Track description | Creative process
The track started with a simple progression on the acoustic guitar. I made use of the minor fourth (iv) chord to give it a nostalgic feel and decided to fingerpick it.
Trumpet and wurly keyboard were programmed from samples and provide the melody. Lastly, I recorded a simple drum pattern.
This track taught me a little bit about how to record actual drums. I placed a dynamic mic into the kick drum and recorded the rest of the kit with the onboard condenser microphone of a Zoom H5 handy recorder. The result is certainly not perfect but it was a lot of fun to experiment with.

Good luck to all the rest of you and happy music making :)

A nice track, the acoustic sound and real instruments gives a lot of life, I suppose it wasn't easy recording live. Maybe the melancholic mood is not ideal, but it was a good listen!

0:35 and 1:05 are standout moment that do feel very nostolgic, so i think you did great accomplishing your goa l. The guitar especially fits the theme so well! And cool you learned drum recording, came out great here

As others have said, the live instrumentation was a good choice. The track is lovely and I can tell you put great effort into this, good job. I honestly have no idea how to record drums without getting a bunch of drum mics so its really cool that you were able to do it without all that and make it sound pretty cool.

I think you captured that nostalgic feel pretty well, this track is so beautiful, like others have said I think the volume balancing could be shifted to give clarity to the guitar since it feels a little overshadowed by the rest of the instruments. But otherwise this is such a pretty composition!! Amazing work!

The panning works great, but i agree with Cloud Castle Audio that the guitar could be a bit clearer. Really love the vibe, good stuff!

I'm rewarding your good live recordings, and the great mood you have achieved. Thumbs up!

Putting in the time to record yourself with real instruments is no joke ! The panning is great, and mixing works well for me :)

I would have loved to have more variation on the melody and instrumentation, but overall feels very nice :) Good job !

Hey, thank you for appreciating my effort in recording real instruments. I am still a little divided on recording drums - getting them right seems so hard, I wonder if it is worth it. Maybe for a jazzy song? I would argue that programmed beats have a certain appeal too. Let's see if I will give it another shot anytime soon ^^. Thanks for your comment.

Composition-wise this is a beautiful piece. I also like that you've panned the instruments, though it's a little extreme on my headphones. The trumpet seems to have been exiled to the far right away from the band.

Developer (1 edit)

Perhaps the trumpet is a little too distant - that's a good observation! I have to admit that I have not given my mixes too much thought yet - I play with the volume and pan around until it feels okay. Maybe in the future, I need to return to the mix after a break to spot these details. Thanks a lot for giving me hints to improve :)

I really like this piece, I don't think it sounds particularly tropical, but in some ways it baggily reminds me of Radiohead/The Smile, I can even  imagine Thom York's voice singing over it, and that's a very good thing. Good job!

Nice, it fits well with the vibe and the concept of the theme I think ! It's calm, catchy, it doesn't take over the attention of the player too much, it's not too heavy or dense - it works well :-)

I like the instrumentation choice - especially the trumpet tbh, and the way it feels in the back, in the distance, but warm and present, comforting. The electric guitar(?) that's pan to the left feels a little muddy and could use some clarity I think, but overall nice use of the stereo field and your levels feel alright - if lacking a tad in the low ends, maybe a bassier instrument ?

Congratulations on a nice entry :-)

Good tips, thanks a lot !

I really liked this, the beginning was super nice. It kind of dragged out a little bit but that's a good thing, the fact that it's not super dynamic might make it a bit better in the background anyways. Great job!

Yeaaah, maybe I need to introduce a little more variation on the melody. I tried repeating it a few times to make the track coherent, but it could use some spice to stand out, certainly if it were a stand-alone track. Thanks for the feedback :)

Yeah don't worry too much though, like I said the fact that you kind of forget a bit about it as you go can be good too in a way, as it helps blend the track in the background while playing. Good job!
