mean a tag, but a whole label outside Itch.io. This sort of thing is inevitably going to become a political issue within a few years.

(1 edit) (+3)

You do not create a label for the thing that is normal.

That always annoyed me with  non-smoking label. But I guess people back then that did not smoke were the minority.

While we are at it, why not also use a Made In Label. I want to discriminate against certain countries, so that I do not put money there, supporting them. What good does it, if you want to support human made art, if it came from chinese sweat shop. And yes, that is what they do for real paintings on canvas. You can google that.

AI  made is not quite true term. An AI was used to create it, but this is only half the truth. I dabbled with AI creation. For Stable Diffusion I can tell you, it takes skill and patience to  create good stuff.   Even with AI there is a human acting. And for human made art, some of the image editor tools feel like cheating, compared to real hand-drawn.

The issue with many AI, Stable Diffusion included, is similar to artists that trace other artists. Or copy other artists style  wholesale. This is century old behaviour in arts. And the AI is so dumb, that it even copies watermarks and signatures, if unchecked.

(1 edit) (+1)

I would agree, but there is never a consensus on what “normal” is. Just look at how everyone defines what it means to be American. Furthermore we can’t predict whether AI art will be a minority in a decade (and so become “normal”).

A label would be a clear-cut way to state your stance before any confusion could arise.

What good does it, if you want to support human made art, if it came from chinese sweat shop.

I’m not sure if you speak sincerely, but I agree. Blame legislation on not catching up with the Internet.

Regarding the normal thing.  Like basically all magazine covers are fake photoshop, and human models wear fake  faces by using makeup? Ever seen this Kardashian woman without makeup? ;-)

I did not get that stuff with the sincerity. Is this a translation issue? This is opinions we talk. What ulteriour motive could I hide by being not sincere? You think I am a chatbot in disguise?  :-o

No, I just know people tend to become cynical and sarcastic when it comes to these issues.

Ohh, and here I was proving your assumption.

And artists tracing for non-educational methods, posting that art (even if used to learn), and/or selling that art is bad, therefore not an excuse for AI art. Have you seen the shit tracers get in art communities?? Just look at Pink Cat, who got thrown out of a convention opportunity- an actual business opportunity- because of her tracing. AI works by literally mashing different images together so the style & reference arguments fall short. AI is unethical and steals from artists. And, ngl, I have played around with AI until I got something I liked before for fun! ...It does NOT take near as much work as actual art does and the effort is NOT comparable IMO, esp with the years artists take to learn how to draw/paint/etc.

(+1)

Where did you read that it is an excuse? I seem to remind that I explicitly worded it like a problem that (some) AI art has. It is not better (morally) than tracing.

If you were to outsource your art commission to a sweatshop, the artists that people want to protect from AI would still not have your commisions. Even better (actually, worse), if people condemn AI art, there would be more of an incentive to have such sweatshops, just to be able to tell, a human made it. You see similar evasions how companies try to get a label of Made in Country or for food , where they do one tiny step in production to be able to tell that the meat is locally made.

Against some AI one can argue with the trainging methods, similar to tracing, but those arguments would not hold for other AI concepts. The fact that you use mass production to put people out of jobs never worked as an argument   in the past. There need  to be better arguments against AI.

How about: it literally steals our art and breaks multiple copyright laws

"It" literally is a piece of software. "it" can do nothing, since it has no agency of it's own. And the discussion about AI training and laws is pending.

Your argument about AI that were trained with art from non consenting artists will be invalid for AI trained by public domain and consenting artists.

Saturn, I'm curious as to what your character's art style is like (for what kind of feel you're going for).

One technique might be an idea to search for CC0 images on the web. Either to trace them in a vector program and place raster textures within the shapes, or to cut them out in GIMP and create a collage from them. I'd be happy to give you a hand in tracking down CC0 images you're looking for.

The character in my pfp (assuming you mean them?) rn is meant to have a gothic feel, they're a character in a 1920s murder mystery project I'll likely never finish which is also what I'm looking for backgrounds for. I might take your advice on that, I feel those would work well paired with the sprite artwork.

Okay, here's what I could quickly find with free/cc0/fair-use/public-domain for 1920's style or gothic:

The website snappygoat.com seems to scan multiple sources. But you might need to search Pexels and/or Rawpixel directly.
A tip for legit copyright is the ability to see who actually made the content and a way to check their work. Even when attribution isn't required, it's helpful to keep record of where you obtained your media. In case someone tries to sue you, you have a paper trail defence. Especially if the person trying to sue you has no actual control over the material.

sorry for the really REALLY LATE LMAO reply but thank you <3

I only use AI as a reference myself, but then AI doesn't create 3d characters so it would be difficult to do that lol, but i agree, the only real reason someone should have AI on here is either free or clearly posted as AI generated.

(1 edit) (+2)

I'm not an expert in these things, but I think if the assets are tagged respectively I guess it's ok, there will be a very very small niche of people who want AI generated assets, I guess. but Itch.io doesn't allow to exclude tags. So many requests to remove tags and they haven't done it, it's just benefits, searching elements in itch.io would be a million times better if you could exclude tags. Web page programming must be a hard job.

As an illustrator, I should be super pissed off like everyone else complaining about AI and what they do but.... I guess I'm a bad illustrator for not complaining. It's something that's wrong but I end up in a "too bad" and go about my business. I feel weirder than I am for not being bothered on the same level as others with things like this, especially with something that technically affect me.

Itch.io add an option to exclude tags  in search pleaaaseeeee

Just formally it is possible to exclude tags but it is still workaround https://itch.io/t/160014/can-i-use-exclusion-filters

This does help, though even with the filter there's still a ton of them, either because creators don't know to use the tag or blatantly leaving that detail out.

If AI (or people by themself) doesn't kill people, I think in the worst case it will become a hobby. Something like "Look! I can do it by using my hands. I can translate my imagination to art by myself". Also I am going to learn generative art (do not confuse with AI generated art it is different things) because it is funny to create algorithms but maybe most AI fans can think this technology will die soon but I think in the worst case it will become hobby (now it is also hobby for most people who can do it...)

Is machine worse than people? People also study when see on a work of someone and try to imitate it. It is the same. If you will plant a monkey (with unlimited live) on chair and give typing machine.... One day you will see "Harry Potter" symbol by symbol created by random typing... If you want to "save" your style from "stealing" you mustn't upload it anywhere. And even in this case while it is possible to combine pixels in such way, early or late someone can do it....

I also believe in free/libre software so I don't think that something can be stealed (It should be free IMO before it can be stealed)....

P.S If you thought in another way, I also don't like how AI used...

The problem is how people create/use the AI, not the AI itself (As I said in another post), i.e., we need regulations and tech tools to avoid AI based on stealing other people's work.

iirc, the US patent office rejects IP claims for AI generated art, so right now Artists being replaced by AI is not an immediate threat, but it will be soon, when we won't be able to tell the difference anymore, so our society must be participating because if we only let the big companies decide we will be screwed.

Almost all of these are made by AI in some degree, but also edited to not be generic. Couldn't AI art be used as that, a tool to help, especially if you're not that good at drawing but knows what style you're looking for?

(please ignore the first half of the images, you know the characters that look more obviously AI generated, they're not done yet)

Personally I don't want to use AI because it's built off the backs of non-consenting artists and therefore unethical.
