Really loved the art and the music! Super polished and well made! Controls were a little clunky & you could avoid using your melee attacks and just spam the magic missiles by spamming attack button, which felt like it defeated the point of the mechanic, but otherwise it was great!

Developer

Glad you liked the art and music, I appreciate it! I agree the swap mechanic didn’t come out as good as I’d have liked. Thank you for the feedback and for playing!

Nice polished game. My only critique is that the exchange element didn’t really mesh with gameplay that well until the final boss.

Thanks for playing and for the feedback!

This game has some real heart, and looks really good on top of that. I like that it’s a combat action game that does not rely on super speedy agile movement, but still requires good reflexes and awareness by the player. The boss designs are engaging, and their phases build excellently on top of each other. You must have a lot of scars, because you are really strong.

Holy, I love it! One of the most polished games I played for this Jam, and very impressive that it's built with Love!
The game is incredibly balanced. The bosses are engaging, but gives you just enough time to react to their attacks.

I managed to get through the game by just constantly spamming the attacks and let the magic missiles auto target the boss. It feels a little bit game breaking since I'm sort of bypassing melee attacks lol.  It still was an amazingly fun experience!

I hear you, I think spamming the magic attack ended up being a bit too strong of a strategy. Thanks for the feedback and for the kind words, and thank you for playing!

Awesome game. The art is amazing and the gameplay feels great. I really appreciated the music and how it was synced to certain story beats. Camera work was on point too. I got back up one time.

I don’t know how I feel about the magic. On the first boss I though it to be a cool ebb-and-flow of combat, where you attack on the in-between stages and cast when they’re attacking. By the last boss the gameplay loop basically just became melee ASAP hitting nothing so I could cast my spells again. I don’t know if this is really a bad thing because it was fun but it essentially just sort of became a reload-and-survive game at that point.

Thanks for playing! I agree, I feel like the magic didn’t really work out the way I wanted. Thank you for the feedback and for the kind words!

What an amazing entry!! The isometric art style, the emotional music, and the well-designed bosses are really what makes this game shine. I especially like how in the first boss, the background turns black for one attack. The story is also extremely captivating, and seems like a sequel to TRYH4RD (maybe?). While on the topic of story, the dialogue system was also executed perfectly with flavor text and screen shake to spice up the conversations.

One small nitpick I have however is how you could’ve utilized the theme more. Right now, I feel like the winning strategy is to just spam the attack button so that the homing magic bullets just hit the boss without you ever even needing to get close to it. Maybe instead of exchanging weapons every 3 times you press the button, it could be every 3 times you hit the boss with that weapon?

All in all, amazing work and can’t wait to see what you make next time! (I loved TRYH4RD btw)

Thanks a ton for playing and for the feedback. I agree, the swap mechanic ended up being a little abuseable. Also thanks for playing TRYH4RD too haha, glad you liked it. This game was definitely meant to have a similar vibe to TRYH4RD so I’m glad someone picked up on that.

Thank you for your comment, I really appreciate it!

Awesome game! The simple art style and the sound design were spot on. I think making the magic attacks homing was a really smart design choice to keep the fight moving and not too hard. The story parts between the fighting were also really well done! :)

Thanks a ton for the kind words and for playing! I’m glad you liked the way the magic attacks worked.

The personality of each boss can be felt through each fight, engaging with them feels like a conversation and really leaves a great impression in a short amount of time. The game handled really smoothly and felt like a successfully crafted experience. The music is AMAZING and really enhances the impact of the project to that next level that gets you thinking abstractly while you're experiencing everything.

Thanks a ton, I really appreciate all the kind words. I’m glad you liked the music and the cutscenes. Thank you for playing!

Wow, truly blown away by this. The visual design, varied bosses, solid controls, and great move telegraphing all come together to make some great gameplay. And the excellent score and affecting story add a nice level of polish. My only feedback is that the exchange mechanic is a little too subtle. It actually took me a few fights before I noticed that the sword and magic attacks were melee vs range, since I was always waiting to get in close and then spam attack. But overall, this is an incredible experience!

Developer(+1)

I’m glad you liked it! Sorry the swapping was subtle, I could have done a better job explaining it to the player. Thank you for playing and for the kind words!

Was hoping you'd take part lol. Your boss designs never dissappoint

Love the visual design overall. Still manages to be beautifully simple and readable like your other games. Especially considering that this was your first time doing 3D

AND THAT MUSIC  (  OH GAWD THE MUSIC  ).  Any chance you could make the ost downloadable lol ?

The telegraphs for every boss's attacks were superb. They each had some great personality and flair in both their attacks and in the overall story.

However, I have some issues with how the player character controls and works

I think his movement speed is a little too slow in general. So much so that he felt clunky sometimes.

And I'm not really a fan of how normal sword swipes count towards reducing the sword swipe count. I feel like it would have been better to reduce the sword swipe count on actually hitting a boss.

Because in the game's current state, you can mostly just keep swiping until you get the wand, and then from there you can keep spamming magic since they're effectively homing missiles ( which is necessary considering the controls so no issue with that lol )

As a result, the game felt a little too easy imo. That said, I guess this setup allows you to play the way you want, but I feel like it could have been made more tighter since it's a little easy to cheese

Never the less, this game was still fun AF. Great entry. After reading that post-mortem I have to ask though, is the game's title what it is because you were left with battle scars ? lol

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing and for the feedback! I really appreciate it. My original intention with the spammable-swapping was to incentivize taking advantage of every opening. For example, if the boss is in a spot where you can’t hit them with the sword, a skilled player could spam sword slashes (possibly opening them up to taking damage depending on positioning) to get a quick magic volley off.

Though, in practice, only the final boss ended up dangerous enough to punish that type of behavior, so the first two bosses end up being really easy to just waltz around and spam magic; I definitely hear you. I also wish I’d incentivized sword slashes more (the sword deals about 50% more damage than magic, but it’s tough to notice).

I think in general, the game is on the easy side for sure. I’m not as used to making threatening patterns in a top-down plane like this, so even the harder attack patterns from the final boss end up feeling not too scary.

I might tweak the movespeed a little post-jam, it is a little slow. Glad you liked the game though! The music was honestly a trip, I almost gave up on the OST multiple times during the final week. I’m really happy the first and third track came out as good as they did, though the second track I kinda phoned in tbh. I’ll upload the OST for download soon!

lmao I wish I was clever enough to title the game ‘battlescars’ after my own experience.

Thanks again for the comment, always love hearing your thoughts.
