The upgrade system really made this for me! Ammo management ain't no joke! Definitely nailed that NES feel and I thought the water level was creative and hilarious.

Developer

Thank you for Playing DinoHunt! The Water LVL was made in the last few hours of the Jam, so im glad you enjoyed it!

This is a really fun game that evokes the feeling of those NES Zapper type games. Reminds me of both Duck Hunt and Baby Boomer. I liked the idea of upgrading your gun between rounds, gives a nice sense of progression without sacrificing the skill it would take to shoot all the dinos down. Unfortunately I think the hitboxes on the dinosaurs are way too small, there would be a lot of times where I would have the cursor directly on the dino and nothing would happen. After playing for a while I was able to intuit where the hitboxes are in relation to the sprite so it wasn't a total dealbreaker but it did take some getting used to.

Developer

Thank you for Playing DinoHunt! I definitely do agree sometimes the hitboxes for what I find at least the smaller dinosaurs are harder to hit due to them being accurate to the sprite . But thank you again for playing!

It's a genuinely great game like it's very obvious how much you maximized the time given to us. I do feel tho it may have been better to use the pose instead of the arrow keys to emulate using a light gun. The D-Pad feels clunky.

Developer

Thank you for Playing DinoHunt! I totally agree with the D-Pad being a bit clunky, may I ask what is pose?

Submitted

I'd recommend maybe switching to using the mouse instead emulating a light gun. While not really in theme because it's not too typical for NES games to utilize a zapper and controller at the same time it's still in the realm of NES.

Developer(+1)

We would consider just using the mouse (or having it as an option to turn it on/off) if we keep working on this. We tried staying within the given framework of the jam very strictly, as we aimed for authenticity (and to not be disqualified haha).

Very funny and complete! The gameplay is very good and it is very enjoyable to play, the snorkel dinosaurs are very cute hahahaha What happened to me was after I lost in the grass, I played the water level and out of nowhere it appeared as if I had lost even though I hadn't let any dinosaurs pass, but otherwise I really liked it!

Thank you for playing DinoHunt! A lot of people are finding that the water LVL just kills you randomly (Probably a bugged invisible shirt), but im glad you enjoyed the game!

I totally agree with the other comments below, solid game except the reload button not working sometimes! The water level is cute how all the dinos have scuba goggles... I kinda feel bad for killing those adorable dinos.

Also super catchy soundtrack. I listened to it on bandcamp as well so I could hear more of it without dying lol.

Developer(+1)

Thanks Preston! I always try to uopload my stuff to bandcamp, not always easy to judge a tune during a hectic gaming session!

I played some games, have done 60 points on Wave 7 in the first level and 46 points on Wave 6 in the second one the best so far.

I agree with the person below that sometimes I'm not sure why I can't reload even when I'm not touching any other command but that's my only caveat and otherwise the game is super addictive. The speed of the cursor is perfect, the speeds and different hps of the different enemies feel right and I think their hitbox is big which is good, when I think I'm hitting an enemy I indeed always do. The different upgrades are cool and the difficulty ramps up fast enough which makes retrying much more engaging, there's basically no dead time. The music is super cool and it does feel like a NES game.

Thank you for playing DinoHunt and leaving a comment :). Im super glad you found the game play addictive! Also awesome job with a score of 60 on the first LVL, that beats my original set score by 2!

Was having a lot of fun with it but couldn't understand why my game kept ending. I'd have plenty of air shoot an enemy, then the game would just end. Also, sometimes I'd not get a response on the reload, I'd be spamming it, and sometimes would be able to reload, sometimes not. I thought it might have had to do something with pressing other inputs while reloading, but even then I would still not be able to reload.

It stayed true to NES in that some games you just can't for the life of you figure out  know why you are dying lol. But even with not being able to understand the games internal rules completely, I was pushed enough to play it over and over to get a higher score. So good job!

As a music guy, I have to say, Music was really bumpin. The art is good, but the cover is what truly drew me to play this submission first. Very very authentic looking. Good job fellas!

Edit: will be back to rate when that ability becomes available.

Developer

Hey! Thank you for playing DinoHunt and leaving a comment! To explain a little bit about not being able to reload,  the reload revolves around a cool down of 1 second and currently there is a bug where you are unable to reload while the crosshair is on the dinosaur.  All the music was done by https://goatthrone-audio.itch.io/!

Hi Ricky! Glad you enjoy the tunes. I was able to draw heavily on some old jungle swing tones, Donkey Kong and generally David Wise and progressive rock and somehoe, it all worked out. The game is tough, so hats off that you kept trying!

Submitted(+1)

Ah, I hear it now definitely! I've never attempted any compositions with swing as it intimidates me. Which is strange, as I'm such a fan of prog with all its odd time sigs and such.  I'm inspired! Gonna have to to try something like this on an upcoming jam! Thanks for sharing!

Developer

You're welcome. You'll have to play around with timing offsets to get swing, but once you've figured it out you can just copy/paste it!

Submitted(+1)

Welp, just discovered swing quantization as a potential option. Appears Toontracks drum software has a swing slider as well. No more excuses for me. I'm off to it! Thanks again for the info. Hope to see more submission from you on an upcoming jams!

Developer

Oh, yeah, in a DAW it is super easy :) my advice would be to thoroughly use a humaniser after the swing quantisation, as a swing feel too robotic won´t feel righ.
Looking forward to seeing ya around, as well.
