Use of the limitation
I have severe self doubts and am often my own worst enemy, which is a large part of the reason I've never published a game before, so as soon as I saw the limitation I decided that the player would take on the role of me trying to complete this game for this game jam while my insecurities (the devil on my shoulder) actively try to sabotage the game and prevent it from being published.
Cookies eaten
Yesterday I had a slice of ice cream pie that had a bunch of mashed up Oreos frozen inside of it, but I couldn't tell you exactly how many were in it.

congratulations, very well deserved high rating!
I feel bad just copy/pasting my reply to other messages, but it applies equally here, so here it is lol: Thank you so much! (And thanks for playing and rating, which I’m sure helped it get to third place!) I couldn’t believe it when I saw it! I was blown away by how kind and supportive everyone was in their comments, and I’m so glad people seem to have liked it! :)
Congratulations! 3rd place! (incredible lol but also reasonable XD)

Congratulations! You are on 3rd place!

Pretty interesting idea. I felt the text took a too long to continue, especially on my second run where I just wanted to skip through the text to see the other variants of the game.
Seems like you did really well on your first game jam. I'm sorry I wasn't able to play it before the ratings closed.
Thanks very much for the feedback! I agree, my biggest issue with the game is definitely the pacing, but I didn’t have enough time to add a skip option or trim the text in a meaningful way. (But lesson learned for next time!)
And thanks, I couldn’t believe it! And no worries! I didn’t rate yours until pretty close to the deadline, so I figured you might not get to it in time. I appreciate you leaving a comment on it after the jam ended!
is there a chance for a windows build so i can play it? looks interesting
Thanks for your interest! I don't really know how to upload a Windows build without running the risk of it replacing the HTML build, and I'm afraid to mess around with it this close to the end of the jam, but I'll definitely look into it once the jam is over!
Following up on this: I've uploaded a Windows build, if you still want to check it out! :)
Wow really liked this game! It's really original and I loved that you made all from scratch. Great work!
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Ohmigosh. I LOVED this game!!! You literally wrote my own personal game jam story as well!!! First game jam, first game ever, tons of insecurities, anxiety, self-doubt, self-loathing, need I go on? Ahaha, even now, after the jam is over and done with, it's difficult to overcome our personal limitation of being our own worst enemy, right? But anyways, I love that you made a game like this with this theme and limitation in mind, fitting so well. It's a game plus reality rolled up into one, perfect, beautiful creation.. I am honored to have played your game!!
Oh wow, thank you so much!!! I'm glad you found it relatable; I was hoping that at least a few people would be able to relate to it, but I was a bit concerned that maybe it was just a me problem, haha. And you're right, even after the game is done, the self doubt keeps nagging! (I actually tried hinting at that with the last little exchange with the devil at the very end, haha.) I'm honored to have had you review it! Thanks again! :)
This game was amazing! The narrative of making a game for a jam and the pressure that comes with it, along with the game being made as the dialogue went on was a really interesting approach. Overall, a really cool game!
=D
Thank you so much! I've always been a big fan of meta narratives, and I've also always been my own worst enemy, so when I saw what the limitation was the idea came to me almost immediately lol. I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
Loved it! I don't know what the devil was on about but I think it looked really cool without all the changes
Thanks so much! The default visuals had actually grown on me, too, by the end of it, which is just one more reason not to listen to that pesky devil: the "improvements" that he suggests might not even be improvements at all!
Such a great game! I really love the narration, but would be cool if you added button that can speed up the text
Thanks so much! And yeah, I thought about adding a feature to speed up the text (or just skip it so that the full sentence would show up all at once), but by that point it was pretty late in the weekend and I just didn't have the time to figure out a good way to implement it without running the risk of introducing bugs. (In hindsight I probably should have put that feature in at the outset, since it would have saved me a ton of time while play testing, but oh well; live and learn lol.)
Awesome first jam game! We all have to start some where (and I dare not dig up my far inferior first jam submission as an example haha), but this was great! Even more impressive is that you did it in half the time with the late start. It'd be great to see what you can do with the full time, and I strongly encourage you to keep on going.
My only note on the game itself is just that the speaking sound of the characters grates my ear just a bit much when speaking for longer periods. BFXR sounds are fickle like that though.
Thanks very much! (Haha, I'm sure your first submission is much better than you remember!) I actually started on Friday (sometime in the late afternoon/early evening), so I spent more time on this than I think you think I did (the "all the time you've wasted" line was meant to include all the time I had already spent working on the game up to that point), but the sentiment and the encouragement are still very much appreciated!
And thanks for the feedback on the sound effects! Apparently I spent the whole weekend with the computer volume set lower than I realized, but after reading your comment I tried it again with the volume turned up louder, and I see what you mean: it sounds surprisingly different from (and significantly less pleasant than) what I had been hearing all weekend. (Lesson learned for next time: always play test at various volumes!)
Hello! Great game, good job.
The scenario is a bit slow but I loved it.
Keep doing games.
Thanks so much! Yeah, the pacing definitely could have used some work, but I had been pretty inefficient and inflexible in the way I had coded all the dialogue, so trimming the fat and picking up the pace would have taken me more time than I had left in the jam. (But oh well, lesson learned for next time!)
Awesome first game, great start! You did keep it simple & the execution is almost perfect. Reminds me a lot of "There is no game". Keep it up.
Thanks so much! And you're actually the second person to draw the comparison to There Is No Game! As I said to the first, I hadn't played There Is No Game since the original version first came out years ago, so I actually didn't have it in mind while I was working on this, but then late Sunday afternoon the similarities suddenly hit me and I started worrying that I had subconsciously plagiarized the whole thing lol. (I still haven't gone back and taken another look at There Is No Game, so I'm still not sure just how similar they are, but hopefully it isn't too similar lol.)
You really did a wonderful job! Be proud of yourself! I love this kind of narrative games. It goes for me as well, showing someone who is a complete stranger to you gives a strange feeling of anxiety, but when you see all those heartworming comments, it is really a magnificent feeling. Keep working hard! Well enjoyed :>
Thank you so much! (And I'm definitely proud of myself, if for no other reason than that I actually published the thing. :) ) And yeah, it really is a great feeling seeing so much positivity and support from everybody (you included)! Thanks again!
I LOVED IT! It is very real and also I feel somewhat offended having a simple game haha! Very cool game it's insane that you managed to do it in such a short time with a new engine!
Simple game is alright XD . You game do have a unique mechanism too!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! :) And oh no! I didn't mean to offend anybody! The whole point is that the devil on my shoulder is a jerk and shouldn't be listened to, so don't listen to him! Simple ideas are totally fine (and are often better than over-complicated ones anyway)! And besides, I just played your game, and it was really well done and full of cool puzzles, so there's nothing for you to feel offended about anyway! :)
Your game is VERY REAL!
All weekend I also wanted to watch some videos on youtube, to watch some series. But I won my demon and finally done my game! I enjoyed playing it! It is very interesting idea!
Thanks very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it! (I'm also glad you overcame your own demons and made your game too, because I've already played it and thought it was great!)
Thank you!
One of the most creative concepts I've seen for this jam so far. This is such a great interpretation of the jam's limitation and very relatable. I also had a lot of fun with the mini-game(my high score was 16 coins).
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it and found it relatable! Also glad you enjoyed the coin mini-game; I figured it would be a fun distraction from all the dialogue for anyone who wanted to fool around with it. (By the time I was nearing the end of my play testing and had already seen all the dialogue countless times, I found myself completely ignoring the text and just collecting coins lol.) And that's a good score! (If I had more time, I probably would have made it a bit less RNG-dependent; there were some runs where the coins spawned close enough together that I got over 100, but there were other runs where they spawned so far apart that I couldn't even break 8 lol.)
The plot make me related. Right it's all true that sometimes I may focus on the unnecessary part of the game and procrastinate for days and foget to really develop the major mechanism of the game, and sometimes that feels tiring. Game do need some art, but if we don't have much time, "Enough is enough" _(:з」∠)_ keeping it simple is also good, as long as the game do have creative mechanisms✓
The style of this game feels like the game "there is no game" . Guess you must have played that lol. However, your story are representing a real experience, which makes this plot feels more authentic and moving √
By the way, I use Godot as well lol (about a month's learning) .
Rarely seen in the Jam because most of games are made in Unitymy bad, actually there's still lots of people using it 🤣. (For music I personally also recommend LMMS. You may try it out later ; ) However this game's music is pretty good too 👍 lol)Thanks so much for your feedback! I'm glad you found the game relatable!
It's funny you say that about There Is No Game, because I actually didn't have it in mind while I was working on this, but then late Sunday afternoon I suddenly thought to myself, "Oh no, is this the exact same thing as There Is No Game???" (I hadn't played There Is No Game since the original version first came out years ago, so I couldn't remember exactly what it was like, but I figured it wasn't worth wasting any time during the jam to go back and compare it against my game, so I just kept going and hoped that I wasn't subconsciously plagiarizing it lol.) I appreciate the kind words about the plot!
That's crazy that you've only got a month of experience with Godot; your game was so good! And haha, a lot of the games that I've played so far were made in Unity, but I feel like it's easier to tell when a game is made in Unity because (unless I'm mistaken) it has to have the "Made in Unity" splash screen at the beginning, which Godot does not. And I've never heard of LMMS (I only heard of Bosca Ceoil on Sunday morning when I Googled "good software for making video game music", haha), but I'll have to check it out! Thanks for the suggestion (and for complimenting the music)! :)
Interesting game idea! I think that the pacing of the game needs work and most of the time was spent on animating the text so maybe allow players to be able to skip the text animation for people who can read fast. Other than that, the story was good (I can totally relate to it) and the limitation was used well!
Thanks so much for playing and commenting! I completely agree that sitting through all the text takes too long (especially if you make choices that lead to a game over and you have to start again), so I actually thought about adding a skip feature, but the idea occurred to me too late in the game jam for me to implement it in in time. (Live and learn!) Thanks again! :)
A very fun game, relatable too, lol
most coins collect was 51!
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it! :) (Also glad you could relate; I was afraid it was just me lol.)
And oh wow, that's a great score! I think my record was over 100, but I would guess I spent a lot more time on that screen over the weekend than you did today lol.
