  • The dialogue system is very well-done! There was a lot of flexibility showcased from changing the font size to applying shifting color gradients. The writing itself is cute and comedic in many ways too. I chuckled when I read "professional tagonist." I'm very impressed with the art! It seems that everything had a lot of care put into it with the short time given. It almost reminds me of Dust: An Elysian Tail. The combat system is quite cool too, with proper utilization of deltatime to speed up and slow down gameplay for special effects (with a really nice sound effect to go with it). I also appreciate the addition of the "cgc" cheat! Things like that can help judges a lot in terms of experiencing more of the game in a short amount of time. It feels like a game that could be expanded upon by the team quite well if given more time! Well done! The GDD is very detailed and organized well. My only real critique is I would have liked to see some sort of art assets that might help communicate ideas at a glance. It's clear that the player experience was prioritized with their time respected, even if that meant the ability to speed through dialogue. The lead Twilight/GivenFlesh put together this document very well to guide the rest of the team towards communication and completion. It's great that everyone on the team was able to contribute in a significant way, and shoutouts to Krysta for being the Barrel tester - every good team needs one of those. Great job!

Have you checked that your GDD is publicly accessible ?
Yes

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
A narrative game with a high energy combat section between chapters. Make sure to talk to all 12 NPCs in each chapter!
WASD to move, mouse clicks during combat, shift to run in town, e, z, space, or enter to advance text. Try not to spam it too much, there's a rare timing issue we couldn't track down, but it only happens if you spam.

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
Brand has felt like a weapon their entire life, but that can be okay. Weapons can be strong. And with care and love, they might even learn how to trust themselves around people without hurting them. For this sort of theme, we wanted it to feel like you didn't "wield" something to cause damage, but your very being was the source of that damage.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
I think that mostly, we just wanted to have a good time and make something fun. We truly hope you enjoy it,

The game is really cute and fun! Sadly I’m not one for narrative games so I skipped through most of the dialogue, though I do love rocks though. The music, artwork and sound effects are all really nice.

Considering I skipped most of the dialogue, at times I was a little confused as to what I am supposed to do, and while I get that this is mostly a narrative game, a quest tracker or todo list of what I’m supposed to do would be great. I like being able to spin around and deforest the entire forest. The GTA in me would have loved to be able to spin in town, to… give the NPCs a friendly hug. I like being able to bounce off enemies and the mushroom, as well as the slowmo that shows when you can do that.

Though a slight issue I found was bouncing at the side of the map and beside an ally. This causes the player to bounce rapidly between the ally and the map border, killing the ally extremely quickly (so fast that the ally goes into negative HP).

I like the work put into the sound effects to portray the game, and while I don’t really play narrative games, I can see how much work you put into the dialogue and story of the game. The game is a good prototype of the game jam, and I hope for some minor updates to polish the game more! Great job!

This is a really cute game! I like the pinball nature of the gameplay portions. I think we ended up having some similar ideas in terms of game mechanics. Nice job!

Adorable game, very nice artwork and interesting interpretation of the jam theme. The squiggly font was a bit distracting and made reading a bit hard for me, but other than that, no issues. Well done!

i think it's great that the story and combat are both about accidentally hurting your friends

I appreciate the comment! I really wanted to get that feeling across in more than one way, glad it landed!

The music, the art, the gameplay and dialogue, all fit really well together, you guys made stellar work! It was really fun seeing all the different dialogues for the NPCs, and the combat was challenging at first, but once you got the hang of it I had a blast bouncing off stuff.

Great job!

I loved the whole thing - from the music to the characters to the combat - and I might've shed a tear or two at the end

Nice work! That was fun and cute! I like Flare’s faces the best I think. :D

Developer(+1)

Mya did such an incredible job with the faces, Flare's faces were especially emotive and were fun to work with in writing!

very cute and very silly, but also heartwarming! I genuinely got a lil misty-eyed at the end >w<

very good job gang, it was fun!

Awww, I'm glad! I've always felt that games have a way of seeping into you a little deeper because you're a participant, so I've always wanted my and my team's games to be meaningful. It makes me really happy that you felt that way!

Really lovely! I'm a huge fan of all of the little characterizations of all of the different characters. Yay is easily my favourite :)

The story was quite touching in the end, and I really enjoyed the combat system. Well done!

Thank you so much! Yay was my favorite to write, too! :3

It's adorable! The characters are so cute and well-drawn, the front walk animation is so adorable, and the combat feels really good (especially bouncing off mushrooms, you nailed that). The dialogue so far is charming and sometimes funny. I can't find Eugene and Jane, I must be blind, I'll have to come back to it when I'm less tired. I hope it has a happy ending :3

Developer(+1)

They're both in the southwest of town, if that helps! I'm glad you liked what you saw so far! Let me know if you come back and finish. I wanted the story to be kinda story-book-esque, so I can say that it's pretty light and breezy by the end :3

Of course, Eugene had the glasses, for some reason I thought that was someone else. I finished it now, the story was very cute! The combat was like pinball, so very satisfying. I'm glad Flare got a hint at a happy ending too. Their pissed off face was so funny haha.
