What an interesting idea. I included it in my Fuck Capitalism Jam compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :)
Thank you so much! Appreciate you giving these games some coverage!
Really cool concept, aside from the fact I can't envision a CEO getting "into the weeds" at the same level we do here LOL
Message is loud and clear here. I loved how unlocking ultra processed food was practically printing money.
We all know CEOs are the most valuable members of every company, often 600+ times more important! The best way to illustrate that is by making you do absolutely everything in game.
Ultra-processed, water rights, and
redactedall end up basically being cheat codes. I was going to balance that out in the last update but some feed back from yo252yo, changed my mind since it helps highlight the ethical decisions. I'm plotting a future update that will curb some of that, but glad you enjoyed it!Thank you for the kind words!
Hey wow! That's a very nice game you made here, good work to all the team! It's also nice to see fellow Godot users <3 It's such a great engine. I really liked the game's idea, graphics, and the UI. The journal titles made me laugh, especially the "Rage bait" XD.
I lost the first time because I was only investing in sustainable projects and putting dividends to the bare minimum. I wonder if we can win this way (as a CEO), mhhh :P I also never took any loans. I don't like giving banks or investors extras when I can avoid it :P.
I wanted to try a new game because it took me a while to realize that there were multiple project sheets, so I hadn't created new labs during the first try. But the thing is, on the HTML version, the saves are bugging. I had the "you lost" message popping up all the time after my first try, even when I deleted the previous save/named the new one differently, deactivated autosave, etc. So in the end, I couldn't play again XD because even when closing the message, the game buttons were unresponsive.
Also, it's a minor "bug", but when you are, for instance, checking credits or whatever, and return to the menu window, the music restarts every time. I think it would be nicer, as a polish, to have the music continue without interruption.
It seems you've created music for the game! That's neat! It goes very well with the game. I think a longer playlist would be appreciated since it becomes repetitive (but thankfully you guys thought of adding the possibility to turn it off, yay!). I understand that it's a lot of work for the music creator(s) if you want to keep it exclusive to your game.
Anway, I really enjoyed it, congrats <3 I'll keep an eye on the project for the future updates :3
Thank you so much for the kind words. It is always cool to see Godot in use! I really appreciate the compliment on the Newspaper, it's a minor detail, but it's great to hear someone paying attention to that stuff and enjoying it.
You absolute monster, depriving shareholders of dividends and banks of their interest! It's fitting that you'd lose, using such barbaric tactics.
In regards to music there are actually 4 tracks, each unlocks as you unlock more "evil" options. Unfortunately with the time allotted we just weren't able to get more tracks, but that would've been awesome, as I really enjoy E-Mertz's (our composer) work. I also wanted to add in the feature to let people cycle through the tracks but was having problems getting it to work properly. I'll keep that on the potential list though.
1. In regards to not being able to restart have your tried FireFox or Chorome? I just tested it on both browsers and cannot repeat that bug. Not being able to load a save that you lose on is a known issue that I just haven't resolved yet, but I'm definitely concerned about it getting stuck in a lose state, I haven't seen or heard of that yet! Any additional information you can provide would be super helpful.
2. Thank you for pointing out the music restarting/overlapping... I thought I fixed that a while ago, I'm going to have to dig back into that.
I'm using Firefox >:3 I've tried again and couldn't create the bug again, but I also lost differently (I think). If that helps, the first time I got the bug, it was because my investors (I guess?) had made me resign.
If I notice anything else I will make sure to tell you :3
Good luck with the fixes and good job again :D!
The contrast between the cutesy everything and the down to earth, realistic mercantile activities is really interesting, even more so by how in your face it is when basically the first interaction with your assistant has a blunt "We're here for the money" message.
The sheer amount of numbers and complexity really conveys a sense of "This is capitalism, kid!" that is reinforced yet again by the juxtaposition with the pastel, chill vibes. Imagine if you had to tackle real life politics in Animal Crossing!
I would've liked some more sounds here and there to improve the gamefeel and the game's complexity and interaction wasn't really my style, but I applaud that you manage to create such a composite system that doesn't break in just 4 clicks, congratulations!
Animal Crossing Capitalist Horrors... I'm getting on the phone with Nintendo right now to see if we can make it happen! I really do think my teammates did a great job of making my interactive spreadsheet come to life and I appreciate the kind words!
If you have any specific suggestions for where we could add more sound, send em! I'm more than happy to flesh it out a bit more, I'm just not very good at identifying things like that.
Thanks for trying it out and offering your feedback, even though the game isn't your speed. I hope you had some fun with it.
I like the juxtaposition: a charming vibe with cute characters, and operating a business and dealing with serious and harmful practices. I'm allergic to spreadsheets, so the game was kinda tricky to figure out. I kinda sorta lost the game almost immediately, so I'm not sure how that happened. I think I'll need to play the game a few more times to understand more of the mechanics, but I really do like all the board member details (all too true, I imagine), the innocently described horrible business actions, (surely the experimental fertilizer is fine?) and the aloof "everything is fine from where I'm sitting, I'm just making money" energy throughout.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoy the juxtaposition and details about the board members. I really think my teammates did a great job at bringing my interactive spreadsheet to life!
If you lost quickly, it was likely due to running out of money. Losing by Board Member votes should take quite a bit longer. I think (with the current balance) taking out the largest loan you can before the end of quarter 3 helps a lot. Additionally, you cannot ignore research, it's the key to a long run! There are a couple of broken solutions to make it essentially impossible to lose by running out of money, but I won't spoil the secret (unless you ask).
If you give it another run or have any questions let me know! I may also release an update to fix the Help button sometime soon, if that's helpful.
I just released an update that fixes the Help button, if you're interested in trying it out again (with some more assistance).
Really like all the concept and presentation!Your team have managed to present the idea very well in the game.
Maybe I've gotten a little lost with some terms because my low level english, and I'm sorry about the help button problem, i'll follow you , for if in some moment, you make another release and I'll try again the game ^^
Thank you for the feedback and kind words.
I do plan on releasing an update that fixes the Help button/dialogue system once the voting period is over!
I just uploaded an update to fix the Help and Dialogue system, if you're interested in trying it again. Thank you again for reporting the issue!
One of these days I might have to take the time to make the game translatable. Unfortunately I didn't set any of the interface up for it, but the dialogue could probably be translated relatively easily. If you give it another chance, I hope the Help button works, but if you have any questions or need tips feel free to ask me!
Very good and very polished game!
The complexity of the sheets and constant decision making made me feel soulless and capitalisty :)
Good job and I appreciate the effort put into this one!
Thank you for the feedback.
I'm glad we could make you feel like a soulless capitalist, it really is the best feeling in the world. I hope your future digital museum will charge premium prices and hire executives based purely on nepotism!
of course, and we hope to use your software to run things around!
The characters are cute, sadly the help button doesn't work and also the assistant is on repeat.
I still don't fully understand business 100% but this seems pretty spot on from the things I hear!
Thank you for the feedback! It turns out I completely broke the dialogue system (which the help button is tied to) on the release version and I didn't even realize it.
Basic business: get customers hooked (addictive elements encouraged), cut costs as much as possible, rise prices as high as possible, pass all costs on to the consumer, accept no blame, hire a good accountant and lawyer, Nepotism is the only acceptable ism... There's some other bits, but those should get you pointed in the right direction!
I just uploaded an update to fix the Help and Dialogue system, if you're interested in trying it again. Thank you again for reporting the issue!
So now the assistant shouldn't be on repeat (for the most part, there are scenarios where Ermine doesn't have anything to say), and there's a little help for the business side.
its pretty hard to figure out everything but once you get going this game is very nice. it really shows how hard it is to care about the environment when youre constantly fighting with the board for your survival and privatizing water is so profitable ^^
Thank you for the comment!
I broke the Help button/dialogue on the release version and didn't realize it, so you all are getting thrown in the deep-end without much assistance. I also think Water might be a bit too powerful, as I didn't get to do the final balancing tweaks I wanted to.
i mean it is powerful but its also very obvious that its ethically wrong so i think it works for the bottom line
I just uploaded an update to fix the Help and Dialogue system, if you're interested in trying it again. Thank you again for reporting the issue!
I also changed the balance up a bit including making Water and Ultra Processed research a bit more expensive. They're still kind of cheat codes. I was going to make it to the player had to work for them, but your words about it being "obviously ethically wrong ... it works" stuck with me and I decided to keep it attainable from the start, at least for now, so thank you for that!
It was a good exercise, thank you for helping me getting my MBA, I'm ready to work at my dad's company (he's the CEO). 5/5
No problem that is an accredited MBA, so if you run into any issues you tell them to call Classy Kraken Studios and we’ll get it sorted out. Our team of real human lawyers are standing by!
We fully support nepotism and congratulate you on successfully being born into an advantageous position!
This was great! Very seductive numbers-go-up game. I wasn’t entirely sure why I lost in the end, but I was focussing too much on getting those greedy directors their dividends, so maybe it was the population and environmental health factors…
It took me a while to realise that the directors could actually be praised/bribed and that would have some effect on the game. But that was a nice realisation that the game had that extra bit more depth.
Thank you so much for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed your time with the game!
If you lost from Strike by the Board Members it may have been that you were focusing too much on “Altruistic” research options, especially if you were regularly bumping up the dividend.
Yeah, it’s a bummer the HELP button isn’t working since that could’ve led you to the Bribe/Praise earlier. I’m going to have to figure that issue out!
i had a lot of fun playing this!!
my only real note is that i missed some things for most of my first playthrough (like the 'next' button or that the research page has tabs). while this can 100% be attributed to the fact that i can be ridiculously oblivious at times (a fact that has been scientifically proven), a more detailed tutorial would have been helpful! not sure if the information wasn't there or if i encountered a bug (the 'help' button didn't work and the assistant never moved past their initial dialogue--which i also couldn't close haha), but yeah would have been cool to have it :)
So glad you had fun!
I definitely need to look into the Help button, very disappointed that isn’t working for folks. There is a downloadable manual as well, so if you venture back into the game maybe check that out.
When you tried to close the dialogue did it pull up a newspaper? Hopefully, so otherwise I might’ve uploaded an old version of the game!
i was able to see the newspaper using a button to open/close it, but it defaulted back to dialogue after.
i'll check out the manual and give it another go! thank you :)
I just uploaded an update to fix the Help and Dialogue system, if you're interested in trying it again. Thank you again for reporting the issue!
I made it so the newspaper opens on the Quarterly Round up screen and the dialogue opens on any other screen. You can still cycle between the two, but I did not come up with a solution for minimizing/closing them. The idea is on my possibilities list though!
Wow, this is really, really good. It has a nice gameplay loop, and feels appropriately eerie and depressing, while also addicting to see number go up, helplessly accepting your position and starting to enjoy number going up.
If there is one thing I would criticise, it's that I was perfectly able to invest heavily into sustainable things and employee benefits, all while having absurdly high benefits of over 35% for a ridiculous amount of time. I think what would give this more of an edge would be to include rival companies that basically force you to truly optimize your growth instead of just growing, as is the dynamic within capitalism.
Also - the help butten never worked for me, unsure if it's not properly implemented or something went wrong on my end. It was also hard to understand sometimes, what makes the board happy - and it's regrettable a member of the board will never change their opinion once you reach full strikes on them (at least from what I could see), even as I stuffed their fat faces with dividends and profits.
Oh, and the aesthetics were also great, big props to everyone involved!
In summary - I love it, easy 5/5
Thank you so much for the kind words and feedback!
The balance is definitely off, I had to travel and uploaded an old file to my laptop, so lost my week of balance and refinement! I’ll keep your feedback in mind if we do future updates!
I’m going to have to troubleshoot the HELP button. If you don’t mind me asking what OS did you play on and did you play in browser or download?
Ah, I feel you on that, losing progress is so easy to happen and frustrating as all hell.
I was playing the web version in Firefox on Linux (Manjaro KDE), so, could be something with the compatibility there. Will try the downloaded version too, later, to see if the bug persists.
I just uploaded an update to fix the Help and Dialogue system, if you're interested in trying it again. Thank you again for reporting the issue!
I also couldn’t get the HELP button to do anything. On Windows 10, in the (Chrome) browser.
