i love the art in the game!

Developer

Thanks, I am happy you liked it. The art was actually made by Bird of Man. He made a great job!

Congrats on getting the #1 Overall spot! This game is a lot of fun. Love those chunky pixels and the way the camera moves with the mouse slightly in the game and even on the start menu. It took me a few deaths to realize how to load the gun. I just want to keep playing, but it seems death is inevitable for a person armed only with a candy gun. There's really a lot to pay attention to, makes for a great gameplay loop, and it makes me want to restart and play again once I do bite the dust. Overall top notch game. Congrats again! You deserve all the praise!

Developer

Wow! Thanks a lot! I always thought we needed to be a big team with year of experience to win a jam this big. I never thought we would win this, it feel unreal! I am definitely proud of what we made and I will definitely continue to work on this little game to publish it as a full release! Thanks for the comment!

The mood is sublime, everything seems so hostile and the tension builds up when someone is going to knock on your door. Loved it!

Developer(+1)

THank a lot for the feedback! It make me happy that the atmosphere was done right. That mean that I will try to keep the atmosphere as it is when expending on the game

Nice game loop, simple and fun, well designed !

I can definitly do higher score but i have other things to do. And I killed one cops, that's a victory.

Developer

Thank a lot for trying out our game! Congrats for this huge highscore! I am curious about what strategie worked for you? I prefered making the game easier than harder for a game jam. Thanks for the positive feedback, I will go check out your game when I get the time.

During free times i put many candy as i can under the candy bag, not too much just in case cause the game limit the number of candy you can pull off, so i keep some to be able to also drag candy from the bag. When delivry guy come, i put letters in a side and wooden planks in another side.
Then I take the gun and open the door. When it's the kid, I drop the gun and take fast a candy  to give him, usually he have times to make 2 knock max, sometimes none. When it's a monster I spam shoot, cause sometimes the first shot doesn't hit, then i drag the gun at the candy pile to reload, and get ready again for the next.
Now all i have to do is not shooting the wrong guy cause with the pile of candy i can fast reload and chain the monsters if needed, like i tried in a run for the test to kill delivry guy first time  then kill as cops as i can, and I killed liked 8 cops before dying.

When i've reached 216 points I had like 10 wooden plank left and used only 2.

Also if the monster come inside to rush to me, you can close the door fast and the monster will be set back to the door, so when i need to reload, the door close itself, giving me some more times.
And in my run i didn't took my times to look who's outside cause i just wanted to rush, but you can definitly play more safe at the end to make higher score.

Developer

Thank for the reply, this will help a lot to balance the game while keeping what is fun and interesting!

I remember seeing this one on the discord! Turned out really well!

It got really tense once my door broke, and I was just pointing the gun at the kids just in case there was a monster!

Developer

Thanks, I didn't know at first how it would turned out and if I would even have the time to finish but I am glad it turned out well. I thought before submitting that my game wouldn't be scary but it seems like it still was, so it's great

Submitted(+1)

This was a ton of fun. I made it to about 3 the first time because I was just winging it but once I figured out what I needed to do I made it to about 49. This was really awesome. I dig the art style and the idea in general is a really great way to play with the theme. Nice work!

Thanks again for playing Untangled and congrats on finishing!

Thank a lot for the positive comment and for having played my game. I am happy you liked it! Yeah congrats for your game too

HOLY COW I KILLED A FRICKIN CHILD 😥

This game is just WONDERFUL, I don't have better others to describe it other than fantastic and beautiful! Congratulations on creating one of the best games i've seen in this jam!

Like, holy cungadero, your game gave me more goosebumps than half of horror games I've played in my entire life. I experienced a emotion of fun and fear mixed, idk how to call it lol

You nailed everything, the art and sounds are amazing and the concept is a great interpretation of the theme, I loved this game! Thank you guys for creating this masterpiece

Developer(+1)

Wow, thank you for this wonderful comment, I never thought I would make a game that would get this appreciated. We hope to continue to work on it and release it with way more feature. I am glad the time that I spent developing it was worth it

Oh god, I was not expecting that xD. I thought it was just going to be a simple little game with less than 1 minute of playtime, and here I am, sweating, trying to survive in this thrilling night and having a BLAST.

Let's start with the obvious: you absolutely NAILED the theme. Waaaaay too many jammers just do a classic game, add a door as an ending trigger and call it a day. Not yours. The theme leaves within your core gameplay, and it's an absolutely AMAZING concept. Your game is the reason why game jams exists: capturing the essence of a theme and building something around it. It's absolutely beautiful.

But an idea, even an amazing one, is nothing without the execution behind, and oh boy, you delivered. I didn't have to look at any instructions, everything is explained clearly and feels natural. Of course, a couple of children (and a mailman) had to be sacrificed during the learning process, but it really didn't took long and it was fun! At first, I found that the game was a little bit slow and easy, but at least it allowed me to get started.

And then it started to speed up.

And that's where the fun REALLY began. Going faster and faster, trying to read the letters without taking too much damage, the quicker and quicker decision making, what seemed to be "easy" started to become harder and harder. The risk/reward in this game is absolutely on point: of course, you can take the time to think about what to do, at the cost of damaging your door, but you can also play greedier, holding candies with the door opened, and trying to react to the monsters before it's too late (because of course, you had the genius mind to put more children than monsters, so of course, candies are better). That's top notch game design right there.

The sound design is really on point and helps a lot. Trying to react to the noise feels amazing. The ambiance is creepy, but I also appreciate you didn't go all the way to the "jumpscare way", because I hate jumpcares. The atmosphere is amazingly creepy, it's beautifully done.

And finally, there is the climax. The door breaks and you had this wonderful idea of NOT ending the game right here. I was surprised, but it was the best feeling ever. The moment I realised that the game was continuing and that I'm now in "overtime", I had that adrenaline rush that I never experienced with a jam game before. The survival instinct kicked in and it felt just amazing.

I could go on and on, but the general message here is: this game is absolutely amazing. I was a little bit deterred by the graphics at first (not about the art *itself*, but usually this kind of graphics are used by quite low-quality jam entries^^'), but very quickly, the quality of the game brought me above that.

Congratulations, you can be proud of you, I had an incredible time playing your game.

Developer

WOW, your comment bring me so much joy! After finishing this game at 2 o'clock in the morning I couldn't believe my game would receive such wonderful comment. It seem like the time paid of. I wasn't sure most of the time when making game design decisions and the game became something totally different that I imagined. I am really happy I could make you feel something special while playing the game. We will surely continue to work a little bit on this game to give a total experience. You comment definitely brightened my day!

I keep accidentally shooting the mailman 10/10

Developer(+1)

Ahah, thanks for the funny feedback. Cool!

WOW!! I love everything about this game.

It's very simple, straight to the point, but the loop is so engaging I had a ton of fun and will be playing more to chase high scores. My first playthrough got a score of 165 (if you don't count my first where i died at 2 because i didn't figure out the gun).

The atmosphere provided by the dark graphics and crunchy audio is very forboding. As the game sped up it became a hectic test of quick reaction, but the door being there kept me feeling like I had some control over the situation.

When the door unexpectedly broke with no way to repair, that point forwards was the peak for me. I stopped feeling like I had any control over the situation, but in the best way possible, like it was a true test of everything I learned up to that point. It felt crazy having 5 monsters come at me with no door in a row. Since you can leave candy on the floor, I locked in to a routine of spam dropping candy on the floor where i left the gun right beneath the bowl to auto-reload. It felt very flow-state. I only lost when I accidentally domed a child with high-velocity sugar.

If I could give any criticism, I would say implement some new kinds of monster and trick-or-treaters so it's not as black or white what i'm about to deal with (the fake-out approaches made things more interesting, for example).

I hope you're able to turn this into a full-fledged game, if you ever plan on it!

Developer

Thak you for sharing your experience! I'm so glad that you enjoyed it, that's a pretty highscore, I got 213 so far. We didn't really have enough time for new monster, different type of monsters, and trick or treaters. Going forward I will try to make the monsters more similar to the kid counter parts so it's not so obvious. There could be a possible of releasing a full game but that's still in discussion.

Developer

Thanks a lot for the full detailed review! I am glad you liked it and felt this way. I really wasn't sure when making most of the mechanic and I wasn't sure if it would work in the end. New kinds of monster are in the making. We might finish this game and publish it. Your feedback are really appreciated!

Submitted(+1)

Cool game and concept! It was fun to play and I really enjoyed the sound design and art as well.

Developer (1 edit)

I really appreciate your comment, I had a hard but fun to make it, so I am happy it was woth it. This time it was Bird of Man who I worked it who made most of the art asset and music so he is the one to thank

Submitted(+1)

Really neat gameplay and I love the visuals! At some point I became paranoid and held the gun everytime I opened the door (and it was awesome). I don't know why the gun didn't always shoot, though. Also, I covered the floor with candies, because I could, so thanks for the possibility.

Developer (1 edit)

I am happy that you liked it and that you got immersed in the game. I think the gun always shoots if you always put candies in it but some monsters have more than one lives. Yeah I think it is an important thing to let people freely play with the environment. I played your game too and it is awesome
