How does you game fit the theme?
In order to win this game, you cannot be alone.
You have to gather all your monkey friends, and this way you can beat the enemy! You're not alone with all your monkey friends!

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
I did code it all myself from scratch. I used a game engine with plugins and extensions.
I did not make the assets myself from scratch.

Not alone... now that's a sure thing!

What a pleasure to find yourself at the end with an army of little monkeys!

The music is very well found and remains in the head, I think I'll sifloter it all day ^^

I found sometimes frustrating not to be able to go back, I wanted so much to take all these little monkeys! Is it a choice on your part?

Otherwise the realization is simple but neat, I guess you have experience in game jams? For my part it is my first game jam and I am inspired by your creation for future ones.

This game deserves to see its development continue, with animations and more diversity. Do you plan to continue its development?

Congratulations for your work.

Developer (1 edit)

Hi there!

I really appreciate your well thought through and very kind  comment!
Indeed I chose to stop the monkey  from going back, to keep up the pressure to run forwards and focus more on jumping the platforms correctly.

Yes, I plan to continue the game after the jam, because I did not have a lot of time for this jam. It would be much nicer to have a tribe of gorillas, not just one gorilla. And that they jump up the platforms to make avoiding the bananas more interesting. And probably attacking the gorilla and throwing bananas at him   could be an option. Obviously animations, and I had some other cool ideas that I want to add.

Well I have seen the screenshots of your game, (I wasn't able to properly run it on my PC), but it is absolutely impressive! How you implemented expandable mechanics so you can build out your space ship,  all the glow effects and VFX, the particle effects, the collision effect when planet earth gets hit, it's really an amazing piece of work, especially for your first game jam! Super well done! Especially for your first jam game!!
Unfortunately I did not have that many sleep less nights as you to work on the game lol, only one sleepless night. So I posted a short game. How did you guess I had prior experiences lol?

So I have two major browser game projects that I'm going to release as soon as they are finished. After that  I will start working on my previously made jam games. There is one other jam game completely buggy, so I'll do that first and after that  most likely this ape game. I want to turn it into a colorful game of jungle chaos and unexpected thrills, as it deserves! There is so much you can do with it, so I will have a look which features I'll have time to implement.

Feel free to follow me if you want updates on the game and other games I'll post.

Ah it's a pleasure to run into someone who takes the time to actually respond to comments!

I see that you have several projects in progress, I subscribed to your account to follow the developments!

I suspected that this was not your first game jam because you went to the basics and you proposed a game with mechanisms that work without getting lost in trying to do more and more and misusing all the tracks. We must have a tendency to think too big the first few times. I myself have been working on another project for a year, I can't see the end of it because I keep adding features. I love games where you can unlock skills so I put them in all my games ^^

I will follow the evolution of this monkey game, with what you plan to add it will be really fun I guess!
Yes i'm french :D

Developer (1 edit)

Of course, great comments merit a great response! ^^

Yes, 'Apes, Together, Strong' and 'Split Jump' are still in progress and will have great improvements. And I still want to add more features to  2 other games.

That was a very smart and educated guess from you! Yes, after a while it is easier to organize yourself and know how much you can do.
Also I  wanted to create the mechanics for automatic jumping so I can use it in another game, so that was what I was trying to do in this game.

Yeah, when you work on a super big project, it's super tough to consistently work on it, and especially if you keep adding new stuff. I understand that creative drive. I think it's important to know your end goal so that you can be efficient. Do you want a lot of people to play your game? Then maybe you can finish it without new features, and when you see a lot of people play it, add more. Or if you want to sell it, plan on marketing strategies. Thomas Brush talked about creating a shortened version prototype, but which is very polished to find sponsors for your game.

Nice, I'm happy you're interested in the monkey game. There will be some cool add ons to it, I'll have a lot of fun with it!

Hey bro

I really liked your game

I have only 2 comments

First, it's  repetitive, and why the controls from arrow keys not wasd?

Second, There isn't any animations

Overall, I really enjoyed it

GO ON BRO!

Developer(+1)

Hey there, wasd will be added after the jam.
I didn't have time for animations before the deadline :)

Thank you for playing and for the comment!

Submitted(+1)

very happy and energetic atmosphere. love it! Didn't you procedurally generate the map? that's really cool! I can see someone already mentioned that it's a bit repetitive. Maybe you could add more different types of platforms that would help.

there's one big issue is that the upper row of platforms is too high. Thus, I was off the screen most of the time when I jump.

Developer

Thank you very much for playing my game and taking the time to write!
Yep the platforms are generated.
I could add different platforms, yes, for each stage. But I had actually much more engaging things in mind, more interactive than different platforms.
Just didn't have the  time to do it before the deadline :)

Submitted

Nice game! A bit repetitive, but I liked the atmosphere and the story, congratulations =)!

Developer

Thank you for playing.

Submitted(+1)

Well done!

Developer

Cheers

Submitted(+1)

Game is fun, graphics are cool, but platform placement is kinda repetitive. And if you fall down you can't really go back to the last low platform, and sometimes it's a while until you see the next one. Overall I enjoyed and nice game!

Developer(+1)

Yup, it's a jam game ;)
Thank you for playing!

That was a very... interesting game.

It was fun if a bit memey.

Developer

Oh no, "very...interesting", that sounds bad haha.
Thank you for playing! :)

Submitted(+1)

really fun game

but after a while if you have a big number of monkeys the audio sounds a little bit weird, but overall very nice game

Developer

Thank you for playing.
What do you mean?
The audio does not change at all even   if you have more monkeys.
Which audio changes??

Submitted(+1)

no it doesn't change but it sounds weird when all of the monkeys make noise at the same time.

maybe it's like that for me I don't know but really fun game good work.

Developer(+1)

it happens when you pick up three monkeys at the same time (they might at occasion   stand on top of each other, so sometimes you don't notice you picked up 3).
but it's unrelated to how many monkeys you already have.
Thank you for explaining  though the issue you had with it!

Submitted(+1)

APESSSSSSS! Great music and art! Was fun to have more and more monkeys following

Developer

Thank you for playing!
I'm glad you enjoyed the concept! :)

long live APES!

Submitted(+1)

I liked the frantic way the monkeys followed behind you! also enjoyed the minibosses that divided the gameplay into different sections, I would say that the gameplay is a bit unforgiving, if you fall down, it could be a while until you get a platform to get back up again.

still, I had a lot of fun, good job!

Developer

Hey, thank you for playing!
I thought about  making the monkey be able to walk back a little. Or I could make it so you can always walk back to the last jumpable platform.
I'd need to think what would provide the fun-est experience, also together with other features I might add.
Because the goal is to follow the gorilla as fast as possible.
Btw. your profile picture is amazing, with the melting floating ice cream!

Submitted(+1)

Thanks ;> it is one of the first digital animations I've done!

Developer(+1)

pretty cool, with the propeller and all!

Submitted(+1)

Cool game, you could make it so that you can also move with AD because epic gamers like me are more used to that and some keyboards don't have arrow keys. MONKEY

Developer (1 edit)

Yes, for sure, the new version will contain AD controls!
After the jam I will be able to update the game.
It's been my honor, MONKEY
Thank you for playing.

Submitted(+1)

It would be very nice if the followers used the same path as the main monkey.
At first i was confused with the dificulty of the map, but figured it was random gen, great job.

Developer

Thank you for playing! :)
Yes, true, I could generate different patterns for different levels, let's see!
I thought about making the monkeys follow the main character directly, but I'm not sure exactly if that'll be such a great effect, or if it's better if you can watch the monkeys to learn how to best jump.

Submitted(+1)

this game has potential. this is my criticism, tho: The main character was indiscernible from the mob of apes, making hard and losing myself while running for my life. secondly, there's not enough difficulty scaling in the game, i would've loved some vines to swing ( i would've felt like a creature of the wild) otherwise, great game! (I felt like a monkey)

Developer

Personally I found it funny that the main character gets lost in the crowd sometimes.
I wanted to give the monkey friends random different colors, which would make them discernible, but changing the tint procedurally did not look well.
Now thinking about it, there possibly could have been a way I could have implemented that, but that remains for a project for the future now! ;) (I will definitely make the monkey crowd very colorful)

I   had plenty  of ideas for more features I would like to implement, but did not have the time.
I love how you say: "I would have felt like a creature of the wild!"
That really makes me want to add vines to the game now! Which can be tricky, but now you made me wanna do it! :)

Submitted(+1)

Awesome! cute and works within concept really well. Messed up a couple times and couldn't go backwards to jump back on the platforms unfortunately :(

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Hey, thanks for playing the game!

Yes, that is an intentional part of the game strat, that you cannot go back.
Since you are running against a timer, I want to motivate the player to always keep running on and pay attention to the next platforms!
But I understand that in the beginning it can be frustrating to not be able to go back.

“Kinky Dong!” was so funny! I enjoyed this little game.

Developer

Haha, glad you got the joke!

Submitted

the boss encounters could've been reworked somewhat. also, it gets repetitive after a while

Developer

Thank you for playing

Submitted(+1)

Really cool to see the monkeys pile up. Btw are the level procedural?

Developer

Hey glad you like the monkey crowd visuals!
The levels are procedural yes, they are different every time you play.
I fed the game specific platform patterns to choose from and combine in a way    so that it always  remains jumpable.

Submitted(+1)

Nice work!

Developer

Thank you!
I appreciate you taking the time to play the game!

Submitted(+1)

Nice work, I enjoyed watching the monkey crowd while playing !

I wasn't sure what to do/what was happening during the boss encounters : if you're in the upper platform you're safe and nothing happens ? he doesn't make you lose monkeys ?

In my run the boss escaped right before the end, I'm sad I couldn't see the ending.

Developer(+1)

Glad you enjoyed the monkey crowd!
If you're  lucky enough to be    in the upper platforms, then yes, you're safe! ;)
In most encounters that will not be the case though.
If the boss escaped before the run, it means you did not win. You need at least 50 monkey friends to win. Then you can see the ending! ;)

No, you do not loose monkeys. I thought about making Kinky Dong hit monkey friends, but  that would add too many complexities for now:
I would need to create more levels with more monkeys, so that you can  regain the lost monkeys, and probably add even more game mechanisc. So that is not be a priority for now.
What I might do though is to make the boss aim more towards the direction of the player, even if you're on the upper platform.
But this will also take a lot of time to make it playable and not too hard, so not something I was able to do for this jam.

Submitted(+1)

Nice platforming, I feel like having more apes doesn't do a lot except being a requirement. The sound is nice

Developer(+1)

Hi.
There will be a score system with leader board in the future, where more than 50 monkeys will matter.
Thank you for playing!
