It's a fun little game. This was a clever way to take the theme, and the introduction of the enemies using random rolling only complimented it. I just wish it wasn't so short, but it's a good game for the little it's got.
Clearly this is the greatest game of the game jam. It’s right there in the title!
The concept is really interesting, and I could see a really compelling game with more levels and mechanics. Along the lines of the extra dice power-up, you could give power-ups that let you roll multiple dice and choose them, upgrade a D6 to a D8, give your “bad” rolls to enemies, etc.
Presentation-wise, it could definitely stand to have more juice. Sound effects would obviously be great, as well as extra effects when taking damage, rolling your dice, and moving around. Only so much you can fit into 48 hours, of course.
I do like the progression as you go, especially the “tutorial” level that just lets you move around based on your actions. I do think it’s a little easy to miss the main mechanic here though, especially since there isn’t an animation or indication when your turn starts. If there was a short die-rolling animation before you get your number, it would be really easy to see “ah, a new turn is starting, and I’m getting my number of actions randomly” and ease into the harder levels more smoothly.
Congrats on making this in 48 hours, especially since it appears to be your first jam game (or at least your first game on Itch). Hope you get the most out of it and make an even better game next time.
Cheers!
I realized that the number of actions and turns wasn't quite clear. I put a small delay in there to make it a bit more obvious, but It really needs an animation. Same with some movement and especially attack animations as it doesn't really show anything happening.
I really like the power up idea and I might try to introduce dice that have special effects if a certain number is rolled or maybe get more actions if you get a pair.
One small correction. I am The Greatest and this is my game (The Greatest's Game). Not that this game is the greatest game of the game jam, because I've played some pretty good ones. Thanks for the advice, it is good to know some of the main things that need to be improved upon.
Well done! I like that you could strategically skip your turn or move away to force enemies to spend their actions just moving towards you and you could maximize damage. Obviously would've been awesome to see you expand on it as I think you can get a lot out of this. Great job though!
Dandy game and good creativity.
Hear me out if it's a cringe opinion, but I don't think this is the greatest GMTK 2022 GameJam Game.
You misread it. I am The Greatest and this is my game, i.e. The Greatest's game. It is definitely not the greatest GMTK 2022 GameJam game. It is more a prototype and I wouldn't even call it the greatest prototype (though it is The Greatest's prototype).
Lol
Lol
Overall a really solid concept for a very fun strategy game! I encourage you to pursue this further as I think this has a lot of potential
Decent game and good creativity.
Wish to add more different levels.
A cool idea that forces you to think on the fly--most strategy games focus on planning far ahead. If you had more actions you could perform, those sort of random possibilities would really open up!
I am split between more actions that would increase the number of strategies, but also the complexity to play it vs leaving the actions simple, but making more complex levels with more risk/reward involved (i.e. turns/actions taken could become important so you have to try to press through it.)
A very good game, very short tho. Hope more contant will be added and you won't drop the project, it has a lot of potential
I like the concept.
Nice idea ! Good job !
The game was so short! It felt like just when I was getting the hang of it it was over! Definitely more content would have made this game so much better. Despite that, I enjoyed the main mechanics, and found the concept quite interesting. I think it's also worth noting that informing the player that they could skip their moves would have probably been important earlier on as I kept moving back and forth to use them up.
I really hope everyone saying "more levels" is giving you high ratings because this is a game jam submission and of course there is not enough time to design a bunch of levels. The concept is great, it's fun and interesting. My only critique is that I wish the font was something a more retro, it really would have tied everything together. Again, I'm sure you just ran out of time like I did with my submission but credit where credit is due great job.
I didn't think much about the text, but more retro would definitely go with the rest of style.
And for all the people saying "more levels", it is greatly appreciated. I wasn't sure if it would be enough to show the hook and have people interested in it, so it is good to hear that people want more.
Cool concept, but it would be better if it was a little bit longer
Interesting and tricky game!
For first time it's really not bad! Good luck dude
Cute game. I see it more of a prototype, I would have really loved to see more levels, types of enemies and a more polished presentation, cuz I think it can really be fun, but alas, the time in a gamejam is so short. I really think this concept can work well on a mobile game since all the actions needed to do is to move. I tried to run through the game avoiding all enemies and I managed to make it with 0 scratches till the end :-) It felt good. The following run I tried to attack the enemies. I think it would have made the game more interesting if you knew how many actions the enemies had before you could move. It could add an interesting twist on strategy, similar to how "Into the breach" works. But still really nice concept and I really like the art choice!
I was hoping someone would try to play with the mechanics and go with a pacifistic run through. I've never done anything mobile, but I see how it would work well there. I thought about letting you know the enemy number of actions, but never got a chance to implement it. I think it would make it a bit more strategic while also still having the random chance between turns. Would have to play test it.
good
i think this game is a nice little prototype for a full game. It is a bit short, a few more levels would have been good. A really good idea for a turn based dice rpg.
This was a cool concept! I wish there was more levels though
