The presentation on this game is fantastic, and I was really impressed with the intro & ending cutscenes!

I would say that the ship could do with having its base movement speed increased slightly, as at first I thought I needed to hold down the left mouse button to move.  However, it did help to sell the feeling of the ship being a large capital ship rather than a fighter, so I can see why you went with it - I think maybe it just needed more of a visual indication of movement, such as more of a thruster effect from the engines.

The combat was well done, I liked the more hands-off approach of the guns auto-firing - great job!

The combat was really nice, forcing the player to use positioning to his advantage, and letting the virtual crew do the shooting.

The final boss was a bit annoying, as I had to basically ram into it to make any weapon fire at it; I'm guessing it has a tiny hitbox as an oversight?

Maneuvering the ship around was fun. Combat was a bit stale and rockets seemed mostly useless, since they were extremely slow and didn't even seem to deal that much damage when they did connect. Also good job on the visuals, especially the cutscene.

pretty cool!I never played those slower tactical space battle sims, but now I have :-) thank you!
once the fuel runs out,it get's pretty tough - though I guess that's part of the challenge.

The visuals are just amazing! Great job!

Wow, the presentation of this game is stunning - visuals, UI, sound, and the intro cutscene! It was great fun but unfortunately I died against the big boss. Was there something I missed regarding fuel? I often found myself with no fuel and no purple asteroids nearby. But overall I had great fun, well done and congrats on the submission 😎

Developer

Yeah the ship wrecks and pink asteroids restore fuel, otherwise you just have to conserve it for the boss if you can't find any of those pickups.

Once you figure out that the combat is mostly automated it’s a great experience.

I died once on Normal, then cleared it on Normal, then cleared Insane. I think the Broadside guns are ridiculously powerful and they trivialized the majority of the game, but the positional requirement makes them a little tough to use. I really liked this ship maneuverability approach to combat and wish there was more of it.

Music and presentation in general is stellar, tee hee. Some audio peaking happens in the voice clips, but the fact that you even have polished cutscenes is something to be proud of for a ten day jam.

Fuel droughts were hardly fun and it exacerbates my biggest issue with the movement system: I wish the ship had more inertia. It should take a lot of fuel to start boosting, and then take an equal amount of fuel to stop; instead, the ship feels like it somehow has wind drag and stops dead in its tracks any time I stop moving. But… not being able to stop fully made relays a little harder to standby in.

I’m being very critical but I enjoyed my time with this game and think it’s one of the strongest entries I’ve played. Great work!

All hail linoox, no problems to report with this version of the game.

thanks for the feedback, and testing on linooooooox! yeah some improvements would definitely be made to ship movement speed and boost behavior in the future

The main thing this game still could have would be some training field so one can get used to the controls and stuff.

And it would be nice if it kept the difficulty level and audio settings across restarts.

But then, it has very polished graphics, intro and finishing animation sequences (withc voice-overs) and a compelling gameplay.

The first to attempts I got evaporated in less then 20 seconds but the third time I was more lucky in how it started. Neither mine field nor some attacking enemies in the immediate vicinity and when I made the first enemy contact I had gotten some feeling for the controls already.

The key thing is to lock down and click with the right button whenever there are enemies nearby in order to aim at them...

When the ship enters the jump gate, the switch between the game and the animation sequence is a bit sudden, the music breaks of just in the middle of a beat. Probably all it needs would be fading out the music while some "jump gate is charging up" sound that leads into the animation sequence plays...

I finally found your game, Avocado Fire! ^-^

I asked on stream, but my message got lost in the many comments. There is a really impressive amount of polish here. Between the cutscenes, the voice overs, and the beautiful environment. It's nice and cinematic and definitely draws you in. My one critique would be that I felt like my ship was moving really slowly, even with the boost. I also could have used a bit more tutorial when I got in, but I figured out the controls after a little while. In my first run, I thought when I ran out of fuel that it was game over, and I was sort of frustrated because I felt like I couldn't find fuel before that happens, and that the fuel runs out so quickly. In my second game, I understood that you are not actually stuck if you run out of fuel, you just can't boost. And that you don't have to use fuel constantly. And I was able to beat the game so  I think the balance is pretty good.

Nice work!

An impressive feat for the 10 day period! Unfortunately, the text that says to collect meteors and such goes by a little to fast for me, and it is difficult to know how to play without seeing it. But after learning how to play it is good. Great job!

Developer

thanks for the feedback, yeah I should have made the popup messages last a little longer so people have more time to read the hints

I would love to play it... if there was a Linux version I could use...

Developer

Hey heckert, yeah I'm looking into packaging for linux. I need some software installed to do so in unreal, but I'll keep you posted!

Took me a while to get around to this but it's very ambitious! Cutscene and solid gameplay. Great modelling. Plays well and it was satisfying to shoot the missiles at the big ships. Engine sounds peaked the volume a bit in a uncomfortable way and I think some more chill music would be better. All around this is really impressive for 10 days. Great team effort!

Developer

Thank you!

Developer

Hmm, good to know. I also noticed some of the sounds were "too loud" at times. I'll adjust the volume on some of them individually.

Awesome, standing ovations over here :) Great cinematic qualities and background story. I was pretty confused about the battles at first, who is firing on who and why that enemy ship exploded without me doing anything specific.

Thanks! And thank you for your feedback!

Visuals are amazing and gamerplay looks awesome. The cinematics is really awesome. Great game.
