Chireikiden - Fowl Detective SatoriView game page

A short little game that isn't actually as short as you think where you find the odd bird out.

Baggy eyed Satori is mood. I loved the writing in this game, perhaps my favourite in the entire jam. And this was made in scratch of all things. I have no idea why you would subject yourself to such torture and how you created a quality game despite that but I applaud you.

scratch users are doing sisyphus every day

The dialogue code was the worst part of it everything else was literally just logic gates and simple variable functions

SO MANY OF THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Always happy to see Satori using her third eye to express her emotions, that makes her cute.

Art is really cute. As for the concept and gameplay, even after I figured out I was looking for Mamizou, it felt like I just eventually had to resort to clicking around randomly. Maybe her leaf was covered by another bird sprite?

Developer(+1)

yah the birds spawn on top ofeachother unfortunately....its not just her leaf though!!

Unfortunately due to Scratch's jankiness, the best solution was to run a line of code that pushes Mamizou to the front of the screen. This works half of the time, and it's mostly due to a lack of time to code in detection for overlap that looked nice.

Music and art was good, I liked sad Satori.

The writing had a few bugbears of mine: Filler sentences like "she sensed malice in the air", burly detective syndrome stuff like calling Satori "the mindreader" or calling mamizou "the pseudo-avian".

This is just something that stuck out to me but, I read Aya and Mamizou's dialogue as like, American Southern? They had a certain air to their dialogue that read that like. Mamizou's "yers" and shortening of every -ing word.

DeveloperSubmitted(+1)

hello i did the writing

i am not familiar with burly detective syndrome. i simply synonyms. it is a bit stilted yeah

aaand mamizou was supposed to sound southern, yeah. its a trope ive seen a couple times in translations of her text. i think she might have a dialect in japanese that has gotten that sorta response. aya was just supposed to talk fast though oops

Alright,

I was programming in scratch before going to Unity and I want to say that this game is...pretty good.

The art and music are great, The text breaks pretty easily through.

Couldn't really find any difference between the birds so just spammed through them.

Good job on making this game.

Developer

the text engine is just. like that. also my bad 🫡

Was honestly afraid that the imposter bird switches locations every now and then but am relieved that click-spamming works.

Many birds....

Best strategy...

you.

Nice "spot the fake", it's high quality for 72 hours!
Would be perfect if spamming "Next" properly progresses text, also maybe have less borbs stack on one another.

Also heard the "Lunatic mode" speed of the music, funni.

DeveloperSubmitted(+1)

Both are kind of hard to work around- I suppose for the next make it smaller and only appear when the text is finished, but in the way you're describing, with how the engine works, I'd have to take a screenshot of each and every textbox with all the dialogue, program it in to show that if it's prematurely skipped, and repeat that... 139 times. Unfortunately one of the major downsides of Scratch is how utterly jank some things tend to be.
As for the borbs stacking, also hard to go around but also semi-intentional. Except for stage 2. For whatever reason the game is more inclined to put Mystia at the bottom of the screen, causing massive stacks to form. Somehow harder than stage 3 in part to this.

The art and music are both fantastic. The gameplay is simple, there are a few visual bugs and i felt like the diologue lasted a little too long (I read quite quickly) but knowing that this was made in scratch kind of negates all issues i have and makes this a great game.
