Description
Everything was composed in Reason 12, The base instruments are all atmospheric, or typically middle eastern, and some of the bass sounds are sampled from a very interesting video on sand dunes (www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yFaMsUawi4), or recordings I made of wind and sand over various objects, modified with lots of reverb and echoes to give a spacey and lost feeling
Message from the artist:
Hi All, this was composed for a platformer style game where the primary mechanics are the shifting sands of the level (ever changing platforms) and the ability to speed or slow time depending on the needs or situation of the player.
The tracks (with the exception of the main menu) are all supposed to work at different bpms depending on the effect enacted by the player in game.
All comments and criticisms are welcomed, and please enjoy!
Theme:
How does it fit the theme?
Between the the words and the photo, the theme made me think of time, and time made me think of sands.

The Arabic influence and your sound design made your soundtrack stand out! Really lovely work. Each track was fresh and unique - "The Run Out" was my favourite with its addictive beat and evolution of the music throughout.
Thank you! I really appreciate that
I love the sandy stuff! (weirdest comment for a song I've ever given)
And yet all I needed to hear, thank you!
Are We Dune: The percussion really helps give the sandy vibe to me. Love the choice of time signature here.
Main Menu Theme: Very nice ambience. Effective main menu track!
The Run Out: Cool rhythm, I love that snare position.
Nice work!
Thank you! also props for the Jupiter djinn
Glad you noticed! Golden Sun 1 and 2 are my favorite games of all time!
Clearly a man of culture
I like the vibe and concept! I like how Run Out provides some contrast to the previous tracks. Good job!
The first track really impressed me! Two others are good, but not so grandios. Well done!
Very nice entry! I really liked the sound design elements you introduced in the Main menu theme with the wind pads you recorded which complements really well the inherent "dryness" of the string instruments playing the melody. I also really liked the snare drum in "The Run Out" and especially when it hits on those counter beats, it gives a lot of dynamism to the track. Well executed overall!
Thank you! really appreciate that, the drums didnt seem suit everyone's taste thus far haha
I think the "sandiness" of the snare drum fits the whole desert atmosphere pretty well haha
I still have no idea how to make music with menu vibes, so I love that you've actually done it. Really impressed that the sand pretty soft on the ears. Love that the clock in The Run out Session is off, really makes me groove more. The off-snare idea is cool! I think it gets a little lost in the 4 on the floor kick drum, but I love what it does to the groove.
Thank you! yea i had fun with that, I gently rolled and egg shaker in front of a microphone, rolled off some of the high end, and surrounded in a comforting blanket of reverb and echo, similar technique for the wind, and left it minimal so it just felt cavernous. Im really glad you liked it, seems the snare was hit and miss for many
Oooh did not suspect is was an egg shaker at all!
I like the Arabic vibes, they fit the game really well. The main menu theme is a very contemplative track, you could get a nice, extended, ambient track out of that!
Very cool! I really like it when games go for this type of music, so to hear a whole soundtrack of it would be awesome! I really like how dynamic the tracks are - going from very ambient and spacey to very energetic.
Great job!
Thank you!
Pretty neat concept, and I quite like the vibe you were going for! The instruments in the last track sounded a little funny, but other than that, very enjoyable, well done!
Thank you!
The music (especially the first two tracks) really conveys the feeling of sands in the sense of sand dunes and such. And while I like the sound of the final track, it feels more like the wild west, and even in a cartoonish style - nothing wrong at all - I quite like it - but it breaks away from the other tracks.
The main menu track could easily work in a puzzle-kind of game setting, a bit like You describe the idea.
Thanks for the feed back, and yea the idea was as the platformer progressed there would be different style of levels starting at a vast sandy nothingness working towards a more tech-y advanced civ (who control time) , so the style was supposed to evolve, but I didn't have time to really run the full music gauntlet. But Im really glad you enjoyed it!
I like the vibe of the Main Menu Theme. I agree with Jon Odaté on the percussion, drumset took my little out :)
I like the approach that you took going with a middle eastern vibe. Overall I think if you had time to really flesh out the melody and orchestration these tracks would be great.
With the last track "The Run Out" I think you may want to explore a different style with the percussion. I think the drum kit is not the right sound. I feel if you swap it out for something like a Djembe or more ethnic sounding percussion to deliver that speed and energy that I'm sensing, I think you'll have a more captivating track!
(^_^)v
Thanks for breaking that down. Ill give it a go!
I think i was supposed to add a photo of the session in the DAW and I don't know how to retrospectively change things so I'm posting it here
If Are we Dune or The Run out Session started playing while I was platforming, I'd either get my skill ten times increased or pause the game and jam to the music. However, that snare placement in The Run out Session was really weird and I think it made the song much worse than it could be.
Thank you! The snare was intended to be off to give that off kilter feeling, but I understand where you're coming from. Glad you liked most of it though!
