Did you work in a team?
Flew this one solo. Creating a pocket-sized Wizardry-type game was definitely a fun experience. :)

Was the resolution a challenge?
The main hurdle was getting all the HUD info on the screen without dropping back to that horrid "tiny" font. Decided that i was going to go with an Apple ][+ style font and build the rest to fit the font size instead of the other way around.

What did you learn?
I wanted to see what I could do in that kind of space. I learned a lot from several people in the AppGameKit community that were also creating entries. So many clever solutions to space problems!

A big thing I learned here was that I was better at managing time and scope than I thought. It definitely gives me more confidence in tackling much larger programs and delivering on time/to spec.

Great job!

LOL running into the walls hurt me, I love it. Fun game! I like how clearly everything is communicated (what’s going on, which buttons I can press at any time, etc). I’ll have to come back and beat this sometime!

Awesome throwback to old school dungeon crawlers - simple, but engaging and effective. Tried to wing it and fumble my way through, but nope, had to go old school with it myself and started mapping it out :) Very enjoyable and nostalgia inducing.

This is a very fun retro dungeon crawler. The movement and combat commands are perfect. Once your stats get buffed enough, some of the numbers overlap in the HUD but it's still easy enough to see them. It took me a while to get to the end. After a while I ended up only using freeze as it one-hit killed almost everything. I would love to see this game expanded upon. It was truly fantastic and well rounded. Nicely done!

I absolutely love retro games and retro-styled games alike! This was a great game that was a lot of fun to play. The psuedo 3d was done nicely and the gameplay was good. I would appreciate some more strategy, even a basic rock paper scissor (type advantage like pokemon) could fit well into this adding more strategy and fun in my opinion. However, it was still regardless a great entry to the jam. I really liked the humor, such as bumping into a wall and some "OW" text popped up. Also, I think there was a bug when you battled a spider for instance and after the battle if you pressed W again, you would encounter another enemy all the time if you continued pressing W after each battle making it super easy to level up and such. But the game was great and I even saved it to my collection because it's cool. Good job!

If you want, please check out my submission.

I had to break out a pen and paper to map this out, which is exactly how it would have been done in the old days. Great job!

The graphics are a great homage, and the text is really clear and stylish, well worth the time you put into it.

tyvm!

I had a hard time finding the exit, but I really liked the pseudo 3d old-school dungeon and the variety of enemies. The spells kinda felt like they all did the same thing -- not sure if enemies had weaknesses or not. I ended up finding a bunch of potions and seemed to be invincible, mostly, haha. A cool game, overall.

Nice game,  thought i got lost when i was in a big open area, but kept going and eventually found the end. Would like to try again, but don't think i'd find it again easily. I did start off drawing a map on paper (who needs an onscreen minimap :)) but starting running out of space and it go messy. had fun playing

Developer(+1)

It's a 40x40 map with a 2 tile border. You start in the bottom left corner. I believe 3,38 were the start coords.   The three notes lead the way to the big room. Yeap, the big room is where the ending location is. Designed it that way to 1) make it harder for the follow-the-wall folks to find the Throne Room, and 2) lead them to the Alchemy Lab. ;)

(+1)

i only left space for around 25x 25 :). the notes and alchemy room were good, reassuring to know that i was generally going in the right direction

It needs a minimap or coordinates to help exploring. Everything else it's great! you fit all things in the 64x64px layout perfectly. Congrats!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Seems unanimous - next time around,we get a minimap in there. :D

Nice game with a simplicity that defy everything while doing the job.
Like many other player, I think a mini-map and at least a probability to dodge some encounters could be a really cool addition to the game. Because you made some "stronger" mobs than the other, maybe giving to the player the ability to evade the fight with weaker foes could be cool (obtained after a few first fights).

Thumbsup for the technologies used as well !

Developer

Agreed. A dodge or flee option would be good to add in the next pass at this. Thanks!

This looks great and played really nice! Really impressed you fit the gameplay into such a small space! Well done!

Thanks!

Good game, tried to just run around to get some heal and almost died from rushing in walls xD It was fun to play in your game.

Very cool, never played one of these old-school "fake 3d" dungeon crawling games. I only wish there was a minimap and I could run from encounters as I kept getting lost and trapped by enemies! Nice work!

Developer

My initial "Flee" was to backtrack the player randomly about 3-5 spaces and then rotate to face a random direction. I found that I was getting myself lost after fleeing. Since time was running short, I just scrapped it instead of redoing it.

I thought this was great! Really reminds me of old games! Very impressive you managed to fit in all of the elements! The viewport for the player was effectively smaller than 32x32 worked brilliantly! Love the amount of detail you managed to get in and a levelling up system etc. My only gripe is that it's very easy to get lost in these kinds of games - a map would have really helped - even if only a small portion of the map, where you had already been or needing to press a key to open. Loved it!

Developer

Agreed. A mini-map may be in order for the next iteration.  Very happy you enjoyed it!

I love the art style of this game. Then I remembered that I am directionally challenged.

Developer

I got lost in it once, too, and I made the map. :)

A neat little dungeon crawler.  I liked the variation in spells and enemy attacks.  It was very easy to get lost, I wonder if some more landmarks would make it easier to know where you've been before, but the challenge of finding your way was half the fun!

Developer

I used the signs as landmarks, but I agree that given more time a mini-map of sorts would have been a helpful addition. :)

I found this pretty fun. It reminded me of the games my dad introduced to me when I was younger. My terrible sense of direction bit me in the arse for this one, but I enjoyed playing. Cheers!

Developer(+1)

Most of the older CRPGs were like that. We would bust out the graph paper and map it ourselves. :)

I remember I used to use the 'keep to the left' strategy a lot. Took quite a while but it worked like a charm :P

This game is pure nostalgia, well done, resurrecting genres from the past

I really enjoyed this game. It reminded me of all the time i spent in the 80s playing Wizardry and Bards Tale.

This was pretty neat! I haven't played a game like this in ages so it was nice to play a bite-sized throwback!
