those mob sprites are fantastic!
i'm amazed by all the work put into it, you did a lot of things, and yes the game has bugs, but it's still very cool to play, and you absolutely nailed the old JRPG vibe. Congrats !
Once again you pull off some amazing artwork, but unfortunately the game's too buggy and too hard for me ;-;
I went out into the fields trying to find the castle, got attacked and had my party almost wiped by the first combat encounter. Then my game crashed when I went into the item menu, and had no items. I think I tried to back out, may have hit confirm on accident.
The second time around, a group of goblins/rats attacked me, dropped my cleric, so I tried to return to town to heal up and maybe buy gear, and it seems as if the area loaded improperly, all the npcs were guards and the town's collision didn't match up to the tiles. When I did leave I got attacked as soon as I left the 'town', to the point where I think it happened before the world map showed up so it looked like I was still in town when the fight happened. After I ran, it booted me to I assume the upper left of the map where it is mostly water and a small peninsula.
If you do find the time to work out the bugs on this, I'd love to give it another try. Let me know if you do!
It's clear a lot of effort went into this- what you've achieved in just 10 days is very impressive! The amount of variety in terms of characters, items, weapons, enemies, etc. is insane. Also, I checked out the main page and saw all the effort you put into following the restrictions of your target hardware. It definitely paid off! Everything from the controls to the spritework to the music hits the retro feel perfectly and makes for a really fun game. The Zelda II reference was also not lost on me :) Nice work!
The art on display here is spot on. This is the Final Fantasy vibe, from the chunky overworld sprites with 2-frame walk cycles to the oversized weapons swung overhead in combat. I like the classes and the way they pay homage to Final Fantasy 1. It really is a distillate of pure JRPG feel. I encountered a couple bugs, but that's understandable given the complexity of the game within jam constraints. Very well done.
This game is very beautiful and very nostalgic too XD. You realy made an "Era "Feel"" game.
The art remember a lot the J-RPGs from 80/90's (and i love it S2) and you put some good variety of classes and mechanics.
I find some bugs (i became cliped at the wall and the controls stop to work one time when I was in menu), but it's ok for a short time and a lot of sprites and classes you made.
I realy apreciate your game. Congrats for the great work ;D.
The artwork is top notch, and the battle music really slaps! This game really captures the feel of those old NES RPGs (or like the super high budget NES RPG you never knew existed and never got localized from Japan maybe)
It wasn't very clear where the content ended, I found a second town but could not enter it. Also the initial stats and equipment made every fight a breeze so I never had to really try strategizing. But nonetheless this is an amazing technical demonstration of what could be a really cool RPG. Great work
Thanks for playing! I went for a lost game gear Game Gear game (GG gets no love lol). As for content I ran out of time before the jam ended :( so no second town, cave, or trial in the desert past the mountains, also why the difficulty is unbalanced.
Ahh wow I had a Game Gear haha, I can see that now. Very cool though, I absolutely think you could build on this if you wanted to. Did you do the pixel art and the music yourself? It's really great work
I did most of the pixel art, but Christerious (www.twitter.com/Chrysterious) did the music.
The music and spritework are great.
Technical-wise the game is severely buggy. I encountered several game-breaking softlocks, 1 crash, and a few non-game-breaking, but noticeable bugs.
Gameplay-wise, the combat was too slow to be fun.
Thank you for playing. Yes there are bugs :) not enough time to finish testing and balancing before the jam ended. Ill try to address those after the voting ends.
Btw if you can remember please list the bugs
I went back to town to rest at the inn, and the inn was gone/broken, and then I left town and I was in the ocean.
I crashed the game because I tried to equip my priest, and apparently I didn't have an item he could use.
I bought only one copy of each item but I was able to equip my entire party.
I pressed Enter (i.e. the "start" button) on the Start screen, and it told me my party was lvl 1 with 0/0 hp.
I had a random encounter above a river tile, and after the combat I was in the river tile below.
I can phase through trees, walls, water and the like by moving "diagonally". I think the game is getting it's movement detection mixed up e.g. I hold up+right, and the tile above me is empty, so I move right, even though there is a solid object to my right
Btw if you can remember please list the bugs.
