Description
The soundtrack uses different genres throughout, but for most of it i tried to go for a fusion between electronic and movie soundtrack, with a bit of folk at the end.
The game would be a topdown RPG/Zelda-esque kind of game, where the first track is the main theme, the next 2 are area themes, and the third is kind of a dramatic last chapter of the game theme, and the last is the credits/town theme.
I used Garageband and MuseCore for the soundtrack, and drew inspiration from games like - Minecraft, Sonic The Hedgehog (2006), Final Fantasy 6, The Legend Of Zelda : Tears Of The Kingdom, and probably more that I forgot about lol.

I decided that i want every piece in a different time signature, so for every track Ill state the time signature.

March of a Clock - Inspired by the many Minecraft piano pieces, but mainly by Subwoofer Lullaby. In 2/4 (although it technically was in 6/8 when i wrote in originally, but i ended up making it in 2/4). This would be the main theme of the game.

reforestation - Kind of inspired by the Sky Island Theme from Zelda Tears Of The Kingdom. In 3/4, and it uses the whole tone scale (F whole tone scale to be exact) for melody AND harmony, which means there's a lot of augmented chords lol. This would be the theme for a mysterious forest which would be the first or second dungeon of the game.

3284 feet under - Inspired by the Mines Of Narshe theme from Final Fantasy 6, the Lanayru Mines theme from Zelda Skyward Sword, and by the Aquatic Base themes from Sonic 06. It uses 4/4 for it's theme, and it was the last track I made. This would be the theme for some deep abandoned mines that would be a dungeon around the middle of the game. Also, and i only remembered this halfway into the rating stage - it's in Phrygian! In fact, it uses a lot of movement from the b2 to 1, so it's really embedded into the track's sound.

Out Of Time - Inspired by... idk. I'm sure there's something i heard that sounds like this, but i didn't really think about anything when making it. It uses 6/8, and was originally way more orchestral before i made it super electronic. This would be the music at the last chapter of the game, the music for the final dungeon, when the hero is running out of time, just before the final boss.

Back In Town - Inspired by the results screen from Sonic 06, and Alma Gov (an Israeli singer-songwriter that makes awesome music :) ). It uses 5/4 (my favorite time signature!), and is actually kind of in Locrian (the melody resolves to D# and puts some focus on A with the notes of E major, but the harmony is for E major). It doesn't sound very video game-y, but it could be kind of like a song for the credits. This would both the town theme ( the guitar part from the beginning until the middle) and the credits music (the entire thing, it starts with the town music and then opens up around the halfpoint).

I hope you enjoyed my submission, and that you check out my other music!

Message from the artist:
This Jam came at a pretty weird place in my life, and it really helped. Hope you enjoy!

Theme:

Tick Tock...

How does it fit the theme?
I used the theme as the inspiration for the main theme music of the game, and kind of decided what the whole game would be from there - the game is about saving the world against the timer (which is overall a pretty typical RPG theme), and I used that as the idea for what to compose the entire soundtrack around.

Using a different time signature for each track is pretty cool, I like the way you use inspirations form a variety of soundtracks to bring together a cohesive OST.

Out of Time sounds a bit like some of the older works of Waterflame btw, maybe that's the "something you heard that sounds like this" you are looking for :]

Developer

Thank you! And after listening to some of his stuff, i have to say that i might've been thinking about his work on Castle Crashers lol.

great integration of the theme here!! the clock ticking of course in "March of a Clock", but making every song in a different time signature is really unique, and i haven't seen it done in any of the other submissions!

your inspirations for each song were definitely heard as well. i found "reforestation" to be the most interesting personally; taking such a light feeling soundtrack like the sky islands from TotK and making it feel so dark with the percussion was really awesome to hear.

well done! i really enjoyed your stuff :)))

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you so much! I really like that sky theme, so i really wanted to at least kind of get the essence of it in my track, and i'm pretty happy with the result :)

Your inspiration in said games is truly recognizable. Each track has it's own vibe and identity to it.

For me the reforestation stands out! :) I like that one...

Developer

Thanks! It seems to be the favorite one of a lot of people lol.

super clean mixing!! the vibe is so loose, atmospheric, and whimsical.  I especially liked the bass in "reforestation"

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you! Someone pointed out that the bass is very similar to the "hook" from Fantasia (Paul Dukas), which i didn't know until they did lol.

The drum in "3284 feet under" is a vibe. The whole soundtrack was very chill. Also the middle "O" being a clock in the cover was a nice touch haha.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! The drum in that track is actually really inspired by the drum in Aquatic Base Level 1 from Sonic The Hedgehog (2006), because i love that track sooo much lol (mine isn't nearly as complex and energetic as the Sonic one, but it was still very much the reason i made that drum).

And i thought the clock in the O was super cute, so i'm glad you like it!

The unusual key signatures add a lot to these tracks for sure. Many of the tracks suffered from needing a little more variation, especially harmonically. However, I enjoyed the murky, frenetic smudge of notes that made up the melody in "reforestation", it gave it a darker character that I think made it the most successful track of the five. Normally I praise the upbeat, high energy tracks of a compo entry, but I think for you specifically, tapping into your darker side might be a good move.

Developer (2 edits)

Thank you for the advice! I do find myself a lot of times falling into chord progressions that loop forever, so it's definitely something i should and do try to work on. With reforestation, i was really trying to go for a mysterious feeling melody, but it would be interesting to try to lean into that darker vibe more with other (new ofc) tracks.

Very intriguing and diverse compositions here! Love the different time signatures and that every track feels unique. Overall, a solid entry all around, nice job!

First off, for March of a Clock, it feels like it could use a little more movement to keep things interesting - this track feels a bit bland compared to what you have going on in later tracks, and though the theme picks up at the very end; it feels like it takes awhile to get there.

For reforestation, I like the idea of introducing the sounds individually and then combining them over time, but I feel you could have cut the first 30 seconds or so of just the wind instruments - IMO, it drags a bit and detracts from the energy of the rest of the song; especially for being background music that should be helping to set the vibe of the area.

Absolutely love the energy in 3284 feet under! For this track, the long intro has a much better payoff - the beat coming in the way it did was a pleasant surprise and felt really good.

Out of Time captures the feel of the final area perfectly! It has that marching sort of rhythm to it, and the synth that comes in at 0:08 helps set the tone really nicely. This and 3284 feet under are definitely my favorites.

Back in Town's guitar feels really dry compared to the rest of the album, like it desperately was craving some reverb. I think the song would fit well as town music or end credits, but personally I would have either dropped the entire guitar intro and just started the song at 1:10 OR added an accompaniment to it to keep things instrument.

Developer

Thank you very much for your compliments, and for your advice! It's all noted, and some of it was stuff i was thinking about, but ended up not doing. Very much appreciated!

Nice OST! reforestation is a very cool track, I can definitely hear the Zelda vibes there. The following tracks were pretty solid in the context and made for a consistent OST. I only felt a bit lost in Back In Town, which felt very dry compared to the previous tracks, but it's just my personal taste. In genral, nice work :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! Yeah, in retrospect it might've been better if i polished Back In Town more than i did. Appreciate the advice!

Nice music at all, good job!

Developer

Thanks!

Makes you think huh! Love how different the moods are and Time Out is just so groovy!

Developer

Thank you! Time out was actually the 2nd track i made, right after march of a clock (which makes sense with the shared melody lol)

Submitted(+1)

Your style is quite unique. Yet your influences are obvious: Zelda and Fantasia (Paul Dukas) on Reforestation, Final Fantasy on Time Out. But you draw inspiration without copying. That's brilliant.

If you don't mind a word of advice, you can shorten your intros and/or add a sound (or a instrument) to keep things interesting during the build up.

Developer

Thank you very much! Zelda is definitely a big influence for me, and even though i wasn't thinking about it at all (I do know it, and mightv'e actually played it in orchestra in the past, it just didn't come to mind during the jam), i have to say that the similarities are undeniable. I'm sure that subconsciously I was pulling inspiration from it. As for FF music, i'm not actually very familiar with the series and it's music, but when i was making the track i wanted it to sound like the the dramatic build up to the final fight of an RPG, and Final Fantasy was actually one of the games i was thinking of, so congratulations on being so accurate!

And i am very happy for any advice, so thank you very much for yours!

Unique tracks with smooth melodies and boppy beats. I especially love the chords you used in the last track, "Back In Town". Great job!

Developer

Thank you very much! Yeah, it's hard for me sometimes to come up with interesting chords, so i'm pretty happy with the ones i chose for Back In Town :)

Submitted(+1)

Whole tone scale use is really cool in the second track, it really gives a sense of mystery. The augmented arpeggios towards the middle are chilling. I definitely get Mines of Narshe vibes from the third track (and just randomly gonna state that FF6 is one of my top 5 favorite games lol). Overall a great OST. Reforestation is definitely my favorite!

Developer

Thank you so much! I'm honestly I'm really happy with the fact that i used the whole tone scale, because i rarely see it used, and when never for a full track (and not just for a quick transition in movie or something), and it made me use augmented chords, which is also some thing i rarely use or see get used.

Submitted(+1)

Well done, really enjoyed the odd time signatures, especially the breakbeat in 3284 feet under making it really not feel 4/4

Developer

Thank you! It was really fun to do!

Submitted(+1)

Really good! I appreciated the more orchestral/live instrument sound you went for. The arrangements were really nice. I feel like you'd kill it if you arranged/scored a movie for live orchestra.

Developer

Thank you so much! I actually play in an orchestra (as a trumpet player) so it might've helped me lol.

I really like the track Out of Time!
