Use of the limitation
A layout of the dungeon map rearranges itself every time you have the dream (just like in my nightmares) . Doors don't always connect the same two rooms in both directions, and there are always at least two paths to the exit (an interesting technical problem which I solved with horrible brute force and inefficiency, where my graph theory people at!)

Cookies eaten
None, but I'm pretty sure one tried to eat me at 3AM last night

Having to move my way through some sort of multi-dimensional dungeon was really interesting (even if it hurt my head thinking about where I was)! The steps to exit counter helped with that, though, so that was a good feature to add! The gameplay itself was fun as well, partiuclarly having to use a shield offensively, it was much more interesting than just using the sword the whole way throughout (and using it to deflect those bullets in the vase room made me feel clever, so thank you for that). The graphics worked well, and everything was readable, so that was great to see! Nice work on this, it was solidly made!

Thanks Cakestorm! Nice to see you at another minijam!

This is great! Feels like a lot of effort put into it. I played it like 5 times. If you learn the patterns - it becomes pretty easy. If you make a character slower, it would feel much better. I don't think non euclidean works like it, but I like this type of games so it's a good attempt. One of my favorites in this jam

Developer

Yeah that's a great note, and thank you for playing it multiple times I'm so flattered!

I originally had him move slower, and some of the rooms are tuned for this, so they feel super easy now since you can just sprint through them.  I usually tune the game at my skill level, then, (figuring I'm disproportionately good from endless playtesting) I increase some of the main parameters by 2x (speed, health) for lower-skill players. I'd always prefer to to widen the group of people who could enjoy the game, even if it makes it too easy for us pros ;)

Maybe having a "difficulty setting" that just reduces speed and health could've accommodated the best of both worlds here, though.

(Also, reading about it, I think you're right that 'non-euclidean' is probably not the right word. Sure sounds smart though, hehehe)

Yeah, that's why you should playtest on different people each time. But time is low, and what is jam but a playtest, right?)

Developer

100%, exactly

Very nice!  The shield doing damage for you is a unique concept I haven't seen before, and I'm impressed  by how complete this is!  You've got the makings of a finished game here.  Keep chipping away at it!

Best i've seen so far. Great humour and wonderful concept! I played through multiple times to see all the rooms because some were genuinely challenging. Really top notch!

I'm so touched, man! Thanks for your high regards, it means a lot coming someone with as much natural knack for game design as you clearly have :)

Nice juice, I enjoyed hitting the ghosts with bullets shot from staplers(?) Also I like the puzzle element of the steps to exit, especially realising the right door was the one I just came from!

The game sure has charm - I really like the usage of the theme as it really has a dream like quality, dute to me not really knowing where to go.

The graphics are a bit blurry to me and imo could be alot more interesting and surreal to fit with the concept. The entire audio feels weird - best way to describe it as muted - it might has a dreamy quality, but overall lacks the punch for them to really mean anything.

Overall charming, but there's still room for improvement

Developer

Sorry that you're experiencing these issues with blurring and sound quality, that definitely hasn't come up on any of the devices I tested on. Would you mind sending a screen grab of what you're seeing as well as what device/browser you played the game in?

Submitted

Tried using fullescreen and it blurred less - so I'm guessing it's a resolution problem. Firefox btw.

Ah, it's a short jam, so I didn't have the time to squash many bugs on platforms other than the most commonly used (Chrome and Windows Desktop).  I just tested on Firefox and noticed a ton of graphics and sound issues as you described, most of the sounds are not playing and the pixel perfect camera isn't working. Tbh, Unity's WebGL exports and plugins prioritize Chrome and just doesn't support other browsers quite as well, so these kinds of bugs are often low-level and difficult to squash.

Please consider reevaluating the game on Chrome or Windows Desktop, it would mean a lot to me.

I really appreciate you bringing these issues to my attention and following up to help me fix them. I'll put a note in the description that the game is best played on Chrome.

So sorry toi hear that this is a real-life recurring nightmare. Are you Lincoln ?? haha

Looks like a huge amount of work went into this, with mechanics even for casting shadows.

Developer

LOL! thank you for noticing that detail! It was tough to get just right.

It'd be kind of messed up if I had this dream and was a character besides Lincoln.

"Yeah, I keep having this recurring dream where I'm a ghost with an assault rifle trying to shoot a naked dude who looks really lost and scared "

i love it all i love it all. so cool to see a non-euclidean game here, you guys did it rly well it's rly impressive. this would be awesome as a full game with endings etc... the only thing i'd want is for the player to be a lil slower so moving could be more precise (you could add a little acceleration and deceleration too kinda like ze binding of ze isaac)

Ah that's such interesting feedback!

I actually had a shift-for-run mechanic in an earlier version of this game, but my pinky was getting tired from holding shift through every playthrough and I was like "who would walk when they can run, right?"

Based on your feedback, I'm thinking this is probably an example of overfitting the game to my own preferences-- maybe the way to handle this in a real game would be to create  an "always running" user setting. Or just slow down the move speed a bit.

Anyways I'm so glad you liked it, and thank you for the kind words!

I love the non-eucilidian layouts of your levels, I think it brings in a really unique way of randomly generating levels and is really fun to play! Love the art style and animations and all round was a really nice game! Well done! :)

Man, I hate it when I have TRNWILIANEDAMSBAFSRIAN, but I sure like this game!

I love all the little details and events -- the sprites are really charming and the gameplay idea is really unique and interesting.

I got stuck on a loading screen for a minute or two though and had to bail :(
I think it was the second or third loading screen I hit though, so I don't think it's a problem with the loading screen in general. Would definitely try it again!

Ah yeah, that's just where the game ends-- it's all I had time for ahaha.

I'll make it loop if I have time today. Thanks for playing all the way through :)

Edit: I fixed the bug!  Now it loops at the end of level 2, so that you get a chance to see more rooms in both levels, and see how the game changes with different layouts.

Re-evaluation much appreciated if that bug was a factor in your assessment:)
