Great game! But I would have really loved it if there was background music

Hello! 5/5 on the visuals. Hands down the best in the jam iv'e seen so far. I loved the ships. Although I could instantly tell they were from Kenny. The sound was awesome but it was a little off without any background music.

Overall I really liked this game. I gave it one of the highest rating I have given in this jam. It's very good and polished and the enemy's were great. I could barely find anything bad about this game!

Nice clean space war game, thanks.

A really nicely done space shooter, there's definitely more in it that last I tried it almost a month ago!

For anybody that is looking at giving it a go I'd recommend turning up the difficulty. Hard is definitely the most fun, but I can't last very long!

Developer

Thanks for the lovely comments everyone! I will check out all of ya games today or tomorrow :-) Haven't had a lot of time these days to play & rate stuff :-)

And thanks for all the feedback, much appreciated! :-)

Will have to wait till tomorrow, got home late today :-)

This is super well done! I only lasted 7:10 on easy, definitely challenging for me. Though I'm sure I'd get better at it with a bit more practice. :)

I don't think I have any criticisms, sorry. ;) Loved the camera movement when you kill an enemy.

One of my favorites so far.

Great game loop! Satisfying effects when blowing up enemies and the little rest periods between waves were nice. I would've like it to get more difficult sooner as it was too easy for me and I ended up quitting at 10 minutes into a game because it hadn't seemed to get harder for a good while.

Nice work, this was fun to play (even on a trackpad!).

This was super fun to play :) I really enjoyed the feel, look and sound of it all. It would be awesome with some extra feedback sounds for when the player takes damage, something like: a sound for shield damage, a sound for hull damage, a sound for shield depletion, and one for shield regeneration.
And even though I think the slow increase in difficulty is very well done, I truly miss more challenging gameplay.  I went 12 minutes without dying, and then suicided because I found it a little too easy for my taste. Some ideas for making it slightly harder could be: spawning more asteroids, and decreasing the player's shield amount.
If you end up with a game loop, where the difficulty gets super intense within no more than 5 minutes, that would definitely make me want to replay the game and try to beat my highscore :)
But all in all, very well done - this was awesome!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it :-) It definitely needs more sfx yeah.

I didn't get to balancing the higher difficulties (medium and hard) a lot. Easy could also use a bit of work, but it is more of an easy introduction to the gameplay :-)

Medium and hard is basically the same, didn't adjust many properties on hard.

But I'm glad you liked it anyways :-)

Simple, quick fun. I liked. I won’t repeat the feedback others gave you. I play a few shmups (shoot’em ups - that’s the genre it falls into) and they are sometimes faster paced. The trade off is that it’s hard to keep up. Maybe experiment with making things faster and slower to see if it make it more exciting. In any case, good work!

Glad you liked it, thanks for the feedback :-)

Instant fun I loved it.

I liked this game very much! It is fun, fast, polished, it has nice visuals and quality of life touches (I couldn't stress enough how the bars showing from where enemies and asteroids are coming is a good thing)! Excellent!

Keep up the great work!

Nice entry man, really polished and completed within the project's scope. The movement also felt very smooth. I usually don't like this type of game but this one felt very juicy and tight, so it was quite a good experience.

I loved the hit feedback, made it a lot more juicy. I just hoped the same was done with the collectables. There was no sfx or vfx that showed me something happened. I also really liked the asteroids idea, hoped it'd hit the enemies too (makes sense right?)... would have made it even more fun.  :|

You did really well expanding the game that the course taught though!

Developer (5 edits) (+1)

Thanks for playing, glad you liked it! :-)

There is a sfx when picking up powerups, just not health pickups. But yeah, some vfx and maybe a slight screen shake would have made it even better :-) When you pickup powerups though, it gets added to the active powerups UI below the vitals UI :-)

I wanted enemies to be able to get hit by asteroids, but was unsure if I should do it or not.

Tbh I was 100% on my own on this game, I didn't watch the Laser Defender section, I have actually barely watched the course :-D I only used kenney's assets due to the lack of skills in art, but I have years of C# programming experience though :-)

Thanks again for playing, and feedback :-)

Oh I did not hear it. Yea some vfx (particles maybe?) would've been great, but that's something you can add latter to make it juicier! (I think screen shake is not so good when picking up collectables though).

I like the idea about hitting them too, adds a variety and it's a good/bad thing when they come. You have to pay attentioon to them, but also means that the enemies will be more vunerable too. But who am I to say haha, just an oppinion.

Whaaaat?! That's even better than! You did a really good job on the game, had a lot of fun with it and it feels polished.

Yea, making it on your own it's really hard but rewarding. I did that on mine too. There are a lot of things we whish to add or to do differently huh?

Like I said, you did great! o/

Definitely, I just wish I had more experience with art so I could make something more unique.

" Like I said, you did great! o/"

Thanks, you too. Really impressed with yours, I could see myself playing it again if you decide to make it even more complete than it already is (I saw you mentioned that you were thinking about doing it) :-)

Ooh, just try it! I had no experience with art/pixel art before this jam. It's a matter of try, error, redo, improve. Using references and taking some basic courses helps A LOT!  I'll probably do an article requested by Yang Pulse about how I did it and if you are interested check it out! Maybe you can get something from it. :)

Thanks buddy, that's really cool to hear! I'll certainly do, already planning a checkpoint and some other updates! o/

That's awesome, I might just do that. I did have a few attempts a long time ago, but I stopped all of the sudden. I want to get started again, because I really want to learn, and hopefully keep doing it without stopping  :-) I do have experience with basic 3D art, but my desire lies mostly with 2D :-)

I'm very interested. Where are you going to post the article? :-)

Hey I really liked this!  I recognize Kenny's space ships (Laser Defender!). Great work making a well paced short game with some persistence between play through (upgrading ships). The latter is something I really dig in games.

Great job on this and I did get to see a bit of your development following the discord chat :)

Submitted(+1)

I played one of your earlier version and the final release is very great, you had applied amazingly well the feedback and the controls are very good and the feeling of piloting the spaceship is very fun.

The visuals are great and liked a lot the explosions effects, though a background music would be awesome.

One of the best submissions I have played so far and a lot of work behind this title!

Regards.

Watched this on Discord,

Well what a really polished game, great attention to detail, nice title screen, It was easy to to jump right in and play

Would still like to see space bar for fire as well has mouse down, but being picky!

Well done.

Amazing game! My only problem was the audio, which kind of hurt my hearing.

Developer(+1)

Sorry about that, I wanted some lower pitched sfx but I used bfxr to generate the shooting, powerup, and explosion sfx, so they had that distortion, and high pitched sound :-) Don't know if I could change the pitch in bfxr, didn't understand most of the settings :-P

(+1)

Nice job! Everything about the game was very satisfying. I especially appreciated the liberal use of screen shake. Overall, one of the best shmup type games I've played for the jam!

Submitted(+1)

I really liked the game. I don't know how well it fits the theme and I am not a fan of the sound effects. Still I couldn't stopped playing, I enjoyed a lot. Good entry!!

Developer(+1)

I wish I could have gotten better sfx, but I had a hard time finding something. So I just went with using Bfxr for the gameplay sounds.

It is just a basic take on the theme "Survive for as long as you can" game, which is time based :-)

But I'm glad you enjoyed it :-)

I followed your progress on Discord and have to say that good job on this one! Although I am not the biggest fan of asteroids style games, but this was quite well done! :) One mechanic I would love to see would be a over heating system, so that you couldn't just keep pressing the mouse button for the whole game. Adding that would obviously mean that you would have to probably slow the enemies down a bit to make it more balanced again. But just a suggestion, good job on this game! :)

Developer

Thanks glad you like it :-) I like the overheating suggestion, I will add it to the ideas list and develop the game further when I get to it :-)
