Great game i like the art

Developer

Thank you :)

The game is great and fun to play. Visuals are amazing! However, there is a small issue: some of the environment sprites (red carpet, walls, chest, etc.) have higher z-order than the player sprite. Overall, nice job!

Developer

Thanks!

Looks great! I like the old TV look, it seems to make the walls look more 3D/real. It might be a good idea to ramp the difficulty up a bit slower as I found the second room a bit tricky. Might just be me though. :-)

Thanks for playing! I really wanted to have an old tv look/arcade cabinet vibe so I'm glad that you like it.

I mean, it certainly lack a start menu, and a end screen, but otherwise the game is complete and polished in my opinion, very good job! It's impressive for a solo dev with limited time :o

Excellent Game, the idea really tied nicely with the theme and I really liked that you are getting better weapon each time you die, the bullets seems out of place with all the fantastic pixel art and the music was too loud and quite repetitive although it was pretty good, I really liked the game and it was super fun, good job!

Thanks for playing :)

One of the few games I've felt compelled to play through numerous lives! Enjoyable 2D shooter.

Really cool game.  Loved the art.   I agree with some others that the the bullets should despawn making it a little easier.  Overall great game!

Thanks for playing!

Super cool!!! I feel like adding lifetime to projectiles would be good, so they don't follow you for ever.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! The red bullets do have a life time but the yellow and blue ones dont.

Cool game! This was very similar to the first idea I had before I changed my mind so it was fun to see someone who had the same idea but followed through on it :). A pretty tough game but it was fun.  Great work!

Developer

Thank you! I wanted the game to be a bit challenging but still beatable lol. Also loved your game the two character mechanic is very clever.

Really cool art and sounds but the game is to hard.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I tried my best to mix difficulty and powerfulness in the game but I do agree that the game needs some tweaking.

Bullet hells aren't my genre but I still had a good time; enemy variety seems pretty important to this kind of game and Renatus delivers, with the enemies looking and feeling different and having different roles on their "team" against the player.

All the audio was there, and I enjoyed it; I do wish in an entry with so much of one act so fast (shooting in a bullet hell for example) that there was >1 piece of SFX for it.  pewpewpewpewPEWPEWPEWPEWPEW will be in my dreams tonight.

The core mechanic of "you get *significantly* better after each death, but you have finite lives" is awesome, I love a good 'shoot the moon' mechanic in games and this definitely fits the bill.  You can stay weak but preserve lives, or get risky but be as strong as you want, as fast as you want.  This is a much more fun way to allow a player to choose difficulty for themselves than, say, a menu setting!  However, I could not tell how you were supposed to know how many lives were remaining (except having played before).

This might just be that I'm not used to bullet hells, but I kept trying to get the environmental kitsch to do stuff.  Oh, a green carpet, I wonder what that does vs. a blue one!  Oh, an open chest, I wonder if that's got something in it for me?  Ultimately no, the game is you and the enemies - which is fine, but I wish I'd figured it out sooner!

Overall: easy to pick up and play, not so easy to beat.  That's how it's meant to be IMO!

Developer

Thank you for such a detailed response! I am really glad to hear you enjoyed playing my game! I really wanted to make a challenging bullet hell like game so I am very happy I nailed that part. I also really should have added a pause menu so that people can tweak the audio to their preferences but I got really burnt out towards the end of the game jam haha. As for the environment originally I had plans to add powerups/traps there but I had to crunch and decided that those needed to be cut out. Thanks again for playing really appreciate it!

This is a really fun game.  I was sad when I permanently died because I really wanted to see what the weapon upgrade would be!  It felt really good to get those upgrades, they made a huge difference...but got you one step closer to your end.  I really enjoyed the game concept and your execution was really good.  I like the in game instructions, though, somehow I missed the 'stand on the blue carpet' until I was in the first room walking all over wondering what to do.

Great submission and a lot of fun!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I tried my best to blend between risk/reward with the heart system but it might need some tweaking.

I had a lot of fun playing your game! The music complemented the gameplay very well and the controls were easy to use. I also really liked the way you included the theme in your game :)

Pretty fun bullet hell. The mechanic of dying making your weapon stronger worked well and gave some nice risk reward to the gameplay with being stronger but having a lot more risk of losing. In my first run through I struggled a bit since I was just aiming for the front liners and then in the second run through was way easier when I started targeting the back line first. Music complimented the game well and loved the addition of being able to fire at enemy bullets

Great, fun little bullet-hell / rogue-lite! Would agree with other commentators that music / SFX are a bit on the loud side.

Overall: good use of the theme, fun gameplay, and good looking graphics. Great job! (PS: the “burst fire” that you get when you have 2 or fewer hearts is a bit OP!)

Developer

Thanks for playing! I really should have added a pause menu but towards the end of the game jam I got so tired lol. Changing the volume is on my list of things to do. I agree with you about the burst it needs a little bit of fine tuning haha. I'll be sure to check out your game!
