Hard seemed to run out of notes but I was enjoying the Touhou cover nontheless lmaoo
Tried again and it didn't freeze this time. I got C- on hard :)
I did it!!!
I gotta say, playing through the levels again, it's really clear how well thought out the level design and enemy placement is. I love how the game both rewards patience while learning and then rewards speed and confidence thanks to how the enemies load in/despawn accordingly. You introduce new level mechanics at the perfect pace and combine them in a masterful way to create a great challenge. I could definitely see myself beating this with five lives; I feel like this is the sort of game that really encourages growth in the player across the course of the game. I had such a good time playing this and I'm so glad I was able to beat it! I've uploaded my successful run as well as my second unsuccessful run beforehand. Thank you for the experience 🐦
Game over:
Wish I could rate a 6 for NES Feel because this has the one thing a lot of great games in this jam are missing - ridiculous difficulty that can only be offset by a cheat code! By no means a negative - I found this game incredibly fun to play and would definitely make a hilarious stream game. "Flappy Bird if it was fun." Loved the sprites (especially Kuro's idle animation) . Never have I been so afraid of goofy cartoon ghosts! Genuine fear...
Tried my best to beat the game with the 30 lives code. And I'll be back to beat this game for sure!!
This is utterly amazing - I was already in love with your game from the screenshots that I saw on this jam page, but I was absolutely floored by how you managed to present your game! I'm super looking forward to seeing this one get updated further, what an absolute joy to experience that sense of wonder
A delightful game - the spritework is beautiful. Figured out I could negate knockback by swapping characters, which helped me a bit. Squirrel was definitely my most-used character, it seemed to even be able to jump slightly higher than the llama! It seems like WASD isn't quite coded properly as I couldn't seem to use W to initiate vine climbs, but arrow keys work fine. Climbing can be a bit finnicky, I'd prefer to just be able to hold up rather than have to let go and press it again in order to get the next vine as some of those jumps were super tight.
All in all I had a fantastic time exploring the mountain, I'd definitely say this one belongs on the NES. My final score was 10/10/9, couldn't find that last fish (I assume) for the life of me!
Loved it! Each character I unlocked felt like it solved a problem I had been having with specific different enemies. I liked cashing in my winnings for upgrades, and the boss music was great as well. Really enjoyed zipping around the map. I love all the sprites and there was even a crab. Great stuff!
I love this, I'm the kinda guy who goes for world records that nobody looks at on mario maker levels. Pretty happy with 00:39:05, bit of spaghetti fingers though since I've been playing quite a while! The dash feels great and it was fun to try a few different routes before finding the fastest.
I do wish dashing on top of squirrels worked the same as jumping on top of them, which would make it feel a bit smoother to me (also I spent the first 30 seconds dashing at squirrels thinking that's how I got the acorns back...!)
I love the sprites, the music and the gameplay, fantastic job!
Might come back tomorrow to see if I can improve my time ;)
I congrats on beating this games'd! I loved the concept, the chess-style movement was really cool. I especially liked how certain robots had two functions in the same level, like blowing up a wall then pushing a switch. Letting the player pick which piece to move as so they have to figure out the correct piece for the puzzle could add another layer of complexity (though I suppose Queen would always be the correct pick!) Loved the knight levels especially, I'm a big knight fan. Has a great old-school puzzler vibe.
Thank you for your kind words, and I enjoyed watching you play! You did a good job reacting when mum came in before the music had finished - that's not meant to happen! Interacting with the fish was definitely a mechanic in my to-do list, but unfortunately ran out of time. I'm keen to come back to this game and flesh out the remainder of my ideas and incorporate feedback 😁
Very fun! I love the movement and the feel of zipping around and trying to be unpredictable - actually surprisingly hard to maintain focus of where I'm aiming as well as remember to zip zoop around.
The start of the game is definitely the hardest and it takes a bit of time to get back into the thick of it when you die which makes it take a while to trial-and-error, but the inverse difficulty-curve feels great once you start to take down enemy ships and get powerful weapons. I started with the missile cruiser :)
Not too much worth critiquing since obviously polish would come from extra time, being a game jam and all. The difficulty is mainly at the start, although I like this as the game feels like sort of high-intensity puzzle to figure out the right tactics to go for early and the rest sort of slots into place once you have experience. And beating the first ship is pretty much a win! (Don't get too cocky though, I accept no responsibility for death via hubris.)
The only thing I'd change would be the controls, a controls menu would obviously be great, but I think Space + E for up and down would be better, or something along those lines. Having to engage both Ctrl and Shift was a bit awkward. (Or maybe Ctrl + Shift for Down + Up and Space for boost would make sense actually.) Also I think my mouse was way too sensitive for this game to stay on-target, but I was too stubborn to adjust it :)
Also when using an ultrawide resolution, it basically zooms in to fill. Which I felt might actually be an advantage as it made it a bit easier to aim since I could see further away targets more clearly. Though I did end up beating the game in a regular resolution so maybe not. Perhaps more feedback for the player when you hit a target, but the healthbar going down is clear enough (and the game already noisy enough!) and there would be a LOT of feedback when your missiles and drones are going haywire lmao
GG!
