How does your game fit the theme?
You can't control when to swap powers. It swaps after some time or when hurt. There is a bug making the game harder than it should be. Please read the description in the game page :)

This was really fun. I dig the music and I thought there was a really solid variety of game mechanics. Even though I didn't always have the ideal weapon - the weapons still worked - which was nice. I'd love to play a larger, fleshed out version. Congrats on submitting and thanks again for the play/review. :)
Glad you liked it! Pro tip: If you like one the weapons more than others, you can skip the other pickups, so you stay with your favorite weapon. ;) Though you have to stick with the first weapon until you take the one you like. If you like speed running, I recommend taking spike imunity, then jet pack. :)
The game was fun, but I sometime got stuck without a double-jump / float bonus in some areas that obviously need these features.
Thanks for the feedback! All 6 forms have a platforming ability: Elec has double jump, Bomb is immune to spikes, Jet can dash in 8 directions, Boomerang jumps high, Magnet can stick to walls and wall jump and Laser has infinite flight.
I just checked, finished the game once with each ability, just to be sure...
Other than that, maybe you died and lost the abilities... That is a bug, it's mentioned in the game page... I fixed it just after the jam locked entries :(
Loved the pixel art and Good music!
Thank you!
Dude sweet. Awesome litlle Metroidvania :D
How did you do the water in the background? Looks gorgeous
Thank you very much!
For the water, effect first I pick a bunch of random points on the water area, and copy the color on the opposite side (same X coordinate), with twice the height (Y coodinate). Indicated by the red lines.
Then instead of drawing points, I draw a line that keeps growing and shinking like a sine wave (green). Something like "width=sin(time)*5".
After that i'ts just making them move horizontally to make it less static and make the "closer" waves wider than the "further" ones to give a little sense of depth.
Hope this helps :)
Aaah I see. That's really clever
Thank you for the thorough explanation with a screenshot and everything
Definitely gonna use this at some point :)
Very complete game, nice level scale, great art style, diverse monster.
Pretty good work!!
Thank you very much!
Incredible game! Very impressive. Reasonably tough as well, but that's probably partly because I tend to get greedy and try to rush.
Yeah, it's a bit tough for a jam game. Lots of mechanics to learn in a very short level :P
Thanks for playing!
I'm super impressed that you made all of this during the jam! I'm looking forward to finishing the game when that bug gets worked out.
Thank you very much! I'll release a new version with bug fixes and extra levels as soon as I can :)
Hey! We uploaded a new version without the bugs. :) Also, we are working on a longer version of the game, and will probably launch it next week, if you are interested.
Great aesthetics and fun to play! Is this being entered into the lo-res game jam too, or is it too hi-res for that (64x64px)? I think it may be a bit big...
Anyway, I'm always impressed by how great a good artist can make things look even when they consist of so few pixels.
Ahhh... I just looked up what Pico8 is! I get it. Yeah, it's a bit big for the lo-res jam, but I'm intrigued by the Pico8 design limitations!
Pico-8's resolution is 128x128. It's perfect for small projects like jam games :)
I loved the art and music in this game, and think the concept is great. I think the level design could be edited a bit as there were some places were it was impossible to avoid taking damage which felt frustrating.
Did you get the power-ups? If you die once, the power-up pickups stop spawning and you have to reset the game :/
It's a bug, I fixed it just after the jam was locked :(
All 6 power-ups will help you with platforming, with double jumps, flight, etc.
Thanks for playing and giving feedback! :)
It is possible to go through every room with each available power up. The only way you could have unavoidable damage is if you dont take any of the special abilities.
Very well made game and great art.
Thank you!
Haven't played much pico8 stuff; this *looks* incredible. Sounds good too. I had some issues with the control but it was mostly due to the keyboard controls. Nice submission!
You can use a controller too! Just plug and play :)
I have problems with keyboard too, it only accepts some inputs at once depending on the keys. Laptops are especially bad with this :p
Thanks for playing!
ok the pixel art here might be some of the best i've seen both in this jam and in the pico 8 format as a whole. I'm particularly impressed with the atmosphere you got going with those limited colors.
The gameplay is neat but it could use some more health drops or checkpoints, as I found myself doing bits of it over and over. Still, lovely work!
Thank you very much! Yeah, there's a bug that prevents health drops and power ups from respawning when you die... I fixed just a few minutes after the Jam locked :(
The only way to make them respawn is to reset the game... The weapon pickups give you 1 hp too
I agree the learning curve is a bit steep for a jam game.. Thanks for the feedback :)
Hey! Level designer here. Yes, I misplaced the last checkpoint, so it wasn't working (it should have been AFTER the spike/beam section, and not before). Still, good to know I'm not the only one that played it until the end haha. Hope you had a good time playing it :)
Good job!
Thanks!
This is really polished and fun! I can't even tell its a pico8 game :O Would feel right at home on the gba!
Thank you very much! The trick was to reduce colors to only shades of green, grey and orange, so I had less colors, but more shades for each color :)
Thanks for the tip, I will try to play around with the palette sometime as well 😊
Very well done graphics and sound/music! The gameplay isn't particularly innovative though, but overall it is very well done!
Thanks for playing!
Really enjoyable game, very well designed, and an interesting game mechanic. With some more time I think it could be a really interesting project longer term. Good job!
Thank you very much! I'll work on a post-jam version later on with more levels :)
First off it looks and sounds fantastic. It's all the more impressive you managed this in Pico-8! I made my game in it and mine looks like an Atari 2600 game.
I like the reroll mechanic on getting hit which leads to sometimes taking tactical damage being the best course of action. Pretty hard game though.
Yeah, there is a bug that when you die, all power ups and health pickups are gone in the next lifes. You have to reset to make them respawn again.
Thanks!
This is a very difficult game, with very good art! The music and sfx was spot on too! Although I liked the idea of swapping powers as out of control, I think the game itself should fit the theme even more, by bending its core concepts! A valiant effort, and an outstanding piece of work, well done!
the more I rate these the more I start to feel like a schoolteacher my god XD
I made the swapping mechanic as a small thing with big implications. The gameplay completely changes with each power, not just the attack but also the movement.
Thanks for the feedback! :)
