Description
This soundtrack is mostly orchestral, with lots of strings, piano and orchestral percussion. There are elements of jazz also sprinkled in.
In the hypothetical A Dash From Home, the main character lives a peaceful life with their family at home. They laugh, they play and life is good. However, their home is attacked and you run for your life. You run from location to location, searching for a new home all whilst being chased by criminals who drove you away.
There are three songs that are based on the leitmotif I simply call “Home”, and the three “Running Through…” songs are all based on their own leitmotif I called “Run”. I took inspiration from Bravely Default 2, where the main overworld music is the same basic song, but has different styles depending on which area you’re currently exploring. So, all of my “Run” motif songs are all the same melody but with vastly different styles. This made it easier to make music under the time constraint, have a solid connection between songs, and serve as a fun way to practice writing in different styles.
I used Reaper for all the tracks and many different sample plugins mostly a part of Native Instrument's Kontakt Komplete and Spitfire Audio's LABS along with some other one off plugins.
Track 1: Farewell
This track plays when your home is attacked, forcing you to start running. I envision this being a sad moment that needs time to breathe. The instrumentation is very simple, consisting of a piano, string section and solo cello. The solo cello swells with the “home” motif, marking its first appearance. While this is a sad moment, I didn’t want to start the soundtrack on a somber note, especially when there is a lot more to go. I picture the hopeful ending to the piece reflecting in game as an optimistic remark that maybe you won’t have to run forever.
Track 2: Running Through the Woodlands
This is a very typical “forest” theme with pizzicato strings and woodwind sounds. This is the first of the three “Run” themes, and it’s quite playful with the bouncing strings and mallets. In the game, this would most likely be the first area you would be traversing through. A dense forest is the perfect playground to get accustomed to controls and obstacles after all.
Track 3: Running Through the Seaside
The next running track is a completely different style. To exhibit the feeling of a seaside adventure, I heavily leaned into Latin Jazz percussion. Lots of Congas, Bongo, Maracas, Claves and more. All of the percussion was made very easy thanks to NI's Cuba plugin, which has a simple way of editing a groove and looping it allowing various instruments to exists on one track. The rhythm section stays busy on this one. Piano, Acoustic Guitar and Accordion take over as melodic instruments and are trading the melody and countermelody constantly. This is personally my favorite one of the OST, the Accordion sound mixed with the groovy rhythm just makes it really fun to listen too.
Track 4: Running Through the Frozen Glades
Slowing things down is the final running piece based on running through a field of snow. I envision this as a final area in the game. The chilling environment, the barren landscape and thick snow making it hard to move serve as a perfect challenge to transition to the final parts of the game. This track is quite simple to reflect the bareness of the area, with all instruments playing in the upper registers. Though to add a bit of texture, hand bells softly play throughout the whole piece and pan from left or right. This helps keep things interesting and gives a feeling of loneliness or being lost.
Track 5: Run Away!
The penultimate track is the final showdown. After making through the treacherous snow lands, your pursuers finally catch up to you. This is the final stretch of the journey, so all you can do is run away one last time.
Track 6: Home Away From Home
An almost reprise of Farewell, this track wraps up the adventure with a triumphant piece. It fits very well as a finale piece with a lot of expression with tempo.
I hope you enjoy!
Message from the artist:
This was a lot of fun. I really love doing music and I learned a lot thanks to this experince. Any feedback you can give would be greatly appreciated as I'm still learning a lot about Music Production. I'm excited to listen to everyone else's submissions. Thank you for listening!
Theme:
How does it fit the theme?
The story of the game is about someone who is forced to run away from home in search of a new one. Each new environment they run through has a unique style too the central theme.

Strangely soothing for a Runaway theme, but I really enjoyed it through and through. I like that you changed the style for the same motifs, I also love the instrumentation. My favorite is "Running Through the Seaside".
I see your inspiration, it oozes jRPGs vibes :) (And Zelda also)
Superb composition skills, great melodies and full of dynamics. Amazing job, I specially like the runaway theme, so cool!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm happy you enjoyed it.
Cool tracks that would make a great accompaniment to a game - my favourite track was "Running Through The Seaside" based on its vibrancy and catchy energy.
Thanks for listening! My favorite is also Seaside, it was a whole lot of fun to work on.
I love your melodic style. Very nice buildup too in all tracks with a recognizable theme in each one. Farewell is simply beautiful. I love the combination of piano and strings. Great use of woody woodwinds in Running through the Woodlands. really feels like running too. What is that hilarious little instrument that sounds a bit like an animal (seal?) in Running through the Seaside? Haha. Signature bell chimes for the ice feel in Frozen Glades (the ice theme is one i missed in my soundtrack, simply didn't occur to me in the current heat!). Great job overall creating diversity between tracks and within tracks. Thanks for sharing!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! That silly sounding instrument is a Cuica. It's a Brazilian drum that almost sounds like monkey. It's really fun to use if you can find the right context, and I think it works well here. Thanks for listening!
Cuica! I'm going to look this up. Thanks!
So contemplative... 😯
The motifs and melodies you wrote in this OST are just as catchy as they are lovely. Very memorable music in the best way! I found myself enjoying each song more than the last. Great work!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for listening!
I loved this through and through! Such variety and character across tracks. More people need to hear this!!
You easily earned high scores in every category from me. In the interest of offering some constructive criticism, I would say that track 5 could afford to be more dramatic. It feels stripped down, even compared to some of the other tracks.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I agree about track 5. I had a lot of trouble making it sound right and in the end I simply ran out of time. I do want to see if I can get it sounding right, but that's a project for future me. Thanks for listening!
Track 1: This is a really lovely motif! Beautiful use of mixed meter-- and I love the sound of this cello, so expressive with wonderful legato. Harmonically, I'm interested the whole time. Solid job, and great ending.
Track 2: Ah, this was a refreshing change of pace-- I love the upbeat strings and the layering of new instruments with the second repetition. The B section is well-done, that wooden percussion instrument has such a cool sound to it-- I can't quite tell if it's just a marimba.
Track 3: Another awesome change of pace, this track is so fun! The guitar sounds great too-- and the kit percussion is a wonderful addition. This is a prime example of how to remix an existing melody in a cool way! Despite such wildly different sonic worlds between tracks 2 and 3, the melody helps keep it consistent.
Track 4: I love a nice, delicate winter level theme, and this accomplishes that beautifully. I love the slowed-down melody-- another great way to mix things up, and it opens up room for more interesting countermelodies-- as you have done with the crotales/glock.
Track 5: Another great mood shift, the dramatic piano and drums sound great! For some reason, something about this mix-- maybe the solo violin?-- makes it feel less intense and more computer-ey. I can't pin exactly what it is, sorry.
Track 6: I'm glad to hear the return of that beautiful solo cello! The buildup to the release is really cool-- and the conclusion is wonderful, I love a good bVi bVii I...
In all, I'm impressed by your work. This is a good soundtrack with a lot of character. I think it is missing a sense of identity, which is perhaps a result of just how varied each track sounds. It's a shame, because that variety is my favorite part of the whole thing-- so take my words with a grain of salt. I am impressed-- keep writing, it all sounded great!
Thank you so much for your insightful feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed it. That solo cello is the Tina Guo library from Cinesamples. It's really nice for expressive legato stuff as you've heard, highly recommend it (It's also fairly affordable on sale given it's quality). The wooden percussion is a Marimba, though it isn't the most realistic sounding one out there so that's probably why you couldn't put your figure on it. It works quite well the piece though. For track 5, I honestly was having a lot of trouble making it sound right, so I completely understand what your saying. I changed the instruments a lot and mess with a lot of different effects, but in the end, I ran out of time so I just had to upload what I had. Given more time, I probably would make it mesh a bit better with the rest of the soundtrack but it is what it is.
I really wanted to push myself to try a whole bunch of styles because I'm still experimenting a lot with music production, so that's where that variety came from. A missing sense of identity is a valid critique though, and it's something I'll surely improve on in the future. Thank you for listening!
Love the use of leitmotif here! Running Through The Woodlands is my favorite, the chords and the bounciness are just so pleasant.
Love the feel of your soundtrack, especially Running Through the Seaside, it's such a clear mix and it mixes upbeat atmosphere with some excitement and yet a bit of melancholic undertone for me, very nice!
Thanks for listening!
Very nice soundtrack! I enjoyed the different characteristics of the running tracks, great work!!
Thank you! I tried to get a nice variety of styles so I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Cool soundtrack!
My favorite was "Running Through The Woodlands". I really liked the whimsical nature of that one. Close second for me was the frozen glades. I feel you really captured that feeling of frailty of a frozen landscape there.
It sounds like it would fit a game really well! Thanks! I'm really happy how the Woodlands piece turned out, especially the percussion. It took awhile to get it sounding right, but it was worth it.
Yeah, it's a nice piece :)
this is so well done! the orchestration is well thought out and the variety between tracks gives a strong sense of adventure. i especially love the little seal sounds (is it a cuica?) in track 3 :))
Thank you for the kinds words. Yes, that is a Cuica! I really like the sound, but it's also a risk to use since it can easily sound out of place, but I think it works great here. Thanks for listening!
Very enjoyable and gamey! Running through the woodlands is my favorite, very catchy and onomatopoeic, nice job!
This is amazing!
Thank you so much!
