This is a lovely, chill version of Snake, with great graphics and sound. The clouds obscuring parts of the playing field—more and more so in later levels—is a nice touch.

I wasn’t entirely sure how the scoring works; it seems to be that the faster you get to the next coin, the more points it’s worth?

If I had one criticism of the visuals, it’s that the portal looks a little bit… Eye of Sauron.

Nice take on a classic, feels very polished

I liked this a lot! It is classic snake, but executed really well with a few twists. I think chaning the environment every 10 coints was great touch. It made me have a real sense of progression, and it kept the game interesting at the same time. I also liked how the game looked and sounded! The music was fitting and did not become annoying either. All-in-all a really nice experience. :D

My main point of feedback is that it is a bit slow in the beginning, but I guess this is a normal thing in snake. In the beginning there is not yet much challenge, because I move very slow, the level is not too complicated, and the dragon is still very short. I really enjoyed the later levels, when you have to think about where to move, and make sure your own body is not in the way. However, in the beginning these challenges are not yet there. Perhaps there could be a checkpoint system or something?

I was also wondering, does the dragon go faster as you get to later levels? I feel like when the dragon came out of the portal it got faster and faster, but when I pressed spacebar and released it again, the dragon returned to its normal speed. Maybe this is a bug? (I am not sure, haha)

This was a really solid entry! Great job! Especially if this is your first published game, then I think this is really promising! I hope you will participate in more game jams in the future ^_^

Developer

Thank you for the in depth review and the kind words.

Regarding the speed: I’ve added some additional debug output. If you go into the Options and press D the debug output is enabled. The 4 numbers in the top left are:

  • TL: Min number of ticks per move game setting
  • BL: Max number of ticks per move game setting
  • TR: Current number of unaccelerated ticks per move (changes with Wyrm length)
  • BR: Current number of ticks per move (accelerated or not)

On that options screen you can use [ / ] and { / } to adjust the two game settings. Try setting the max number of ticks per move (BL) to 15 for example.

Using these debug values, it looks to me like the acceleration with Wyrm length is working as expected, but I’d be interested to know if you’re seeing something different.

Soooo, I’ve been thinking about this a lot. You weren’t the only one to mention something like this, and now the game allows you to select to start at any level you’ve previously gotten to. I hope you like it :)

Very nice! Particularly liked being able to set my own difficulty - increasing the score if you get to the next gem quicker is a great touch, and led to me dying through greed on more than one occasion.

Visuals were great, with nicely done animation for clouds and gems that added interest to the screen as a whole but didn't distract from gameplay. Also really enjoyed the animation for the title bouncing in.

Delighted you added WASD as per your comments below - just feels so much more natural to me :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I’m really glad the addition of WASD has improved the game experience for players.

(I always try to review the games of people who review mine. The screenshots of yours look fantastic, but Mac OS Monterey tells me the downloaded app is damaged. I’m on a M1 Mac Pro, if that helps at all :( ).

Hi! Don't have a Mac to test on myself, but a  friend who uses one had to run the following command via the terminal to get it to run:

xattr -cr Descend.app

It's apparently a common issue due to apps needing to be signed and notarised in order to run on OSX without additional steps, which requires a paid subscription to Apple's developer program. No worries at all if you can't get it to run - appreciate that you tried :)

Developer(+1)

That worked! Weirdly the downloaded app didn’t give me the option to “open anyway” in the security settings, as it would normally if it was unsigned, just said it was damaged. Anyway, I’m certainly happy I got a chance to play it. Review incoming :)

Hey Marc, great first entry! It's clear that you polished this game very well and TBH I wouldn't be surprised to see something like this on a marketplace or as a mini game of bigger title. Art is great and cohesive, the color palette was well picked. Soundfx and music also perform very well with the rest of the game. One thing that bothered me a little bit was the parallax of the clouds, at times they would make hard to see the coins or the character, idk if this was the intention, to create this blind spots, but made me feel a little frustrated. Maybe the clouds could be beneath everything to give the idea of "above the clouds". Keep up with the great work, looking forward to seeing your next entry. Cheers!

Developer

Thanks, ak1r4.

The clouds are intentional. In the beginning they should hardly bother you but they will get thicker and more numerous as the game progresses. However, it is something I’d still like to tweak a bit more.

Unfortunately I cannot review your game in return, since I don’t have a Windows. From what I see of the screenshots/gifs it looks awesome. Lemme know if you bring it to Mac or web.

Nice music and nice art! The dragon felt a tad on the slow end even with accelerating but still fun concept. Good job!

Developer

Thanks!

How far did you get? The dragon gets faster the longer it gets, so by level 8 or so you find yourself wishing the acceleration was actually a brake :)

Nice art

The dragon is cute , my favorite is the relaxing music~ nice!

A very creative spin on the snake game!! I got to level 7 with 4123 points

I tried holding the button to speed up and it worked for me. The game has good mechanic and difficulty that ramp up well. I noticed that if you get coins faster, you get more points. This created a little challenge where you have to use the game border to teleport around the map quickly, I like it.

I prefer moving with WASD so it would be cool if you add it too. I also find the music to be a little too repetitive, especially the drum and the chord, would be nice if it has more variety.

I hope this comment help, cheers :)

Funny you should say that. I just added (unreleased) WASD support this weekend along with controller support. I need to do a little more testing, but it should be out this week.

Yeah. I’m not great at music but learning. I agree with this completely. Press M to disable the music and listen to your favorite stream :)

I just deployed support for WASD or a game controller :)

Very fun reimagining of snake! Good Job!

A really cute and relaxing game! I really enjoyed all of the visuals, well done.

Really well made but I think the snake could move more fluidly such that it is more akin to traditional snake as it will feel more responsive.

nice take on a classic :)

however, what i really don't like are games that auto-start when opening the page...

Developer

Thanks!

If you don’t mind telling me, what don’t you like about the “auto-start”? This doesn’t really “auto-start” as such, but “auto-download”, but I get what you’re saying.

Fun play on a classic! I like the visuals and music!

This is so well polished, especially for a first game! The art is wonderful. I love the little details, such as the transparent clouds and the wind wisps. I found it a little slow (I tried it in the browser and then downloaded the Windows version but didn't really notice any difference) but still well done on making a really interesting version of Snake.

Developer

Thanks, Mandy. The game intentionally starts off slow, but if you hold a key (any key, really, but I usually use the one in the direction I’m going), it will accelerate the Wyrm. And, of course, it gets faster the longer you get. Let me know if knowing that changes the way you think about it.

Submitted

I did hold the key down. It was still slow. I watched your video and it's faster than it was on my machine whether I played in the browser or the Windows version. However the computer has since had a reboot forced by loadshedding so I went back to the Windows version and the speed is fine now. So it is not liking my computer when I have a lot of other resources open/running/in use; however, other games are still able to run fine when that is the case.

Liked the art work!!  Really fun take on snake -fun and challenging!   Great job! :D

Developer(+1)

Thanks you! I’m glad you liked it. How far did you get?

Submitted(+1)

Sorry I don't remember exactly -played so many games that day!  -just went back and played it again and this time only made it to level 3 -would have kept going but starting over from level 1 every time -takes too long to get back to making progress.   Would be nice if there were extra lives before a game over -still had fun though -great job on this!

At first I thought the game was quite boring because the dragon was so slow but when I realized it would go faster if I hold down the keys it became a lot more fun :)

Developer

Thanks for the review! I’m glad you enjoyed it.

The Wyrm also gets faster the longer it gets. By level 8 or so you’re probably wishing that that acceleration was a brake instead :)

Very interesting take on snake
