How does your game represent Mode?
We took the creative liberty of applying the theme "mode" through the remaster mode switch mechanic and building the entire idea around remastered game vs. original game playthrough. Player is playing as a streamer tackling the challenge of playing 2 games(classic and remastered) at once with one controller.

As we build the game with the original vs. remastered in mind, the mode switch affect the entirety of the graphics and audio. Switching between them also affects various elements in the levels: enemy behavior, rotating platforms and spike traps.

There are also two difficulty modes: normal and hard. Hard mode offers more challenges with a secret reward in the end for those who dared to try ;)

--

For those who wants to do all the fortune cookie collectibles: There are 11 in total. 10 hidden in normal mode, and 1 from finishing hard mode. You can check what you've collected in extra section of the main menu. We didn't have time to add completion meter but if you want to try to unlock all 11 good luck!

Incredibly well fleshed out game, really good platforming mechanics that takes everything it throws at you and tests you in different ways.

Excellent very polished platformer with excellent art & audio.
Really like that each area of the game required different tactics.
Great work!

Loved this game! Great art in both original and the remaster! Well done!

This is honestly an extremely professional and competent platformer with a lot of appeal and pretty much professional-grade everything, down to extra bonus content. Apparently I brute forced a lot of solutions, but it's great when a platformer has enough options to let the player experiment and express their gameplay in different ways. In my case, my brain's smoothness and bounciness helped me clear heights hitherto unknown. >:3

This is very polished and well thought out. The mechanics feel solid and the puzzles have a great difficulty progression! The instructions are very simple and effective.

Seriously fantastic. A legitimately good platformed doesn't rely on gimmicks, but instead uses the gimmicks to enhance great level design. A fairly simple concept executed with great professionalism.

Thanks for the game, had a great time and played to completion.

What an amazing and cohesive platformer! Love the way you incorporated the theme of mode in a multitude of engaging and fun ways. Great work!

Nice platforming experience you got going on there! Remaster and classic is a very good take on thème aswell.

Loved the streamer intro ;)

amazing platformer. great art and music. the level designs are sick. and the movement is flawless. no notes. great game.

Felt like a fully fledged game! Love the overall aesthetic - the art and music for both modes. The game felt incredibly polished and the difficulty felt satisfying. I beat normal mode but will try out hard mode a bit later after reviewing some other games.

Incredible amount of polish in so many places. I love the art, the differences between remaster and classic mode are awesome. I love the chill main/pause menu too! Level design is top notch, I feel like it was really solid in using all the mechanics of the game and the check points felt fair. Really good job, y'all should be proud!

This was professionally made, well done! :)

(Normal mode speed clear on second try with a couple deaths)
Needless to say, I've enjoyed the game a lot! Started with Hard Mode (38 minutes clear ^^'), and despite skipping the tutorial, player mechanics were intuitive and fun to learn. The game is really well designed, and really feels like The Messenger in some ways, especially the stage 3 and its bgm.

Maybe player movement could be tweaked a bit, as it did feel finicky in some parts. The staff would also sometimes break when you try to hit a corner of a wall, which may mess you up when you don't expect it. But certain bugs/exploits are actually pretty fun and could be interesting to play with - namely, the momentum you gain when jumping off of a moving platform, and also a bug with any wooden part in the middle of its state transition - switching modes very quickly during the transition would keep the part in its transitioned state. Not sure if the latter has any practical use, but I hope it doesn't get fixed :)

There are so many other details I enjoyed, like the 16:9 to 4:3 aspect ratio switch, classic spikes having clearer hitboxes than remastered, being able to switch modes during menu, intro and credits...  tl;dr 5 stars across the board from me. Congrats on finishing the jam!

wow props on starting with hard mode. and congrats on your normal mode time, very impressive.

I was actually thinking of doing an extra level based on the platform momentum but decided against it so we could do some more polish in other areas.

Not sure what the phase skipping of rotating platforms could actually do tho. It's more a result of finding a solution for how quick mode switching should be handled in an intuitive way.

Thanks you for the kind words and thanks for playing :D

Holy moly, that's amazing. I never expected someone who started off in hard mode, let alone finishing under one hour in first try. That's a very impressive speedrun time too!

Props for you to find our small secrets there!

Thank you for playing our game! We're really happy to hear you enjoyed your time with it!

Hey great job guys! Love your take on the jam theme, and I want to call out that it must've been a decent amount of work to have to make the game's art assets twice. But you guys nailed it, and there are tons of details I appreciate in both remastered and retro mode. And the game is just a ton of fun - I love the mechanic of throwing your staff in to a wall and bouncing off of it, that's a pretty simple yet fun spin on this type of platforming game. You guys did awesome work on all fronts, well done!

so looking at the game page i was getting a little suspicious. “was this actually a real game?” i was thinking that the whole remaster vs. original thing was the mode gimmick, and i was right! this turned out REALLY good. on their own the movement abilities are already SUPER solid, i could see this already being a great game even without the twist, but the twist makes it even more interesting to play. i loved the way the enemies switched behavior depending on which mode you’re in, especially the rabbits! the game also looks incredible!! i can’t believe you went through all the effort to make every single asset twice, while keeping both styles consistent and super cute. (i also loved the way the aspect ratio changed in retro mode, it made it feel even more authentic!) good job (and good japes)!!!

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I'm glad you noticed and enjoyed those little details we did!

This was really good! I was genuinely confused at first, did they just remaster a favorite childhood game? Ha. The level design was very clean and allowed the player to use abilities in creative ways. Fun interpretation of the theme.

You're not a real gamer if you never played Legend of Lu (original) back in the 90s 😂

Really great job on finishing that within the time of the jam. Controls were really smooth and satisfying. Overall super polished and complete. The thing I like the most were the 3 energy flames and how they are spend for different actions. I have never played the original game but I already see much potential in this kind of energy system.

beat my speedrun(normal mode)!
(should be easy, I died a lot here)
