[Music] I want to compose the music for your game

Why hello there,

My name is Nathaniel, and I'm a semi-professional composer from the UK. I haven't had any commissions in a minute, so I decided that I'm going to take this big ball of pent up creative energy and fire it at something I have wanted to do for a long time: create some video game music! Most of my professional work (see below) has been for corporate films and story-driven documentaries, along with my personal creative projects that I fit in around my full time work.

So, if you're in need of music, and you're searching for someone extremely motivated to join an interesting and exciting project, shoot me a message! Also, whilst I am professional in my interactions and very motivated to produce high quality work, I have never been involved with game development before (beyond a few hours messing around in Unreal Engine!), so please bear that in mind. :)

If you're expecting me to work for free, then it really has to be a project that I'm interested and excited by - and if I am, let's go and make something great!

Thank you,
N

Compositions/commissions:

Arrangements:

What kind of project would get you interested and excited?  I wasn't looking for music just now, but it would be cool to get someone on board.  I'd love to pay you, too, if we could work out an arrangement for that wouldn't blow my pocketbook out of the water.

Hey! I am open to literally anything.  I love challenging myself to write and compose for all kinds of different things, in as many genres as I dare - so, I'd be delighted to talk if/when you have something on the go. Also, in terms of money, I am also here for a great experience, and don't intend on charging my full professional rate, so just hit me with what you have, and let's get to work.

Thank you for replying,
N

Hello! You said you take music creation requests?

Yep, I sure do! I'm super motivated for any concept or challenge you might have, so let me know what you're thinking and we can maybe make something great. ^^

Thanks,
N

I need you to remix the hardcore mode music for airplane and make it sound better and make it about 4 and 1/2 minutes long. Once I put it into the update, I will make sure to credit you.

Deffo bro. Could you hook me up with the track? I had a go at playing the game to hear it, but I'm so bad that I can't hear more than ten seconds of it without getting blown up, lol.

The actual track is chaoz fantasy. The only thing is that it's the 8bit version.

Ok, I have listened to the track a few times. There is loads we can do with it. Do you want it to sound like a remix of that version, or an original piece that sounds very similar to it?

Make it sound like a remix of the track from the game and don't forget to make it 4-4 and 1/2 minutes long.

Well now that I think about it... Make it have some aspects from the original track. (Like the fade in at the beginning) But still keep it 8bit.

Ok, no prob. I have a good idea of where I'm going to take this. I'll have something for you to listen to in the next few days, what's the best way to get in touch? Email? Discord?

Is it possible we can keep in contact here and you can send download keys with the music in them to me?

That's fine with me. I have started work on it, so I'll send you a reply when I have something for you to hear.

Thanks,
N

Yo, I am making excellent progress and I'll have something for you to hear on Monday or Tuesday at the latest. I'm working all weekend, so I'll dive all the way in on Monday. I'm having a great time with this one, so thanks! ;)

N

Also, be sure to keep the 8bit vibe in the track.

Also, I need this done by Mar. 1st or earlier and make it a .wav file.

Hey bro,

Here is the first pass. Still plenty to do, but it would be good to get your feedback at this point.

Let me know what you think!

First off, 0:0-0:23 make the main tune fade in and the rest of the instruments fade in after like the original and when the last few notes of that tune plays, have the music go from 80% to 100% volume but still try to keep it natural. 0:46-0:56 at the last note where it plays a C#, make the note stop when the last drum sfx plays just like the airplane version. At 2:04, make a lower pitch version of 0:46-0:56 where the first note for that part (0:46-0:56) matches with the note played at 2:04. At 3:47, add a note at the background that starts extremely low and slowly increases pitch (and increases in volume a little bit) for the duration G# is played. Around the 4:00 mark where it does the second to last repeat, cut off a part of the 2nd to last repeat and blend it in with the last repeat (In other words, take a good part to cut off (not a random portion) and set the volume to the same volume as the last repeat.). At the last note of the track, instead of doing one note, let the last repeat finish fully (include the part where it sounds like 0:10) and then while the repeat is finishing, have an octave fade in and at the part that sounds like 0:10, have both the octave and the normal pitch go from 80% to 100% volume for the last 6 notes (Make it sound natural: don't make it sound like you put your speaker volume from 5% to 100% volume.). Also, make the track sound more like the airplane version (Link in next message) and don't repeat the same tune over and over.

I know this may be a long text and hopefully it's not burning you out. Overall, 8.5/10.

S'all good, it's always great to have specific feedback. I'll get on all of that asap. So long as we're heading in the right direction, I'm happy. ;)

And also, make the 2nd part of the tune (0:46-0:56) finish like how it does in the airplane version. Also I finally turned the airplane hardcore mode music into a link. https://drive.google.com/file/d/14KAiDxSfDr8LsqGwyagBa36fvGE52nav/view?usp=drive...

Hey,

This is what I have, so far. I don't think I quite understood what you meant about the ending, so could you listen to this and give me a bit more direction from that?

Also, re the low note at 3:47 under the G#, I just need a bit more clarification as to what you're looking for.

Finally, when you said 'make the track sound more like the airplane version (Link in next message) and don't repeat the same tune over and over', do you want it to have that super compressed 8-bit sound? The authentic crunchy low quality feel, or were you referring to something else? And as for 'don't repeat the same tune over and over', what does this refer to?

I'm really having a great time with this, and I appreciate your direct and insightful feedback - I just want to make sure I am doing it right!

Thanks!
N

More things to add:

  • On the last 4 notes of the track, make the octave higher in volume and remove the 80% to 100% volume at the end. (Do that or have the last 4 notes go from 80% to 90% in volume (Recommended) and make sure to do the last 4 notes and not the last 2 this time.)
  • Try and copy 0:00-1:10 on the airplane version and make it 0:00-1:10 on the remix.
  • 0:12-0:19 have an octave (Like the one at the end of the track) ascend in volume. At 6 notes played at around 0:20-0:23, make the octave go to 100% volume and then have the octave descend in volume to about the same volume as the main tune. (0:00-0:12) (And after 0:46-0:56, when the main tune comes back on, don't have the octave play.)

Clarification:

  • When I said "Make the track sound more like the airplane version", I meant that as in both the sound and the parts from it.
  • At 3:47, basically make the really low note (with low volume as well) ascend in pitch and volume.
  • "Don't repeat the tune over and over", Don't repeat 0:00-0:12 or 0:46-0:56 too much. In the track you repeated it like 4 or 5 times.
Hopefully this cleared up some things for you.

Let me know how this is. Cheers.

Make the bass at 0:12 a bit louder, idk if you added the octave at the beginning but if you did, try to make it louder and make the 8bit notes sound exactly the same as the ones in the airplane version (Or something close to it). Other than that, it looks good.

I tried as hard as possible to get the instruments sounding as close as I can, it's just tough given that I don't think I have the exact same instrument that they used. Hopefully this is getting close now, though.

Hold on, nvm about the part where I said dont repeat the main tune too much.

Good evening, Ubernaffa!

If you'd like, I'm more than happy to discuss the themes / plot / aesthetics of my story and see if you might resonate with it enough to make music for it. I plan for it to be around 3-4 hours max and possibly even less so at most no more than 7-8 tracks max possibly? You're more than welcome to discuss your prices as well.

(+1)

Hi there Dioclaud! I'm interested, already! I'm not sure what the best way to chat about this would be, maybe email or Discord? Either way, I'd love to discuss your story, and get my creative juices flowing. I'm super flexible with pricing, and am not intending to charge my full rate - if anything, money could be spent on enhancing the quality of the music production, so we can talk about that, too!

Thanks for getting in touch,
N

Hi there @Ubernaffa ! (this currently isn't urgent and you can take your time on it) Me, A Scratch (scratch.mit.edu) user and potentially other users, are about to start development on a scratch programmed  Game; Run A Laptop Tycoon, a game about… Laptops! it is supposed to be better (imma try my bt for this) than the whole RATBT (Run a tech business tycoon) series with more things to upgrade with and more items.

We are still looking for a 3rd developer, a voice actor and (you fall into this category very nicely) Musician (or music maker for the game) i was wondering if you would like to accept this position?

I am offfering:

-Full unlimited access to all my games.

-33.3% of all income from RALT for 12 months (its a year because of the fact we might not make income for a bit of time)

-Access  to info on future projects or game ideas (as long as you want it for)

-Access to the game files to RALT for as long as you want for free.

nothing will be removed. let me know here (or on scratch @VParant24) sorry discord is broken rn so i will let you know (if you want) when it works again!

see you around!

Hi there!

Thank you for getting in touch. I am extremely interested and while I'm not a voice actor, I would be more than willing to have a crack, lol. The only thing I want to ask before saying yes conclusively is for you to give me a sense of what kind of vibe you're thinking for the music. I put maximum effort into everything I do, and I care about my work a lot - so, I want to be certain that I'm the man for the job before saying yes and realising that I'm not.

But if we end up on the same page, I would be delighted to accept.

Thanks again for messaging, and speak to you, soon!
N

Ok nice!

The stye of music we are looking for (i have terrible music taste) is kind of motivational, yet calm and lo-fi? that seemed to work well for RATBT3 (songs off choosic and one my other friend made)

Dose that work wwell? the music style choice? i dont know (sadly).

(+1)

You don't have a terrible music taste, lol. You might not have the musical vocabulary, but that doesn't mean you have bad taste. :)

Ok, bro, I'm down! Let's go ahead make the greatest laptop management soundtrack of all time. If you want to take this to Discord or email, let me know your username/address. And if you want me to have a go at the voice acting, send me a couple of lines to record, I can send them to you and you can decide if I'm the guy for that. ;p

Thanks!

(1 edit)

k email is fine, ok lets see for the voice acting! :)

Let me start a new thread to make our lives easier. First, make an 8bit version of sonic blaster. (Try to make the piano solo sound 8bit and like a piano.) Once I have reviewed and accepted it then you can start on the other one I sent you. (You can take a look at it but I wouldn't recommend you start on it until your done with sonic blaster.)

Sounds great. I managed to spend quite a lot of time on it today, and the Monday/Tuesday estimate I gave you is on the money.

It'll be good for me to start listening to the new one asap, so that I have a good sense of the track when I start working on it.

Wait, your saying the Monday/Tuesday estimate is on jeopardy or I actually have to pay for it. (Sometimes I am not good with figurative language.)

Nooo, I mean that I am making good progress so that my initial date of Monday/Tuesday was correct, and I will have something to send you by then.

And re money, if there isn't a clear agreement before I agree to start working, there is no money involved. So, don't worry about it. Just remember me when you get your first game released on Steam. ;)

Ooooh ok. I understand.

Yo, let me know how this is and how you'd like me to proceed. Cheers.

Ok. The only thing you need to focus on for this one is to make sure it sounds nearly IDENTICAL to the actual thing. For this one you are allowed to other instrument options and not just chiptune and squarewaves. As long as it sounds somewhat 8bit, I will accept it. So, go over it and try to make it sound like the original track and an 8bit version.

Ok, that shouldn't be a problem. Do you have a date you need this done by? Figuring out specific synths does take me a bit longer to do than just transcribing the parts - so, I can't be sure how long it'll take me to get them sounding just right until I delve into it.

I need sonic blaster by itself done by mar. 1st. Also, here is an example of what I mean by partially 8bit. I want sonic blaster to sound identical but still have some 8bit components. (A good idea is having the main instrument like the original and have an 8bit octave playing the same thing as the main instrument.)

How is the music going?

Yo,

My apologies for being out of touch over the last few days - I have been very busy at work. I have still been working on the track, though. It has been pretty tough, but this is what I have, so far.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uwSEw0ORKedFEe7D4z2_f9s_hNS0mlAt/view?usp=shari...

Something about the beginning seems... saturated. Try and make the beginning part more alive and also try and add some type of overdrive guitar sound to it. (Maybe replace the instrument for the main beat with the overdrive guitar.)

Also, go based off of the youtube video (the sonic blaster one) not off of the last track you sent

Yo, I'll be uploading a new version for you in a couple of hours.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zAJgKs6j2t-7nJ_bzFEDd3WBo7VxhYGh/view?usp=shari...

Make sure the rhythm for the melody AND the harmony both sounds exactly the same as in sonic blaster. Also, the main tune kinda sounds a bit sharp. Is there a way you could fix that? (Other than that, looks good.)

Alright, it is going to be tough, but I'll try and make it sound exactly the same. I have emailed F-777 to try and find out what synthesisers they used, lol.

Ok, I still haven't got it to sound exactly like the track, but it is much closer.

There's still more I want to do, but you said you needed it by March 1st - so really pushed to get it to this point.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RlfQmV0177o9XHWOWnQErSDWn4TaWlJS/view?usp=shari...

Are you still looking for projects to work on?

hey you alive? i dont mean to be disrespectful,

im just checking in on you, also about the music, a friend of mine got into garageband recently (for mac) and he made a banger that i am using for the title song, we now have 9 official songs (4 of which aren't custom and from other scratch projects) and i still think we need more, my friend (OST music guy) is working on 3-4 more (to be included in full game)

which brings us to a total of 13-14

……

BUT WE NEED MORE!! i am just wanting to know, how is everything going? (you dont have to do the music if you dont want to im not forcing you, I'll still (gladly) give you the files to PCB24 so you can test it out)
