This is awesome. Love the graphics, the colours, and it's all just super cute. Great work and congrats on one of the top ranked. Would love to see more levels! Played for the GitHub Game Off live stream: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1712660556

Hallo,

Thank you for sharing your game. I’ve already saved its RATING;

1. verified: GAME due to observed SUBMISSIONS List with keyphrase: noticeable pixel drawing technique, with noticeable GAMEPLAY for verification based on screenshots

2. observed: noticeable background musical tune and sound effects; remembers: select SteamPowered modernized RETRO games, e.g. Shovel Knight Treasure Trove

3. observed: noticeable use of pixel drawing and animation techniques

4. verified: GAMEPLAY to be of arriving at destination, where: path has enemy monsters that need to be defeated; remembers: from the left to right horizontal scrolling movement, computer programming techniques, e.g. containers classified to be arrays, linked lists; adds: COMMANDS appear as CARDS, e.g. shield for defend, bow and arrow for ranged attack,

5. observed: SHIELD CARD to be the MOST EFFECTIVE; opted: NOT to use the support cards, e.g. decrease/increase attack, reshuffle cards, due to movement to reach END appeared to cause the QUICK WIN, where: use SHIELD CARD if available, if not, verify available movement counts to not stop @BOMB, immediately use BOW when path has no enemy monster, except the incoming one after movement, et cetera; notes: upgrade, e.g. hit all in path using upgraded bow, in exchange for COINS exists; admits: however, computed OUTPUT from exchange of damage based on SWORD ATTACK, NOT noticeably CLEAR for self

6. shares: the following screenshot, where: it appeared OUTPUT shall be LOSE; keyphrase: system

7. finished: GAME to receive 「おめでとう!!」; notes: nihongo and English languages to be selectable as part of the settings;

Thank you. Health!

I got to play this before the ratings even started. This was a cool game. I like the mechanics. The graphics go well with the music. The animations fit in well to. Very well done!

This game is unique, simple, and quite engaging. It took me a bit to figure out the strategy. I still was only able to get to area 4 after playing for a while. This game strikes a very cool balance between simplicity and complexity. Planning is important here.

The graphics and audio are very fitting.  As others have mentioned, this would play incredibly well on mobile given the simplicity of the controls. This is definitely one of the most unique and interesting games I've played this jam. Great work.

Developer

Thank you!! I'm glad you appreciate the balance between simplicity and complexity.

This game rocks!

I recorded myself playing the game: https://youtu.be/NzGXPs9vWew

A few random thoughts:

  • The graphics are sweet. I adore the style.

  • The music feels a little bit repetitive after 20+ minutes. Maybe a variety could help here. The music track does fit the game, but in the case like this there should be more than one music track I think.

  • The interactive tutorial is great. Although I had difficulties understanding the movement/slash damage before it was explained at level 2.

  • And even after slashing was explained, it was hard to calculate the effects. It’s some math you have to do in your head every time. “So I more 2 steps, then I have 4, so I can kill hp=3 and do 1 more step”, it gets a little bit tedious at some point. Sometimes I made mistakes due to the off-by-one errors.

  • One solution to the issue above is to show the effect visually. Display how much health enemies would have after all the calculations (0 if they’re gonna die after that). You did a lot of these in the game: you display the position, the attack ranges, etc - it is a great help! It would be even cooler to incorporate slashing hints into that.

  • With more cards and more levels (and procedural generation?) this game could be a good candidate for a steam game. As some other people said, I would consider buying a game like this. The idea and core mechanics are good.

  • My English is not good enough to comment on that, but I’m almost sure some text could use some proof-reading. That is something to consider before publishing this game on steam. For a game jam it doesn’t really matter. :D

  • I would enjoy an endless mode with a highscores screen in the end (when you’re defeated). :D

  • After you start to understand the mechanics, you become much better at playing it. This is a great sign: there is something to master in this game.

I shared this game with my friend. He did like the game just like I did. :D

Loved the art and the concept. I kinda want this as a mobile game on my phone, I would totally buy that!

Developer

Thank you! I thought this game could be implemented on mobile. If I have enough time, I'll try to release for mobile.

really good, I love this simple but addictive game. The art, the music, the gameplay, I like it all. And also, it is not a just go forward, after level 3 you really need to think about your next move.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I like the game design that easy to play but need to think.

Loved it so much I couldn't stop playing! Thankfully it has an end point, otherwise I don't when I would've stopped ^ ^' Definitely my favorite game of the jam so far!

Only thing I think I would advise is to explain sooner what happens when you play an action that has more steps than free ones on the map until the next enemy. At first I couldn't understand why I sometimes killed the enemies and where I moved but after the second tutorial I got it, I just think it should be explained a bit sooner.

おめでとう!!

Thanks for playing and leaving an advice!
I had a very difficult time to think the timing of teaching the game rule. I thought that the player couldn't understand the rule if all rules were taught early. I'd like to keep thinking better tutorial :)

I love the old-school JRPG style art and SFX. Really cool little game and the crossbow upgrade was super satisfying to use
