The embedded game was way to big and I had to scroll to get it to Fullscreen to make it work. The Carma at the start was to slow for me. But I love  the art (remined me of riddle school) and the music. The machinates worked well when we got to the sea and I liked that we start on the land than go to the sea, its nice to see the whole story.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Definitely going to look into making the land camera a bit better. I'm not sure about the embed side, it had a lot of problems initially which forced me to use a much larger embed size to try and support as many browsers as possible. I'll have to keep looking at it to see if I can improve it more. I'm glad the art and music had some good nostalgia vibes too!

I really enjoyed combat and investigating part in your game, that was fun to do! I think it would be really cool to be able to explore more of the story and even more islands! Or communicate with other ships, maybe :)

The only comment I'd like to add is that it is relatively easy to do things not in the order it was possibly intended: I accidentaly found the prisoner in the very beginning and got a clue about him a bit later :D

I'm glad you liked it! I actually wanted players to be able to encounter things out of order as a form of more open-ended story telling but it would have been better if the game checked if you had gotten the clue first and altered the conversation slightly to reflect that. I definitely planned to add more conversation and world exploration to the islands but had to end up cutting most of it for time unfortunately.

I like that you had different modes for being on-foot and sailing the boat! The default viewport size is too big for my screen, but pressing fullscreen made it small enough. This definitely has potential for being expanded further!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I'm glad the fullscreen button worked to fix the formatting. I hoped adding it would help for both larger and smaller screens so glad to hear that it did.

It gives me an error in the HTML browser version. Maybe you have to activate the SharedArrayBufferSupport if you haven't activted yet in the settings of your game page. you can play my game if you want: https://itch.io/jam/-pixel-game-jam-2024/rate/2718966

Developer

Hm, that's unusual. What browser are you using? I do have shared buffer array enabled so it should work without a problem.

Chrome in a Windows 10.

Developer

I'll have to take a look at chrome on my other machine. I haven't had any trouble opening it on this one but maybe I can figure out why it was having issues.

Pretty cool! I like that it has a story and the naval combat, while simple, I could see more being built on top of the current foundation.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I'm thinking about trying to expand the game more so I'm glad to hear it's a solid foundation to build off of.

This is an extremely ambitious game with alot of potential, I can definitely see this growing to be top contender. The feeling of exploration is well presented and I honestly enjoyed the narrative as well ^^ So do keep up the great work!!

One thing to not at least from my experience is that I had to play it downloaded as browser was not scaling correctly for me.

Developer

Thanks for playing and the kind words! Sorry about the browser version, someone else had the exact same problem so I did a couple of things on my end to hopefully fix it like changing the embed/adding a fullscreen button. For my browser, it opens in a new window which ignores the embed formatting so I missed that issue.

The game has huge potential. Reminds me of old Uncharted Waters games.

Good job!

Developer

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it and see potential in it. I may try to take it further and add more to it after the jam.

I like that you even managed to include narrative in between a very complex system

Developer

Thanks! The original idea was to try out a dialogue manager addon for the engine so that's why I made sure to get a decent amount of narrative in. I was definitely starting to regret how many other systems I was trying to juggle as the submission date got closer and close though xD

nice work check out my game (you did rate my game in gamedev.js)

Very impressive in terms of scope, and finding islands and other sailors in the ocean gives you a nice feeling. I had to restart a couple of times to work out where I was going - the King doesn’t remind you after the first dialog - and then it took me a long time to find the first island because it wasn’t directly West of the starting island. Easy to see where this could head with more time, I can imagine following shipping lines and landmarks from island to island, and like I say, incredibly impressive to get all this done in the time.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! It was definitely a bit too ambitious probably as I had to simplify a lot of things down the final stretch. I wanted to add an arrow that would point towards islands once you were near them so if I add something like that later, that might really help with the aspect of getting lost. Or maybe I just need to add some sort of map, even if it's just a static image or something like that. I also wanted to add a notes section that would track conversations that you have had but I didn't have enough time for that either.
