Did you work in a team?
Flew this one solo. Creating a pocket-sized Wizardry-type game was definitely a fun experience. :)

Was the resolution a challenge?
The main hurdle was getting all the HUD info on the screen without dropping back to that horrid "tiny" font. Decided that i was going to go with an Apple ][+ style font and build the rest to fit the font size instead of the other way around.

What did you learn?
I wanted to see what I could do in that kind of space. I learned a lot from several people in the AppGameKit community that were also creating entries. So many clever solutions to space problems!

A big thing I learned here was that I was better at managing time and scope than I thought. It definitely gives me more confidence in tackling much larger programs and delivering on time/to spec.

This brought me back to the days of wizardry and Whale's Voyage and other similar games... I really need to dig one of those out again..... :) Good job I got lost and couldn't finish but it was still a lot of fun.

The presantation is insanely good and really takes me back to the very first computer RPGs. It's all in the little touches like the intro sequence and the OW when you walk into a wall! :)

Developer

thank you very much! That intro was a nod to Wizardry Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord. :-)

Very nostalgic indeed, really enjoyed this one, and it makes me look forward to creating my first dungeon crawler.

Developer

cool! If you end up making a retro a Dungeon Crawler drop me a message. I'd love to play it.

Very fun game, it was a great simple RPG,

I liked this a lot.  Especially the rat man.  Good job.

Awesome gameplay! Really nice idea. I do like the fake 3D dungeon crawlers of old. I'm a big rogue-like fan after all.

I noticed however you're not snapped to a grid (sub pixels), your intro animation rotated the wand and it was super smooth.

Developer

The rest of the game is snapped to the grid, but yeah that intro wand is a rotating sprite at the full screen res

Developer

Y'know, that wand not adhering to the 64x64 scheme bothered me enough that I went back and removed it. :)

I found this incredibly enjoyable. Maybe even this year's winner? :P

You've been talking about a full-fledged RPG for a while now. Make one in this style and get G3 to do it with you.... slacker!   j/k! But seriously, you got this. Make the damn game and put it on Steam or something.  I'm going to go back to finding that Alchemy Lab.

Developer(+1)

I'm going to... eventually.  :D     And that lab is in the upper right. ;)

Cannot go more classic than this… I loved the detail you can bang your head on the walls :P

Hey! This is cool! Love the old-school vibes! Love how much space you gave for the text :). Please check out our game: https://itch.io/jam/lowrezjam-2020/rate/732044

I appreciate the feelings of nostalgia I had playing this from the ultra classic low resolution graphics and difficult to navigate maze. Saying this, it was is so easy to get lost. I think some variation on the walls or some visual clues to help find your way around would help that.

Developer

I think you're right. While some enjoy mapping the dungeon, an option to make the dungeon a bit easier to navigate (minimap maybe?) might be something to consider for the next iteration of this. Thanks for the feedback!

not as a criticism but rather as a compliment: a good example of a game that doesn't need top notch art to be a fun experience.

Developer

Thank you!

Fun game. I never managed to play the Wizardry games, but it definitely reminded me of Akalabeth (although much better looking). I didn't pull out graph paper, but I did get very close.

Still looking for my brother. Wish I had a map.

Developer

When you find the note that says "Join me, brother," you are almost there ;)

Sweet. Reminded me of playing Monster Maze on the ZX81.

Developer(+1)

with the trex!! I forgot about that one! Tyty

You must be as old as me then 😂

This was a really cool game. Thank you so much for making it. Very limited in scope and I like how you can accidentally bonk on the walls if you're just running out of control. That legit got a laugh out of me. Also somewhat ominous. Felt somewhat like an old text adventure game but with a little more graphics.  Great job on this one I am glad to see this style of game is in the jam!

Developer(+1)

I love that it's hitting that Nostalgia point with people. That's what I was shooting for and it makes me so happy that people are enjoying that. Thanks for the playing and posting!

Submitted(+1)

Not an original request but I would have liked a map :-)

anyway game's simple and cool at the same time - and fun. A lot of reminiscence here. Congratulations

Developer(+1)

seems pretty unanimous that this needs a map. :-) thanks for the feedback!

Submitted(+1)

I really liked the graphics! It definitely felt like I was moving through corridors. As others have said, some sort of map would be nice, because I felt like I was horribly lost :P but other than that, it was fun to play!

Cool game. Great maneuvering game jam's of the resolution stipulation.

Developer

Thanks!
