A-Maze Me

Description
I tried to compose a piece for Big Band.
I was greatly inspired by Katamari Damacy's "Crimson Rose and Gin Tonic" (which was inspired by Benny Goodman's "Sing Sing Sing").
The structure is fairly classic, with moments when all the brass instruments play together, and others when they fall silent to allow a piano solo.
I tried to skat, but I suck, so I put in two piano solos.
The solos were played by me with the tempo halved and then quantized to get something right.

As always : Reason 12. I used the basic plugins

From the first second, it already sounds more 'jazzy' than my entire song haha! You clearly got the jazz feeling right, and without just pasting dissonant chords everywhere. Piano solos, a wild drum, energetic brass... it got it all. And I took the time to listen to your previous three entries as well, as this is my first time joining the RMCC.

1. For "in front of the temple", I love the idea of harmonizing a singular melody in different ways. I’ve done this before and it is a lot of fun!

2. For “protect the black king”, I like the small story behind it. I believe the challenge was to make it flow like a movie track, and it is really nicely done.

3. For your chiptune, it sounds very well. No genre or sound is out of your limits I suppose ;)

It also seems like you’ve become quite the celebrity here, winning submission after submission and being deemed ‘unbeatable’ in the Discord. Not that it surprises me, I saw it coming a mile away. Great entries, and until the next one! :D

Thanks for your comment. I'm pretty proud of the fact that I've managed to make jazz sound pretty much the way I wanted it to in my head. I spent several hours listening to and deconstructing jazz pieces to fully understand how to construct my music. I'm happy with the result.

And yes, I'm starting to get a bit of a reputation in this microcosm of musical jams on itch.io (it's a small microcosm). It's a lot of fun. I have a feeling that, with all the newcomers, my reign will soon come to an end.

Strong, polished composition and captures the ideas you describe, but it does sound derivative I guess. The horns also sound digital and a bit harsh, but can't have bigband without brass. Thank you for not scatting.

This is so well executed Selkione! The instrumentation is fantastic and the solos are really good.

Also, I'm not sure if you're using a convolution reverb but the space you created with whatever reverb you used is so realistic. Along with the mixing, it feels close to a live recording on a stage. Brilliant work!

Wow ! Thank you very much for the compliment about the mix. I have no idea what is a convolution reverb. So if I used it, it’s a happy coincidence.

I tested a few reverb presets and chose the one that sounded best to me.

Ah I see. You selected a really appropriate one. I'm not super familiar with Reason but I think the RV7000 MkII has a convolution mode. It captures the characteristics of a real life space (like a concert hall) and then applies it to the dry sound. The one I use in Logic called Space Designer is handy for orchestral stuff.

Crimson Rose and Gin Tonic happens to be one of my favorite songs in Katamari Damacy and I can definitely hear the influence on your track, especially in the opening stretch! But you also put a unique enough spin on it that your song still feels original. The piano solos are great :) I’ll probably be shocked if this doesn’t win. Amazing work!
