Yaaaarrrrr, what a funny game! I was destroying ships and chasing gold conis like a maniac!

I really liked the management side of the ships with all the powerups and the weight system.

Awesome!!

Nice game! Fun all the way to the end.

My potato struggled running it at my native resolution (I should have dropped my desktop res to 1080p) but the input lag was fine. Maybe the tank controls could use a lil bit of tweaking but I understand how tough they are to make perfect. And plus hey it's ships we're piloting after all so they definitely shouldn't turn on a sixpence!

The capacity mechanic is really clever - having three dimensions to it is very cool. I'm definitely going to incorporate it in another game I'm prototyping (2.5D space shooter)

I really liked this one, one of the best I've played on the jam.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback. We didn't get time to implement resolution options, but that is definitely something we'd add when we know how to.

Yes, the capacity mechanic is definitely our favourite one. Fitted in with the theme well, with the gold weighing your ship down.

Good luck on your 2.5D space shooter!

Very good game, although not as frenetic as in the gif hehe. At first I used a controller and was a bit confused until I noticed the mouse position was used to aim. My suggestion would be that using the right analog stick to do that should be an option as well. The UI element showing your bounty kind of gets in the way, obstructing a good portion of the view.

Anyway, I had quite some fun with this one. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Absolutely. We never tested with the controller, so unfortunately we missed it. Just noticed that most of it worked already, except for the aiming with the mouse.

We thought it was cool and thematic having the wanted poster there with the bounty. However it could definitely be made more minimal.

Thanks for the rating and feedback!

Really well done game, easily one of my favorite this jam!

Submitted(+1)

Awesome game!!! The controls were a bit disturbing at the beginning, but I got used to it and actually I think it made the game more rewarding to play. The upgrades are a bit op, but I like the system and it can be fine tuned any time. Well done guys! I wanted to stop playing after two rounds of upgrades, but I could not and played it to the end. :D

Developer

Thank you for the feedback and rating! We hope the controls did not disturb your mind too much. :)

This is a great game that feels good to play! Having the gold, damage, and cannon be the effective health is also a very neat idea. The combat reminds me slightly of the naval battle in Sid Meier's Pirate. I also find the control to feel very nice and tight. With more features (level progression and some stories for example) this can certainly be an actual 'shipped' game :D !

Great submission!

Developer

We have plans to develop this into a more complete game, taking everyone's feedback into consideration. Thankyou for playing and for your kind words!

Submitted(+1)

A very polished game with complete and engaging gameplay.

I would only think about a more diverse soundtrack. And certainly for a longer game you should start adding variety at some point.

I like stories, so I would also like to see some plot or a larger goal that I am supposed to pursue, but not necessarily everyone needs it.

All of the above does not change the fact that it is a fantastic piece of code :)

Developer(+1)

Thanks Sly! We had unrealized story goals for sure. First time doing a game jam and I wasted a lot of time on some overly complex features that didn't even make it into the game :( We have plans to continue development on a project similar to this, with a full story. Stay tuned! :D

Submitted(+1)

Cool, I followed your profile so I will be waiting for updates :)

Submitted(+1)

Wow, definitely a top entry for me! The music and art created a really cool mood. I LOVE that health was tied to your gold and cannonballs, encouraging you to upgrade your ship at every stop and potentially skipping picking up gold so you could hold more bilge water. I do wish you could turn back to the last port. I ran out of cannonballs and had to sprint through a bunch of ships to get to the next port.

Overall, I could see myself playing this again!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and so glad to hear you enjoyed it! Part of the reason we prevented players from going backwards was to make the choice between risking picking up gold or forgoing it more meaningful - which probably would have come through more clearly if the game were longer.

This looks really well made! But the controls are an absolute game killer for me. If W is always going to be forward, why not make the world be vertical and scroll up? I understand wanting to use tank controls for a boat, but it just felt really bad to control. The combat was really satisfying when I could hit things. And your 'health' being your ship taking on more water instead of gold was a really cool idea.

Overall, you knocked it out of the park on this game. Well done!

Developer(+1)

Even if this had been a vertical scroller, the boat can still turn, and you have the same issue. There are other solutions, like having the keys map to absolute direction, but that loses a lot of the flavor of controlling a ship (turning, trying to keep enemies abeam, etc.). Alternatively you could have the camera attached and rotating with the ship, but then it wouldn't be a scrolling shooter.

The only other good option I can think of would have the vertical axis control the set of the sail (Furling/Unfurling) and the horizontal axis the wheel, but we didn't have time to get to this.

Thanks for playing!

FUN! best pirate game I have played on here.

Couple of minor things (well one really), could you add an indication as to the edge of the world and a reason you can't go back (rolling fog maybe?) it was just a bit jarring hitting the colliders if you turned around or went down to far.

Otherwise great job!

Developer(+1)

Good ideas, I wish I had thought of them. I guess I just figured if it's good enough for Mario, good enough for us. But that kind of thinking is not how we move forward.  Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

This is really exceptionably good. I didnt have time to see bugs was having too much fun hahaha. An idea maybe. Thought while i was playing that a blcoking feature will be a really cool addon, something like in the assassins creed where you hold shift i think to reduce amount of damage taken from impacts and rams. Not that you need it but if you plan on building on this further... Excellent work.

Submitted(+1)

Love the art work and the gameplay! I agree with the other commenters that it took a little bit to get use to the controls but once I did I had tons of fun!

Developer

Thankyou for playing, glad you enjoyed it :)

Submitted(+2)

A lot of fun :),

It took me a bit to get more used to the controls, I was often turning the wrong way still towards the end :P.
Once i'd figured out what the cargo hold display was telling me, and remembered to buy a lot more cannonballs :D, then i was doing better.
The BIG thing missing, is a finish screen. When you reach the end, the final port and sign is nice, but even a simple UI pop up at the end saying how much gold overall claimed etc, maybe a shot accuracy percentage, Water pumped, some fun stat like that, would help to give a bit more feeling of being finished and achievement,.. i felt a little robbed of that at the end.
But that winge aside, it was a very fun game to play!
Great job to the whole team.

Developer(+1)

We had all kinds of plans we could have implemented with a few more days. Such is the nature of a jam :)

Secret story tidbit: We had planned to have the final area be a chocolate coin producing factory! Would have tied the whole thing together. Oh well.

Thanks for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Very intuitive, I love the controls and playstyle are great :)

Good job!

Submitted(+1)

Really enjoyed this one, with a few more small features to keep the player engaged longer I could see easily playing this thing for hours when you are bored and killing time. Its calming and fun. Gameplay feels really great. Awesome Work.

If you do another update, would you care for a Linux build, please?

Developer(+1)

We have an issue with our sound plugin that may be fixable. If we can get it working, I'll let you know when the build goes up.

Developer(+1)

We've just added a Linux build!

Submitted (1 edit)

The merchant window worked better, and the graphics seemed to have more details as well (courtesy to the better graphics of the Linux machine). Unfortunately sound didn't work...

Developer

Ah, I'll see if our sound guy has any thoughts, but no one on the team is on Linux so we have no way to test ourselves. If we can spot the problem and get it fixed, we will. Thanks

Submitted

It should be easy to just pop in a Live distro USB stick and just boot from that for a test-run. Maybe you've got an older machine still around that you don't use anymore? But my guess is has as much to do with me not being able to build the project due to the missing Wwise parts, so it's quite possible sound is missing because of that...

I don't know what alternatives there would be and how difficult it would be to overhaul the whole sound system in your game, but it's something you might want to keep in mind for your next project...

Developer(+1)

We think we might have it fixed, if you wanna give it another try, somehow the aforementioned WWise parts did not get into the build.

Submitted(+1)

Yes, that did it!

The only thing you might adjust with the next release (if there's another update to the game) would be the folder name of "Linux Build" inside the archive ;)

Submitted(+1)

Quite interesting gameplay and controls. It feels weird to have to move up to go to the right but at the same time they work very fine. Quite a refined gameplay. Well done

Really cool game! Great job!

Unfortunately, the menu pops up at the first port, but I could not interact to buy upgrades. I tried different times but always stacked in there :(.

In any case, I really enjoyed the game :)

Developer

Thank you for the feedback. Are you playing above 1080p? If so there should be a fix coming, that solves that.

Developer

This issue should be fixed now if you download the latest build! Sorry, I never thought to test resolutions above 1080p! Even though I myself am on 1440p monitor!!! Let me know if you continue to have issues.

Submitted(+1)

Confirmed, it is fixed, thank you!! Finisced and mastered :P!

Submitted

I had some issues with the port's merchant menu as well. I was plying on a 1366x768 screen size...

Submitted(+1)

I like it!!  Good work!  I really liked the cannon balls physics!  This is a game to expand to multiplayer.
