Really liked the outlined comic / geometric art style!  Cool effects too!!  Great job!! :D

Very fun game, I wish there was a way to check my progress or my score.

Thank you for your kind words! ๐Ÿ˜Š Proper scoring and wave-counts are on my to-do list, after some serious optimization.

Nice and chill space journey !

I really like the overall tone of this entry, the 1bit black and white color makes everything clear and anderstandable easily from a gameplay perspective and from an art perspective i really like the ships design with the three canons and the abstract enemies which makes you feel like you're stranded into some unknown sector of space with strange phenomenons with those black hole looking ones and the cuboid thingies (the larger ones look real nice with that smooth animation)

Had a real good time and played for quite a bit, i don't know if it's endless or if there's an end to it as is but i was always curious to see what would come up next especially after what i suppose was a boss ?

The only tiny issue i'd say, it would be nice to have some powerups to change the players shots a bit for more variety.

Regardless, solid entry, cool art design and music, good job to you both :)

Thank you for your kind words. ๐Ÿ˜ I definitely had more planned, including an upgrade system based on collecting things like a typical danmaku, but I wanted to make sure we could get the game done on time.  I'm glad you enjoyed the otherworldly impression. I hope to iterate on this design soon, with various performance improvements.

No problem, 1 week is quite a tight deadline, so i perfectly understand ^^

Very cool art style and music. I like the visual feedback when the player gets hit. Very fun game. FPS felt a little slow though.

Developer

Resetting the game a few times can fix the speed.  Since then, many other programmers have been nice to share with me  some optimizations  I can include. Thank you for your kind words!

The Graphics and Style are delightfully weird - but the controlls feel a bit sluggish and I think I just got eaten by a 4-Dimensional Space Sphincter - how do I rate this?

Developer

Resetting the game makes it run faster... but I fear that's a memory leak issue.  ๐Ÿ˜… After making this project and talking to other devs, I have some ideas on how to  optimize it, which I'll try when I get some time after the jam. Thank you for your consideration!

With all this bullet hell mess I'm playing today, with huge EDM synth, heavy guitar riffs, hundreds of deadly bullets and sweaty hands, this one is a breath of fresh air. It's so... calming! The atmosphere is so unique I love it. It's not that difficult but it's challenging enough that it remains fun. I love the artstyle, the ship design is so cool and whatever the enemies are they blend super well with this universe. The sound is what hooked me, the music is really good, I'll have to check the musician's bandcamp :) It is appeasing but also makes me want to kill some geometric abominations x) The Sound Design is simple, but perfect. You did several variations of sounds like enemies blowing up, making them not annoying. The overall atmosphere is perfect, this game is simple, but great, you have my heart <3

Developer

Thank you for your kind words. ๐Ÿ˜Š I had worried that I missed the point of 'bullet hell', where this game starts with a dreamy aesthetic and slowly ramps up the challenge, so I am happy that it resonated with you.  The composer, Moult, also made their own rhythm matching game that you can find here:  https://moult.itch.io/caterwaul

Pretty nice game, looks good!

I played the web version since I'm on linux, and I think it either had a low FPS there, or I think the game would be more fun if it was faster.

Pretty straight-forward implementation of the theme, nice job!

Developer

Thank you for your kind words. ๐Ÿ˜Š One of the joys of a game jam is that the precise deadlines force us to finish a project, rather than dither around forever. Now that it's done, I have learned several ways to optimize the game, which I hope to implement in a future project.  (Sometimes, resetting the game several times can boost the speed, but I believe that's actually a memory leak and not proper caching, oops. ๐Ÿ˜…)

a delightfully surreal game.

Bravo, really nice work. I think this is the best submission I've seen for the challenge.

Out of curiousity, what kind of shader did you use for the twisted torus? I'd guess masking a wireframe effect with a texture, but that doesn't seem quite right.

Developer

The textured torus was a much larger resolution wireframe, rendered to grayscale. I increased the contrast to make it almost completely white. Then I surrounded it with a 1-pixel contour of black, twice. You can see this contour  if you  collide your ship to turn the  background  white.  (The background is actually white with alpha transparency, over a rectangle that gets changed from a black-to-black gradient to whiter colors when you get hit. )

I didn't use any shaders in this game. I'm still learning the code, and I was worried that writing everything to a surface, then writing the surface to the screen, would be yet another processing operation, and the game is already dropping frames! ๐Ÿ˜…

And thank you for your kind words. ๐Ÿ˜Š There's a lot of really good submissions, and it's great to see what people make! I am learning so much more about the danmaku genre.

(+1)

Ohh, that explains why the torii look different after collision!

I really appreciate the in-depth answer, and keep up the great work. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Could use a bit more polish, but it is very good as is

Developer

Thank you! Ugh, there was so much more I wanted to do: enemy pathing, proper boss fights, optimization, etc.  But just getting basic things to work was hard enough.

I really like that art.

Submitted(+1)

I feel like this does a lot with a little in terms of aesthetic. I really enjoyed the style and the audio was great too. The effects after getting hit once were cool as well.

Awesome little game! I love the art style and the sounds building up with time and changing after getting hit. Cool stuff!
