The game is a nice casual experience, I love the simple tween animations for the sprites and the mechanic of random(?) sprites, where the BaeRats have different features and colors. But yeah, like others mentioned, I was wondering the purpose of selling the rats, since it didn't hamper my cheese collection speed.
I completely understand how time is a difficult factor to work with in game jams. I also ended up not having enough time than I would've liked this game jam with many unexpecting things coming up so I fully get your stresses. Awesome to you that you managed to pump out something despite all the hardships!
Really nice Concept of having a Breeding Simulator and combining different traits. It's not really my type of Game but it does what it needs to do. Love the Monopoly Board for Breeding LOL
A fun idle game, genre isn’t my cup of tea usually but it was fun for what it is. Being able to see all the different combinations was fun. It does struggle to get across the theme a little, would have been cool for more chaotic concepts for the baerat designs and behaviours, but I understand time constraints hampered that. Strong potential though, I’d love to see more of the original vision added if you’re interested in continuing it.
For me, It does help a lot in terms of stress to know that you are working on a game that is technically “finished” (you can beat it) and you are just improving the game rather than working on something that is not completable. Because of that, I probably would have focused on adding things like score or a simple win screen before moving on to more polish focused tasks. But it's important to follow what suits you for game jams.
Thank you for commenting. I'm aware of the bug, it's actually one of my biggest regrets that I couldn't fix it in time, as it is essentially game breaking. As far as you can even consider what I made a game that is. I always intended it to be more of a sandbox, though you are probably right that for a game jam, something with a clear objective would have made more sense.
Ah yes. Selling starving babies for cheese.
Cute little idle game, with nicely drawn sprites. The artstyle is crisp and neat.
I do understand that there were a lot of cut content due to time constraints, but I do wish there is at least some simple elements of danger or urgency (the theme is chaos after all) .
Maybe just some simple timer and highscore system with how many baerats you are able to foster up, or randomly appearing broken planks that baerats can fall through unless they are dragged away, and player can fix the planks by holding the mouse button.
The breeding and mixing of traits from parents is a really cool idea, if theres any intention of expanding this game post-jam, maybe try having roles for baerats? Like how some baerats can collect cheese while other fixes holes, then you can mix them to get either a stacked role, or a new role altogether.
Not quite roles, but I did originally intend to have both physical and gameplay related characteristics changed through breeding, and get increasingly crazy with each subsequent generation (to the point where you'd have weird, lovecraftian baerats with spider legs running around, and things like that). So for example, one baerat might be very speedy, causing it to pick up more cheese, but also making it burn through its hunger bar faster. But yeah, I had to cut like 90% of what I planned. Not sure yet if I'll pick it up again. Thanks for the comment!
