Uh oh, Sakuya brought knives in a gun fight. Turns out knives hurt way more than the gun here, but that's a good thing: Sakuya will just have to eat more bullets :3

I had so much fun with this, and the playtime's length is perfect too. Everything's swift, the map and Sakuya's sprites are rather well done(!) and the sounds and BGM: real good!

I've featured this quality game in my showcase of THFGJ6!

Quality gameplay!  The devs should consider making a full game like this!

This was SO GOOD, that I want a full version now xD.

Catchy gameplay, old school type, better since you don't really need a reason to shoot anything in Gensokyo xD.
Quite fun to play, even with the flashes, my eyes hurt but definitely worth it.

Kinda easy if you just hide, you could add an obstacle you need to shoot before it gets near, dunno what, but it could work.

I would like to play this online with anybody, I wonder if in the jam discord is a section where we could play the online jam games xD

"So anyway, I started blasting" <- This is what Touhou is all about, lol. Great description.

Really cool game. I've wanted to play this ever since I heard about it, so thanks for making a build.
Regarding the game; audio, visuals, and concept are all top-notch. The game is not particularly difficult, and only requires some patience from the player, which is both a plus and a minus in my book. Other lightgun games usually have DPS checks here and there, to punish defensive play and low accuracy. I don't necessarilly think the game needs to be more difficult to finish (it's good if jam games are playable for people with all kinds of skills), but it would be nice if the score system took accuracy and time into account. A hi-score feature would also be nice, for added replayability.

I'm super impressed that you've managed to implement multiplayer (online and offline?). I'll try to find someone to play with.

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the feedback! We’ll be tweaking the gameplay and difficulty moving forward, and we will absolutely be looking at adding more player performance stats to the end screen!

Alright so before anyone asks why the upload date for the most recent post-jam build and the jam build are about the same, I forgot to rename the build’s zip file for the upload and replaced the jam build by accident. The jam build is still the jam build, just with a different upload date

It seems single player isn't accessible without an active internet connection. First jam game with DRM???

For some reason the game crashes after I choose single player. (I didn't try multiplayer.) I can hear stage music for a few seconds (but no stage graphics) before the crash happens. (Happens on jam and postjam builds.)

This exact problem happened with me as well! Thought I was the only one haha.

A very fun game. I love the voicework, it's a neat touch. I don't know what Time Crisis is, but this was fun to play and get good at

Submitted(+2)

lol the nostalgia, wish I still had my lightgun around to play with it... the game is well polished and it does feel like time crisis, I'd totally play this with stages that go forward and more enemies etc

(+3)

Never played Time Crisis before (maybe one or two arcade shooters at Dave & Buster's, many years ago), but this was really fun and polished! Art and effects are very nice, and trying to speed through the balance of cover/reloading and shooting was great, especially with a friend I got to tag along. The sound design was very good as well, with not just the light gun sounds and music, but those announcer lines.

My only suggestion would be to make the spacing between knife projectiles a little wider but more constant, as sometimes it felt like I needed to duck to wait out a whole attack cycle without being able to get some tricky shots in.

Developer(+1)

Hey thanks for playing, appreciate the feedback!

We absolutely rushed some of the attack patterns during the jam period, so in the post-jam build (and going forward), the attack patterns will be tweaked to give more interesting opportunities to peak between knife volleys!

The timer and combo meter both freezing during the world was really funny; gameplay was fun all-around. Also... wow that music. Two amazing composers.

Barbossa Approve. and as i was playing with a friend who was also playing i asked him a question and he said "IM A LITTLE BUSY AT THE MOMENT!!!" the reason he said that to Barbossa is because we was really into the game!

(+6)

it was a very interesting and intriguing game

i really like the concept and visuals, and the music is good. im not really good at these types of games so i found it challenging but was easy to pick up on the attack cycles. it reminds me of the shooter games i grew up playing at arcades when i was a kid. overall great game, good work on everything!

I... am little confused, instructions say you need to hold space to reload and same in the game, but really I had to do the opposite - hold space to get out and shoot?..

I'd wish there was some effect when enemy actually hit, instead of shoot having same sound and visuals if you shoot space or invulnerable boss (There are invulns between spellcards, right?) and arcade white flash would be better turned off by default, especially as it plays in menus too, you mentioned it, so hope for good.

Spells from boss herself feels great,  they really hit you if you greedy and require parttern memorisation for  putting the most into fight.

Developer(+4)

Thanks for playing and for sharing your feedback! The instructions were rushed out in the last few hours and we forgot to check how well they were written afterwards (we just fixed them now), sorry about that!

(+6)

Really fun! Controls were super responsive, and the spell card system felt like a real natural fit with the time crisis style of gameplay. The flashing lights and the music were a bit too intense and started hurting a lot.

authentic time crisis experience

sakuya is well-illustrated but it is a bit painful to see everything with the screen flashing every shot
shooting and dodging is good stuff though

i simply wonder who this asshole is who is unloading real deal lead bullets into sakuya at the hakurei shrine of all places

Developer (5 edits)

Thanks for the feedback! The jam build of the game actually included the option to disable the screen flash effect. However, based on people’s reactions, the post-jam release will see the screen flash effect reduced in intensity and be disabled by default!

Also:

Reimu just got a brand new gun and will shoot on sight, on site. The first person she sees is Sakuya

-The overview on the game page

:^) Hope this helps :^)

No Crisis Flash(aka the red flash that indicates enemy attacks) really screws me over, you just hafta feel out the attacks. Though its nice you highlight the projectiles, it's just that I wish there was a way to distinguish between projectiles that hit you and the projectiles that will miss you. The Time Crisis games usually highlight slow-moving(non-hitscan) projectiles with an Orange tracer on top of them being able to shot mid-air.

Defeated Sakuya in the third attempt. (my spam-clicking too stronk lol)

Accessing the options menu from in-game doesn't work, I can't click on any of the options. But other than that the game runs smoothly.

Great work, loved the music and visuals. Maybe adding a headshot mechanic could bring more fun?

The “Quit to Title” button doesn’t work…

Developer

Thanks for reporting, the bug will be fixed in the post-jam version!
