It took me a few tries before I really understood what to do (in particular, I naively thought that if I put on the right color, I wouldn't take the damage), but it was a lot of fun to play from then on! However, I think there's a visualization problem: I often have trouble finding the damage box, especially when it appears below me :(

Otherwise, I seem to have attacked the mages well (with their heads straight out of a boxing match), but after a while their attacks literally take up the whole screen :'( I didn't beat any of them as a result.

Great, short, fast-paced and simple retro game. Didn't understand the mechanics fully until after one or two deaths but honestly the tutorial worked well because it was a simple and clear explanation. Also I think it's something that you quickly pick up on by just playing. Some more audio cues such as on pickups would have been great as well but overall it worked.

Loved how fast paced the game is, really kept the adrenaline pumping! It took me a couple of tries to really understand the mechanics such as the powerups or switching colors to hurt the mages, but ever death felt like it was my fault so while a difficult game it didn't feel unfair or cheesy.

Glad you enjoyed playing through it, good to read that it invoked the feeling I was aiming at.

The mage cat animations on the side are very cool. They give it a sense of eerieness like they are more powerful than us. Good idea about adding the keyboard controls on the screen as cues.

While the game looks cool, the amount of information I have to learn at first to play it feels a little overwhelming for me. Starting the level easy and incrementally making it harder would be a nice idea if you’re thinking of doing a future update. Having some more text / icon or sound cues when interacting with things would also be nice because with all the icons sometimes I’m not fully sure if I’m doing the right thing. I’m also not sure if there’s an end of the level or if just keeps playing, as I don’t really see health bars and I’m not sure, when the cats disappear, if it was me who defeated them, or they just left.

I’m a bit bad with fast paced games like this, so I might be out of the norm! It looks really good though and I think if it were a bit more incremental and had a little tutorial I might adjust better to it.

Sounds clues and made, just forgot to add them … my bad on that part.

The level is gonna end, there is purposefully no HP bar for the wizards , so they feel more erie, but they do have visual indication on HP levels. Losing the staff or an eye as they get lower and lower.

wizards health visual clues

Tutorial sadly I ran out of time to do, would love to include a better one in the future, good point!

Thanks for trying it out even though it is not your genre, and for the kind words. The game indeed get’s hectic and chaotic, even for me, but it was one of the design goals to achieve kinda panicky-chaos state in the player at later phases, just so that the power of the wizards get through.

I do have ideas for future updates, will see if I will get to them eventually (planning or more Wizards for ex, and having the game choose randomly 3 of them at the start).

This game has a very strong sense of style and great art direction. It is on the difficult side, which is very fitting for the story of escaping from the clutches of very powerful mages.

I’m really glad that the theme and difficulty is enjoyable! Thanks for the style compliments, it took some refinement to get it where it is.

Pretty fun, I like how it seems to ramp up the difficulty over time

Developer

Thank you! I’m glad you like the power curve, playtesting was totally worth then!

Fun game! Seems somewhat difficult based on the bit I played. My only real feedback on it would be that due to my hand size, holding two fingers over x and c can get uncomfortable and lead to inaccurate button presses. I tried another pico-8 game and it had the same controls though, so maybe it isn't something that developers can change.

Thanks for checking it out, glad you found it fun! I agree, it is not easy for sure, designed to be somewhat difficult as the game only contains these 3 wizards, defeating them is the end. Oldschool style (but I know that might turn certain players away)

If those buttons are a bit crampy, you can try others as well in single player games, you can use a few combinations:

ZX / NM / CV respectively for the O and X pico-8 prompts! It should help you enjoy more PICO-8 games!
