Did you work in a team?
We were a team of 6:

Armen and Unsey = Development
Romaselli = Graphics and UI
Ondjon and Kssio = Music and SFX
Henzoid = Game lore

Was the resolution a challenge?
Yes. Fitting all the UI needed for a turn based RPG battle in the 64 pixels, without it becoming overwhelming and taking the entire screen was definitely a daunting task!

What did you learn?
Ro Maselli: Most of our team had no prior experience with Godot. I ended up loving it, especially the UI and map editing tools!

Ondjon: We wanted to strike a chord between the music and visual esthetic. So we decided to go for a blend between chiptune and orchestral, which was a challenge in of it self. I'm happy with the result and learned a lot.

Kssio: I had quite a challenge creating old school chip SFXs (that sound good) and running through chiptune instruments with my teammate Ondjon. First time working with these kind of sounds and vibes.

You managed to pack a lot into a small package, both in terms of gameplay and the UI. Congrats!

Neat game. There have been a few tactics entries but this one feels the most polished. The UI is great, and I like the sprites and the music. It's a very nostalgic feeling. I'm going to play this one a bunch.

The game is really polished and the music sounds great.  The rules for the game could be made a bit clearer.  I like the recruit mechanic and the level design is good.  A few nitpicks.  I think it would be better if you could select the order in which your characters take their actions.  Also, I would prefer viewing the map before placing your troops.  Again, these are minor nitpicks.  Also, are the characters you recruit procedurally generated, or hand crafted?

Developer

Thanks! The characters are generated from a set of parameters, given names and stats specific to their level and class. I agree that it's a bit odd that you have to place your team, then check map, then place team again if you want to switch strategies, something to consider next time!

Wow, this is superb!! I greatly enjoyed this! It took me a bit to learn, but as I did I really got in the groove of it. Great work!

You really nailed the UI for the resolution. Clean, clear, and doesn't take the whole screen. Nice job.

Turn-based tactics games are not my cup of tea. Still, this game looks real good and feels so polished that it's hard to believe it's a jam game. Nice work!

Loving it. Beautiful artwork for 64x64. UI is slick and clean. Music is great and fits well, SFX too. I really like the recruit mechanic - I haven't played a tactics game with this feature before. Some small niggles (e.g. not seeing bowshots land, shortest path sometimes has surprising results) which I thought were minor enough not to spoil my enjoyment and I'm certain they would have been ironed out with a little more time. All hail!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! The TO-DO list was still long after the jam ended, and your concerns would have been addressed if there had been time... we still might!

This game is super cool. I've been wanting to do a tactics game like this for a while -- just never found a jam theme that let it fit in very well. The audio and art fit together very well, and the simple UI looks and works nicely. I wish that the camera followed ranged attacks a little more so I could see what happens.

This game is hard... I found it super hard. Balancing attacking without killing and recruiting proved quite difficult. After getting stuck on the second level for a while, I realized that level 2 is impossible if you don't recruit one of the archers from level 1. But once I got the hang of it, it flows pretty well. I got my butt kicked by this game. No idea how much story you ended up fitting in here -- I got to the underground, but couldn't get much further. A really cool entry, though -- only tactics game I've played in this jam so far.

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! The camera following ranged attacks was definitely on our todo list, but we ran out of time! :(

About the difficulty, you really need to keep recruiting people in every level in order to have a team capable of taking on the next! If you fail to recruit at least a couple of people in each level, I would recommend retrying that level, even if you've cleared it. You're pretty much guaranteed to get rekt on levels 5-7 if you haven't built a solid team by then. There is however an exploit that you can use to save yourself If you haven't built a strong enough team and you got far: If you recruit someone and then you end up failing that level, you still get to use the recruited person in your retry.

I absolutely loved this one. You guys managed to fit a turn based RPG in such a small space without making it feel suffocating (are you god himself???), with graphics to die for and great music to compliment it, to boot! Great work guys!

Submitted(+3)

I love it! Amazing game, guys! :)

Excellent job!

Thanks!

I like this game, I try to make game like this.

Wow I think this is the highest I rated yet :) Awesome game, surprisingly well done. It has enough depth to play for quite some time, and even develop some strategy.

The only downside I can find is that it’s hard to know what’s going on at first, like how to end your turn, and what actions you can make, and where are all the enemies in the map, what’s their range, etc. But it’s understandable, given the 64x64 limitation and the time limit.

All in all really impressive job! :D 5/5

Developer

Thank you so much!

These are some valid concerns. We talked a lot about what could've been better when we were play-testing before launch. You touch upon many of the things that we would have loved to implement!

Thanks you so much for your kind rating and comment :D

This was very impressive. Despite my inexperience with tactics games i managed to jump in well!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the comment! The mechanics are rather simplified in order to not be overwhelming with the small size, so I suppose it's actually a good introduction point for people with little to no experience with the genre :)

Submitted(+2)

Really good job, dude. I love tactics games and you did it very well.

You got the concept and ideal enviroment... and the "Recruit" mechanic was spice! It remembered me Pokémon. Hahaha

Congratulations!

Developer(+1)

Pokemon and Persona were the inspiration for that! :D

These tactics games are not really my thing, but I got into this pretty quickly.

The interface is really simple and easy to use, all the information I needed was right there on screen when I needed it.  The music was good, and the art had real character.

It's a really solid implementation and really impressive work in a short jam!

Developer

I think it's the best compliment ever to hear from someone who's not normally into the genre that they liked the game anyway!! <3

This game is great! I’m a sucker for these kind of tactics games, and you nailed it.

Music was solid too

Developer

Thank you so much Cody, your entry is also amazing!!

Great job! This felt well-made and cohesive. I appreciated the chests strewn about with upgrades in them. I'm pretty terrible at strategy games, so I didn't get all that far, but I had fun playing it.

Submitted(+2)

The music, UI and graphics are all very good.

I enjoyed playing it.

:)

Developer

Thank you so much, really appreciate it!

The units graphic is so good and on point! The controls are good but I was a little lost on the beggining.

Very good job :D!
