Edit: Issue appears to be resolved since latest configuration update: https://itch.io/post/8930145

We’ve noticed a significant number of reports regarding corrupted downloads, particularly for larger files from itch.io.

On 2023-11-21 we completed full migration to a new CDN after a gradual roll-out during the week. We didn’t receive any reports during this period, but we have now started seeing your reports coming in. To assist us in diagnosing the issue, please respond to this thread if you are experiencing the problem, providing details for each point below:

  1. Link to the affected game page
  2. Size of the file and filename you’re attempting to download
  3. Was the file recently uploaded? (If so, when?)
  4. Was the file uploaded using Butler? (This is only relevant for page owners)
  5. Your geographical location (if you’re comfortable sharing)
  6. A brief summary of the issue - does the download cut out? Slow down? etc.
  7. Are you downloading via the app or through your browser?

Note: There is no need to re-upload files. This is a delivery-related service issue. The files you’ve previously uploaded are securely stored in our primary storage, and we have no reason to believe there are any issues with them.

Thank you for your patience. We hope to have a solution ready soon.

Thanks for the reports everyone. We had a call with the CDN and where able to identify the issue and push out a hotfix. We’re still testing but everything appears to be functioning as intended on our end. If you are still experiencing issues please reply to this thread.

Edit: We are still getting reports, so we’re continuing to investigate
Edit: We are considering the issue fully resolved since this latest update: https://itch.io/post/8930145

6. At first the download starts with the expected downloading speed, however it gradually lowers to 8mb/s and once a portion of the game is downloaded (700mb in my case) the download stops. It doesn't say "Download has failed" or any sort of error, by all means it looks like the game has been successfully downloaded, but it's incomplete and will not extract.

Beyond the obvious problems, this is the most concerning. It even tells the correct file size when starting the download. But people not paying attention (why should they, error messages are a thing), will get corrupted files and blame the developer.

Admin(+1)

Yeah, this is a pretty egregious failure on the end of our CDN. One would expect that if it can’t pull the full file it would fail the transfer and not mark it as complete.

There is a suspicion that the file is saved with the wrong length because it is downloaded completely but is no longer saved to disk correctly. The exe file is complete but there is no data at the end. That is, the whole problem is not on the server, but in the process of saving in the metadata sent from the server.

(1 edit) (+1)

Above is incorrect, if you watch it then it stops at the size it ends up being its just the server acts like its the real end of the file.

Trying to launch an update here, the fact it fails and acts like it downloaded fine but is corrupted is confusing to users and I'm postponing launch because of this, at least if the system reported the fail correctly to the browser users would know it downloaded wrong and the issue was on itch's side.

Yes is exactly like you described.

Hey there!  I received another report about the issue just now from a user claiming they purchased the game and tried downloading in the last half hour and encountered the issue.

Thanks, I was able to confirm it’s still happening here. Investigating.

Oh so this might be why my recent download was cut abruptly. Anyways, here's my report:

 1. Free GUI icon pack

2. Around 15MB

3. It says that it's uploaded 2 days ago

4.

5. Indonesia

6. At first try the downloaded file was 8MB. On second try it's downloaded correctly.

7. via browser

This is rather interesting, with the file being only 15MB. Most downloads fail silently above 100+ MB.

Download using the browser (Chrome).
All three available downloads (pc/linux, Mac, Android) fail, file size ~8 GB for the first two, ~2GB for the last.

The failure is that the download breaks somewhere halfway through, and the message in chrome is "failure - forbidden". There are no corrupted files, it just aborts the download.

This is my own game page, but also reported by some of my customers (which is why I went on and gave it a spin).
Edit, just noticed the question list, adding:

  1. Link to the affected game page https://naughtyroad.itch.io/light-of-my-life

7. DDL through browser on a PC

But yeah, as Strehnx said, pretty much all dowload from your site have been failing for a couple days. Not literally all of them, but most of those i tried. The one i mentionned is just the last one i tried. I thought it was a problem on my side and spent hours trying to fix it. Good luck fixing it.

  5. Each time I attempted download, I get a different size file around 8gb and each time 7zip, WINRAR, and Windows builtin archive extractor says the arrchive is corrupt. Upon further inspection it seems not all of the file completed as it is a UE4 game but contains no executable and is possibly missing other files as well.
  6. Tried several browsers.

Glad to see I'm not the only one with these issues. Can we get an estimate on the time until fix? I have basically the same issue text as spamboxje1601.

Have had a hard time updating a few games, they would stall and restart after around 100 MB, most have eventually worked, accept Shards of God, updated about a week ago, just won't finish downloading.

Just an update for everyone. We are still testing and debugging. We just pushed out a configuration change that based on my testing seems to have alleviated the issue. Please do keep reporting if you are seeing issues though, as it will give me more pages to test.

I wrote a comment some Hours ago.

My Problem got solved and i can download without problems again.

If you guys did an update, Its Working !

I was able to download my games. Whatever you are doing it's working. 👍

Hey there :D.  I just received another report about downloads failing.  A customer tried to download this project multiple times and was met with slow download times, then it failed partway through each time.  Figured I should report it here in case it's related, as I haven't had reports of failed downloads until this month.

This sounds like a system configuration issue, not a download issue. Your virus scanner may be defaulting to not trusting any executables downloaded off the internet.

Link to the affected game page- any game

Size of the file and filename you’re attempting to download- any size

Was the file recently uploaded? (If so, when?)- I don't know

Was the file uploaded using Butler? (This is only relevant for page owners) - I don't know

Your geographical location (if you’re comfortable sharing)- Usa

A brief summary of the issue - does the download cut out? Slow down? etc. - download normally until it reaches 20%. First download will slow down but, keeps downloading until 25% - 35%.

Are you downloading via the app or through your browser?- Chrome and internet explorer

Side note: tried to use alternate download mode but download never started when active

DiBS for Mac returns an error after decompressing the ZIP file. Upon opening, Mac OS Sonoma (14.1.2) identifies the file as damaged, and offers the option to trash the app or cancel attempting to open it. I am downloading using Chrome.

This is not a download issue. The file has downloaded successfully.

This error shown by macOS Gatekeeper when trying to run applications downloaded through your browser. The developer has not created a signed build with Apple so this is the warning generated.

Unless you want to disable Gatekeeper, we recommend installing games through our app: https://itch.io/app. It will allow you to run the game without changing any system settings.

This isn’t a download issue, it sounds like you are’t familiar with how to extract and run a game downloaded from the internet.

If you use the itchio app, it will automatically manage the download for you: https://itch.io/app

Alternatively, since you already have the file downloaded, you can follow these instructions:

  1. Locate the downloaded ZIP file on your computer.
  2. Right-click on the file and select “Extract All…” or “Unzip…” from the context menu.
  3. Choose a destination folder where you want the extracted files to go and confirm the action.
  4. After extraction, open the destination folder and look for the game’s executable file (usually labeled as .exe for Windows) to start the game.

Make sure to extract all files before attempting to run the game, as running it directly from within the ZIP file can lead to errors.
