I didn't play this at the time, but I felt like playing some games and came across this one, great job! I think you should've won

I really really enjoyed the game :) very nice job, congrats.

Great game. The pixel art here is awesome, I liked it. Also, the level design is pretty good and the puzzles are interesting. I was a bit confused by different floor colors, I felt like different floor tiles have different effects or something like that, but I guess they don't.

Submitted(+1)

It was great! Enjoyed it! Brute forced my way to the end. I thought the boxes were movable tho.

Yo’ Templar here,

  • Very fun take on the rewind theme, it can bring very fun puzzles.
  • Level design is superb, the way difficulty increases is perfect.
  • The art is really good.
  • Using different floor tiles in the same level is awkward.
Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I've had a few people mention the different floor tiles and I completely agree, so it's something I'm looking to change post-jam. It's just a matter of finding a different way to show hints without using differing tile sets, which is a problem I need to solve.

Very nice! I really loved it. I tried to make a tile-based puzzle game, too, but yours is so much better. I loved everything: the graphics really fit, the minimalistic art style and gentle music really contributed to the feel of the game; the game is a perfect lenght; the main mechanic of the game is simple and yet presents a lot of depth; and finally, the puzzle design is really on point.

I think the puzzle design really is the strong suit of the game. The difficulty curve is basically perfect, and each level made me think about which would be my next moves.

I think that the levels with 3 or 5 inputs being recorded were the easiest, as you can basically have only one input actually matter by walking back and forth to nullify two or four of the inputs. But this is not a problem; it would be perfect for a few easy levels in the beginning of a full game.

Really good job. Well done. One of my favourites from this jam for sure!

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you liked it!
The odd numbered steps levels are intended to have the one step forward effect, as I thought it made a nice tool for the player to learn and apply later. Unfortunately there's at least one level I didn't balance quite right and you can completely skip the intended path with it so it's definitley something I need to be careful with.

Wow...

The best thing about this one is how the game is so, so subtle with how it guides you through the levels, it's not explicit, it's leading you through a trial and error but with giving you very very subtle hints that you may not be even aware of. While it's just a small simple game, that's peak level design. Great feeling for the player, this is the feeling what people should always try to get. Standing ovation and hats off to you for that.

I found it kind of easier to go through odd-input levels, as you could go with little steps without considering the level layout that much, so I felt like I was kind of exploiting the game a little, but that was still very fun and don't get me wrong, some of the levels blocked this way of doing things halfway through leaving me with defunct strategy and having to adapt (which is awesome in it's own way!)

I am in no way fan of pixel art, but the art is really good and it serves it purpose really, really well, fits with everything and so on.

It started to feel a little bit tedious after a while, but the game ended before my attention started to drop, so that's great.

When considering jam environment, this is one close to perfect (not there yet, but very high all across the board).

I feel like I might be a little bit over-positive, but dang it, voting is subjective, and I just feel very positive about this one.

Great job, and one more time, hats off.
Keep designing games, please.

Developer

I'm glad you liked the subtle hints in the level design. It can be hard to balance that kind of thing so it's good to know I did it well.
The little steps with odd inputs is completly intended, and there's even a level designed around that concept, however there is another level that can be exploited which I had to patch for post-jam. It's something I want in the game, because it works as a nice tool, but I have to really be careful with it (and I wasn't quite careful enough with the jam version).
I also agree that the concept as it stands can't be stretched that far beyond the 10 levels, but hopefully the new level mechanics I've envisioned will vary it up if I implement them well.
I'm really happy you liked it, and thanks for playing!

The levels are really polished. The graphics are  very good and the music matches the atmosphere perfectly. Overall a very well executed game which leaves me with not much to say...

However, I will nitpick, because that's what we are here for :)

  • The obvious one is lack of menu or introduction, but I didn't really care so I won't say more about it.
  • I think that the different styles of floors didn't bring any value, and actually distracted me the first times because I wasn't sure if the "new" floor was safe. I would have kept the levels with one unique style each.
  • When "rewinding" against a wall, I would have loved a small animation letting me know the movement had "failed".

That's about it. Good job on your game, I really enjoyed it.

Developer(+1)

Nitpick away! These sort of comments are always helpful.

The lack of a menu was down to time, but it seems to be a heavily requested feature so I'm going to work on it for post-jam.

The different styles of floor has also been mentioned by a few people. I originally wanted to have different level "groups" each with its own floor tile set, but doing that with 10 levels seemed a bit pointless so I just chucked them all in. I'll probably still split them up as planned, however I'll need to come up with some alternate system of highlighting paths I want the user to pick up on.

No fail animation was another time thing, I originally wanted some sort of effect that would play when a rewinded move occured, with a variant for blocked movments, but I didn't consider it essential for the jam.

While we've seen the mechanic before, I think you do a great job at slowly ramping up the puzzles' difficulty. The music and sprite art work wonderfully. Great game overall.

While it may be argued, and some people have, that this game has similarities to the GTMK 2020 - Out Of Control game Jam, I think this game still fits with the theme, with the central rewind mechanic happening only once instead of fully losing all controls. So thematically, I think this is one of the more excellent ones with the core gameplay centering around the rewind theme. Here are a few other things I like:

1) Simple spritework! The character work kind of reminds me of the main character from Celeste. You are an amazing artist and have already earned my admiration with your beautiful execution here in this game. I think you have great art direction and even without a tutorial - you have great intentional design so things that I think will do what they do, do exactly what they do.

2) Much better difficulty curve (?). In contrast to other puzzle games that were made in this jam, many of them I find myself stuck very early on. In your game in particular, I felt like I was able to go through the levels much better (and also end up finishing the game!) with more flow.

This is good, particular attention into difficulty balancing allows players to better enjoy a game, especially in a jam setting.

EDIT: OOPS, my speaker was turned off so I heard nothing. I quickly booted up the game and toyed around and heard the sound FX/Music now. Just here to say it's pretty good!

Developer

I'm glad you liked the art! It was my first time creating my own art for a game, so the wonderful feedback I'm getting on it is really motivating. The design of the main character was definitely inspired by madeline, I wanted a character that looked more realistic than the more standard exaggerated proportions you often see on 16x16 characters.

You also might be the first one to pick up on the hidden tutorial as well. I don't particularly like tutorials in games, so I designed some of the levels specifically to teach mechanics.

Submitted(+1)

The mechanic isn't that original, still, this game has a very clean execution for it. The aesthetic and sound design is great. The levels are in varying quality because of the lack of testing I supposed, a great game nevertheless, well done.

Developer (1 edit)

Yeah, with GMTK having just happened there are tons of great games out there with similar ideas. Hopefully some of the additions I'm planning will help the game stand out a bit post-jam. Level design is fun but sometimes you can stare at obvious problems and not spot them! I've reworked the level you mentioned to pull it more in line with my original plan, it'll go up with the reworked version, thanks for pointing it out :).

Submitted(+1)

Absolutely amazing. I enjoyed it sooooooooooooo much. The animations and the pixel art was supreme I just loved the mechanics of the game. Some variation in the soundtrack and you are up for a full fledged release. It was awesome.

Could you please check out my game too? Its not as good as yours but still I request you to rate my game.

It's a perfect puzzle game already. I forgot that I'm playtesting a jam entry, I've felt like I'm playing an old classic DOS game. Great job, I don't have any negative comments for it.

Submitted(+1)

Graphics and color pallette were really good. Sound effects were nice. I like the idea but, i'm pretty sure i played exact same mechanic before in a game that i can't remember rn :P but yeah this mechanic is fits for this game. also level designs were pretty good, even level 3 is challenging. good job!

Got some strong "You are now Possessed"(overall winner of the GMTK jam) vibes from this one, don't really know if you took inspiration from it or not, but anyway this game is GREAT, and those similar mechanics work marvelously on both jam themes. The artwork was beautiful,  I liked the music, and level design felt amazing, must have taken a lot of tought/ test to make it work properly. One thing this game lacks however is a menu system, the game opens and already trows the player on level 1, and when you finish, the credits end and take you back to that place again :/.  Anyway that's a jam we are talking about and i'm pretty sure you just didn't have the time to do so, also that's a minor detail wich doesn't change the overall experience that I had. Congrats for making this one :D.

PS: It would be a really good addition if you add a level selection menu on post jam version!

Developer

Thanks! Inspiration was definitely taken from "You are now Possessed" though more in the way of presentation than the actual mechanic, which is from a platformer I was originally developing for the jam.  A menu system is on my todo list, it was just due to time that it didn't make it into the jam version. Hopefully I'll be able to get a level select working along with that.

Submitted(+1)

the mechanic of the puzzle is just so fun, great level desing, cute pixel art and the music fits well, would like to have some quick introduction to the overall game, i had a blast playing your game good job!

Submitted(+1)

Probably my favourite puzzle game of this jam, I love the main mechanic of this game so so much. Graphics and audio are really solid aswell. Audio settings would've been nice though, other than that, I have no criticism whatsoever, awesome game!

Developer

The game does actually have audio settings, I just never had time for a menu system so they're linked to hotkeys which I put on the Itch page. It's on my post-jam todolist! I'm glad you liked the game :).

Submitted(+1)

This is a top notch game! I love everything, the cute, simple art style, the puzzles, it's all very polished. There are also a lot of levels. Maybe some additional mechanics would be nice, and a proper menu, but other than that, great game. I had a lot of fun!
I also didn't find any bugs, which is nice. Well done!

Submitted(+1)

I really liked this game. it has nice graphics, and great music. Gameplay is creative and it's something I never played before :D

It's quite hard but I like it. The only thing I'd change is to make the tiles fit more each other. Right now some just look like they are blocking the path (when it isn't the case)

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

Quite a fun game, it was difficult to tell what tiles I could move to and which I couldn't on some of the levels and I got stuck at this level:

(Pic doesn't seem to load, but there were 5 actions and i'm not smart enough to figure it out :P)

That's more my lack of skill than anything and no fault in the game, really good fun and fits the theme quite nicely.  Bonus points for mute options.
